Absolutely beautiful playing. I am a huge early music fan. I'd like to hear you cover something like Landini's Ecco la Primavera or the Cantigas de Santa Maria. Please keep playing!
Beautiful playing, Xavier! I just realized that you are the same Xavier that is plucking and strumming on some of my favorite Jordi Savall CDs. :) I love the musicians that work with Savall. I hope to someday see you play live together and try all of those wonderful stringed instruments. I play a bit of classical guitar, but I am mainly an electric soloist. I'm so glad that you guys record this ancient music to keep it alive. Gracias/Grácies
@laberintosingeniosos Thanks for the reply and warning. Haha...I already have too many guitars, a mandolin, bass, violin, cümbüs and keyboard. I want to get a basic lute (8 course Renaissance) to start with. I guess it's a good thing that I don't have the money for such instruments because I would become an addict for sure. ;) How difficult is it to tune a lute? That Theorbo has interesting fret spacing.
@MrTHocker hi, about the tunning, it's called meantone, which means that the scale is not spaced equal in 12 but in 17. So a c sharp and a d flat is not the same. The first is lower than the second. Therefore we need a special spacing of the frets for each key. My typ, if you buy an instrument, is that you should buy a good one! Since you are musician, you wouldn't stand a regular one. About the amount of instruments, you don't want to see my wardrobe....regards
@whisperingdeath308 Comparing EK's playing to this performance is like comparing Ke$ha's singing to Andreas Scholl's. Superficial artifice compared to real technique and interpretation.
@lutefan There was no comparison made simply an appreciation of another musician other than EK that can play an 11th or 12th century instrument. I have EK and stings cd and dvd that shows EK's amazing skill and i can appreciate both without scrutiny. If you play this instrument and have a video would like to see it!!!
@laberintosingeniosos I started to make an appreciative compliment and somehow it became misconstrued as a comparison, can anyone else see it was merely a compliment or am the only who can appreciate a lutinist for what they are. In that case Edin karamazov is far better and more highly skilled does that help. This guy is ok!
@whisperingdeath308 dont be bitter. to say someone is as good as someone else, is a comparison. but EK and Maestro are like chalk and cheese. while were on the subject EK's toccata and fugue is amazing.
I love this piece, It is magical in your interpretation, and your theorbo has a sound out of the world. Do you know if there is a guitar arrangement for this or do you think it would lost its charm played on the guitar? I can't have a theorbo yet...
@gembela07062001 Dear Gembela, you can wait a little bit to have a theorbo because is very big. There is not a version for guitar. If I have time in a couple of weeks I can make a version specially for you. Best regards for you and your parents.
@laberintosingeniosos Dear Xavier, I would be greatly honoured by this special version and I'm sure other guitarists would also be happy to play it. Please don't spare your wonderfully delicate embellishments from the arrangement, don't make it easy for me, they are the best part of the fun :)))
I listen to this a few times each day. I am currently trying to arrange it for archlute and this recording is my guide. It's very inspirational Mr. Diaz ! Could I ask how you achieve such a good CD-like sound ? Is it a special camera or a microphone that you are using or is it just editing afterwards that makes it sound so good ? Kind regards from Canada !
You're one of the cleanest, most articulate players of early plucked string instruments I've heard. Everything you record is phenomenal. I'm a big fan of your work with Hesperion XXI!
I had a chance to see Mr. Diaz-Latorre perform on vihuela at the Cervantes Institute in Manhattan some years ago and I passed on it. My loss....regreting it now.
Relistening to this video has convinced me to go ahead and finally buy a theorbo. This is just a perfect combination of fidelity to the dance rhythm combined with free improvisation and a masterclass in French Baroque right hand technique
@laberintosingeniosos Actually, I just realized that you have played the theorbo I'm buying. It's the 82 cm Hassenfuss that Pat O'Brien lent you to play continuo when you were in New York.
Mr. Diaz-Latorre, would you please consider making some of your music available as downloads or re-releasing CDs? Your work is so nice and so well done! I'd love to carry it around with me!
@xvirgomoonx Thank you for your words. Actually I'm busy recording other composers right now like Francisco Guerau. During 2012 4 new records are coming and later I'll intend to do the de Visée. Best regards
I have been working on this piece for the last year and I have to say that this is an incredible performance. It is so good that I find it almost discouraging!

I have played the Poema Harmonico, and have always been captivated by this wonderful work. I look forward to hearing your performances of any of his compositions.
I've heard quite a large number of lutenists and classical guitarists since I began playing in 1964, and somehow I have only now stumbled upon Diaz-Latorre. He is absolutely wonderful, and master of not only that instrument but also the music. Finding both is extraordinarily rare, and I am really overwhelmed by his playing.
I blame this video for inspiring me to build my own version of a modern day Lute. Now if I can only get Don Xavier to play it with as much passion as he does this piece.
ok im confused! this sounds wonderful! but would this be the same timing and method that de Visee would play. so if you were to play this to someone of that time, would they understand it or would they be shocked?!

@laberintosingeniosos i agree with you, but if we compare your version with another one, there are differences like the intro and the strumming bits through-out. that Intro was amazing by the way. i suppose that is where the 'feeling' bit comes in, and i can say for definite that yours has a lot more feeling than other versions. which is why ive put your version in my favourites and listen to it 100 times a day :)

I can't get over the wonderful, dancing, MOVEMENT of this interpretation - it's both exciting and elegant! I want more de Visee, please - on theorbo and guitar. Thank you, Xavier! Always a fan, JvL
This is such a departure from the recording by Berghan...is it a variation or other interp. Very interesting timing. What is the key and where can I locate a copy of the
notation?If you can.. send me a copy to T. Mace,4804 Doris Ave.,Charlotte,NC 28205
@flatw00d1 Hi, I'm sorry I cannot send you a copy but you can find a copy on the manuscrit de Saizenay. You can find a PDF copy of this manuscrit in my public folder public.me. com/xavierdiazlatorre together with the mp3 file of the video.
Nâo faço concessões a moda o tics. E intento ser honesto. E tudo.

I can't get over the wonderful, dancing, MOVEMENT of this interpretation - it's both exciting and elegant! I want more de Visee, please - on theorbo and guitar. Thank you, Xavier! Always a fan, JvL

E tudo.
Eu fico contente que vocé goste do video. Abraço

When played, a theorbo creates a very magical atmosphere that I never listened on a guitar.

@poveron7 Thank you poveron. I think so too. Although I think that guitar is magic as well :)
