is there a way to make excel highlight a series of data in a row, based on criteria in a column. for example, i have 20 rows of data going from column A to F and i want to highlight the info in those rows, based on a number in the last column (ie. all rows containing the number 4 are going to be highlighted yellow). thanks in advance.
One question I have been struggling with - can Excel go backwards and look at cells and manipulate them based on the formatting? For example, if I manually go in and highlight cells with a yellow background, can I then sum the yellow background cells together?
I've watched about a third of the video... sorry if I missed it.
Summing by color can be done with the table feature and filter or with Custom VBA code. If you search Google there is tones of free code for summing by color. For the filter method, see this video:
Excel Magic Trick 770: Count Cells With Color Using Filter Feature or SUBTOTAL function
@ExcelIsFun sorry for the delayed response, but I found a VBA formula that does exactly what I need. now I can say I've programmed VBA for excel! Thanks so much for your help!
Great video! Do you know i there's any way to save the rules that one makes in conditional formatting for later use, so that you don't have to make them over and over again?
@ExcelIsFun -- I am such a novice and new to your work, so you may have already suggested this... so please forgive if I am insulting anyone's intelligence :-/ ....
but maybe save screenshot of formula? or type it into Notepad?
this really epic video, instead of watching the conditional formatting play list if you watch this i can guarantee you, You will be expert on conditional formatting

@ssh08trdr , sure, you can use defined names in conditional formatting formulas.
