The genesis version was waaaaaaaay better than the SNES and the music sounded waaaayyy better it's funny how long it took to beat the game back then now it's like Meh w/e lol thanks for the memories
Definitely one of the best conversions if you're talking about accuracy to the arcade version. Especially given the different hardware of the Genesis than the arcade pcb. That being said, it still doesn't hold a candle to the arcade version. And I don't mean emulated through MAME, either. You have to play the actual game, standing up, with the CRT right in front of you. And while you're at it, grab a slice of pizza.
I love this home version of Double Dragon, especially compared to the NES version which isn't as good. I just played this one twice in the past few days and may have to play it again!! lol Of course I use infinite lives with the Game Genie to make it feel like I have a bunch of quarters while playing lmao I think the Mega Drive version of Double Dragon 2 is a better port than the NES as well!!!
Good video. When I made mine, I had to hold back and NOT exploit the bugs. but if you do use them, you can go through the game VERY quickly, even in solo mode.
It certainly does have a more liquid like animation happening.. I think it might be a bit better, except for the sound, the arcade sound and music was so good
You know what's pathetic, the Megadrive / Genesis is a 16-Bit console, right? The ARCADE hardware that ran Double Dragon (and DDII) was 8-Bit, yet the 16-Bit Genesis cannot do an exact port, it's downgraded in color and lost some detail.
Was it 8 bit? The arcade could display more colors than the Genesis. I agree that if they'd used a larger cart size (which ballistic probably couldn't afford) they could have better captured the arcade version. Just think, if it had been a 32x cart, it could have been 1:1 arcade perfect. oh well
I remember when I got this game as a kid....ot was amazing, a nice hardcore beat-em-up. It wasn't too hard but not too easy either, really well put together. I may buy it soon for the Genesis I recently purchased. It's a magical feeling when you play a good game you used to love as a kid...
A question... what video/sound settings and program did you use to record this? I am having a problem compressing the rest of my DD videos (which is why I haven't posted them) properly...
Hrm, your other comment disappeared -- maybe I clicked Remove instead of Reply. Sorry!
Yes, I did re-compress the video afterwards (can't remember which version of Gens). I used a program called 'mencoder' on Mac OS X, which may also be available for Windows (part of MPlayer). The command was like this:
Yeah, in my videos I consciously avoided using glitches (like the door kill) to win more quickly. Like the arcade you can cheat a LOT if you want to. Thanks for posting this!
You made it look easy man, nice exploits, pwnage!

i always thought the genesis double dragon's controls felt ackward.

This version played a lot smoother than the arcade. But felt like it was overclocked. But what gives with some of the characters vanishing ?

@wingnut4427 : bugs. Many bugs in this conversion!

It's better in some ways, worse in others.
If you don't exploit the bugs and don't give yourself (basically unlimited) lives/health, it can be quite challenging, even moreso than the arcade.

Is that it? This Sega Genesis version of Double Dragon was super short!
Alymero 2 years ago 2
It's no shorter than the arcade, except that you can insta-kill a lot more enemies in this version thanks to the door-bug

Man...awful sound effects and music...that was the huge problem with the Genesis...
MoonOvIce 3 years ago
just a bad conversion, not really down to the genesis machine itself (streets of rage has good sound effects)

I recorded it in the Gens emulator, which generates AVIs, but I can't recall the settings I'm afraid...
