I'm trying to learn how to spin, and this is by far the most helpful basic video I've found. After watching you, I picked up the staff and was able to spin, but I noticed after I had the staff going for a while that I didn't have the thumb spin part in there, I just rolled it over till I had to catch it with my other hand and rotated my wrist to keep it going.... Is this bad or do I need to learn the thumb spin part?
so ive been staff spinning for awhile now, and have been teaching myself. the main thing i noticed is i developed a different version of the basic staff spin does not include the the first part of yours (the roll over arm and catch). Its more of a continues version of the thumb spin that distributes even halves of the spin to each hand.
Well I don't know how you perform it, but I noticed how you could go faster with the wrist roll added than you could with just the thumb spin. If you'd do only the thumbspin, your hand has to go faster and faster as you spin faster. With the wrist roll added, you have a bit more time before you have to catch it again because it's making more turns around one hand.
Therefore how fast you can spin isn't limited to how fast your hands move. There's more to it than that though.
You can practice it as long or as many times as you want! This system is not easier or harder than any of the other ways to spin a staff. If you think it looks cool, just try it out!
If you want to learn it quickly, just practice at least 3 times a week for at least half an hour each time. But it depends on how quickly you can learn!
I have been learining the basic spin but I am confised with the thumb spin part of it. Do I spin the staff around my hand and catch and THEN do the thumb spin or do I do it staight after?
Also what is actually happening in thee thumb spin you did not explain it enough for me?
ive been doin this shit since i was six no joke thats what happens when ur parents are hippies im 14 now and im pro!!! if u want to see some sick shit when u spin get a clear pbc tube and put two glowsticks at the ends its great for raves but b4 u put the sticks in drill a hole through the ends and fasten the glow sticks with paper clips throgh the holes u drilled.
If you start spinning larger or heavier staffs, using the fingers becomes impossible or even dangerous. But generally you should stick with what you're most comfortable with :)
Hey, listen man.. I'm not trying to shoot down what you're doing or anything, but you need to take a better look at your work.... When doing the Rotor (or basic spin as you call it) make sure your thumbs practically touch when you pass it between hands.. Otherwise, as you're doing, the circle made gets very sloppy, and if you zoomed out, you would see that.. Also, most people like seeing it fast, but the best way to do that is not to rush yourself... (Continued...)
@Jayboy720 It's to learn how to maximize beats when passing between hands... Your behind the back trick there can be so much faster and so much easier if you let it spin as much as it can before passing... You're doing more work, and getting less out of it... It doesn't work... Also, watch your plains... You cannot instantly and comfortably change from a vertical to a horizontal plain (as you do in the end) ... If youre going to spin it vertically ... (Continued...)
very nice :) my mum showed me staff spinning as new hobby when i was 11 years old.. but i gave up looking for tutorials.. but this one really helps :D
sometimes on birthdays or anniversaries we do something like a show with fire :)
its very fun but i dont advise to do it with fire befor you handle it safety :D (hope i can say that thisway .. im german and my english is very bad .. sometimes :D)
Great tutorial, i just can't seem to get the primary back spin yet. Although i always love hows it looks like the staff spins by itself and your just handing it off, hopefully i'll get it sometime.
Hey Lord Tains, love your staff work. I am self taught using your videos, getting better but been a bit slack lately practice wise...Anyways I went camping and showed a bunch of kids the basics about four of them loved it and I am wondering if you mind me linking your videos to a community forum so the kids can learn some more...
I love watching you do staff, you have taught me many tricks they are great learning videos...thanks heaps.
the practise staff i use is a 6ft 1inch diamiter peice of pvc pipe i got from lowes!:)its flimsey but its l;ight and helps you get use to the feeling..hope it helps..it was 93sence!:)
Thanks for the vid! How do you keep your grip from 'creeping' down the staff as you do the basic spin? Every time I catch mine it seems to be further down until I eventually drop it. =O
The thumbspin is created to keep the staff from "creeping down". If its still creeping down, you're not catching the staff at the right place after the thumbspin. Try to catch it more to the left/right and see what helps.
That's the reason I wrote down you should let it fall. Some staff spins are based on the concept of falling, and letting your reflexes do the rest.
If it falls what will happen? The floor will not break and (hopefully) neither will your staff. If you want to lose the fear, just let it fall on the floor a few times. Get used to the fact that it does'nt matter if it does. good luck!
hey Tains, I got your message a while back, but I've been really busy with work and such... found a break last week to make a video, just posted it as a response. Hope you enjoy - RADRaze2KX
Hey Tains, first nice vid, it helped me a lot. Now i have a question, i'm going to buy a new bo staff and i wanted to know if there is any difference if u spin with a normal staff or with a tapered one. Thx in advance ;)
Finally starting to nail the first 2, pretty easy now. But the primary backspin is more difficult. I'm not sure exactly how to give/receive the staff between my hands. Plus I dunno where to spin. When you start spinning it fast, I lose it.
Weird... I already figured out those moves when I was a kid just from just watching Chinese shows and stuff... I just can't do them as fast as he's doing in the video.
just wondering but with the double handed figure eight i was wondering how your hands do that as my stick just hits me when i try to do the same as the one handed spin 2 handed
Try to start more slowly. If you hit yourself that means the staff is not spinning vertically enough. The reason for that could be that you need to loosen your wrists and hands up.
do you use the thumb spin technique that i saw in another video? might have been yours, its just realy annoying but im not hitting myself hard, just hard enough to reasise im doing something wrong
I use a 135cm thin metal rod, works great. But I plan to get a fire staff and just practice with that because I don't know where else to buy an actual bow staff in Australia.
awsum video man, its helped me alot. just one question tho. what would kind of staff would u recomend for beginners? im using a wooden pole from a rake thats pretty heavy and im having trouble doin the figure 8. thx again for the video, its exactly what i was lookin for
Thanks I really appreciate the good comments from everyone, really motivates me to keep going.
I recommend a broom stick made of aluminum, because they dont break immediately, but are very light. often they are also collapsable. Dont forget it has to come up to your shoulder for a good length BO.
You are an excellent instructor! The Slow Motion shots are a great help. Have you ever thought of making an instructional DVD and selling it? If you ever do, I'm ready to send my dollars to you!
The basics, the basics. I can do everything just fine, and even the other ones you showed in your video except for ONE thing. That is the basic spin. I can do it, just not rapid. It is very slow when i do it. I find the butterfly or through the fingers easier, but it doesn't build as much momentum as the basic wrist spin it seems. Anyways, my only tip that has worked is to use your thumb to control it as far back as you can before you catch it, that is all. Thanks!
I'd recommend finding a light staff since I've hit myself numerous times with the bo, yet they were all minor except for one which left a bump on my forehead. The lighter ones generally spin better too. Also try to avoid very thick staffs which are hard to maneuver.
The staff in this video is perfect for beginning. After a while -when you get the feeling- you can start using wood(or iron), start using longer staffs and thicker staffs.
my staff in tutorial 3,4,5 is a very thick, heavy and long staff(but now I'll never want anything else).
Well, I explain the entire spin on this tutorial and you should be able to get it right. What kind of problem do you have with it?
Well, @SneakyUltimater: I created my own version of the backspin as well, where I add a extra spin to the back as well. I even do that version in Staff spinning+names REDO.
Ya. I used to use a stick I found around the house and couldn't do the figure 8 on it. Once I upgraded to a longer staff it came easily. Still can't manage to do the figure 8 on the first stick..
I enjoyed this video much yes. I just like spinning the random sticks I find on the beach/in the woods (after pruning and rubbing off all the bark I can) makes the basic spin rather hard.
Oh and I feel i should know the name of the music here because it is everywhere, can anyone help me with that?
I have a question about the back spin. When you do it slowly it looks like the left hand is only passing the staff to the right hand, and only the right hand is maiking a half spin...
But when you do it fast it looks like you make a half spin with your left hand before passing it to the right hand in front...
Perhaps its just an illusion, im not sure...
But i just cant make it look right when passing from left hand to the right... any advice?
Hey, just started watching your bo staff spining tutorial. Im still a noob at it so... yah i kinda suck at it atm. Im still practicing though. What kinda "long item" do u use to spin ur bo staff? a regular bo staff? or a lightweight broom stick? or maybe one of them aluminum mopping staffs
Ahh, how long and how much does ur bo staff weigh? cause im thinking of buying one but im not really sure where to get one. My mind is set on Ebay, but i know some of those bo staffs are bad quality
THIS is THE way to teach the technique. Kudos my friend, excellent job. I will look for the rest of your videos over the next week. Do you have more teaching vids like this? Where does one get a collapsible staff like that?
catching the bar..? what did you do..throw it? you should not throw it untill you've learnt at least the basic spin. and no, staff spinning is pretty difficult.
When fully mastered, I dont ever think hile spinning not even when making combo's. you just follow the staffs movements. its a instrument, not a sport; you can play it.
Finally found someone who wants to help others instead of showing off! I have to exercise with a weights bar everyday to cure my tennis elbow (boring) but now I can learn something too. Hurts when I drop it on my toe though!
ummm, i dono really if this will be practical in fighting, wushu staff styles don't go into such fancy stuff cause its majorly based on land the hit and continue that combo. Expecially with the over the hand thing, you will really have to practice heaps to catch the staff, if it ends up hitting something in mid spin
My staff spinning is not for striking, and mostly wushu is not for striking either. My staff spinning concentrates more on fire staff spinning than on martial arts, but neverthe less I can fight with it.
To be able to spin, requires ultimate controll of the staff, and I may not have mastered martial arts, nor staff spinning, I have certainly mastered how to control a staff.
So yes, I can fight and no, you're correct, this is not martial arts.
Sweet been looking for more of these kinda tutorials, never used ranged weapons in my martial arts and been wanting to learn staff in particular, this will help!

1 more thing i've been workin on the back spin but i cant seem to get it
filipinoguy101 3 years ago
"back spin" is misleading. There is no spin at all behind the back - it is merely a hand off when the bo is parallel to the ground.
I've seen a variation of it on youtube:
Which DOES get a spin behind the back. The hand off is done when the bo is perpendicular to the ground and each hand contributes a 180 degree turn.
SneakyUltimater 3 years ago
Well, I explain the entire spin on this tutorial and you should be able to get it right. What kind of problem do you have with it?
Well, @SneakyUltimater: I created my own version of the backspin as well, where I add a extra spin to the back as well. I even do that version in Staff spinning+names REDO.

Soopey2002 3 years ago
I started off with a aluminium mopping staff, but now im spinning a real Bo. in this vid I use a mopping staff as well for instructional use
lordtains 3 years ago
Ahh, how long and how much does ur bo staff weigh? cause im thinking of buying one but im not really sure where to get one. My mind is set on Ebay, but i know some of those bo staffs are bad quality

That's amazingly helpful. :]
When I started, I managed to hit myself in the head a few times.
It's helpful if you have to protect yourself too. Ever have a crazed raver run for you? Owies.

THIS is THE way to teach the technique. Kudos my friend, excellent job. I will look for the rest of your videos over the next week. Do you have more teaching vids like this? Where does one get a collapsible staff like that?

is spinning supposed to be easy because ive tried for an hour and end up having very hurt hands from catching the bar.
bezerka 4 years ago
catching the bar..? what did you do..throw it? you should not throw it untill you've learnt at least the basic spin. and no, staff spinning is pretty difficult.
lordtains 4 years ago
I've been in the arts for a while, but I'm new to the staff. Great vid.
nspectorx 4 years ago
This a thing you will not have to focus hard about once u've got it down?
Delta97420 4 years ago
When fully mastered, I dont ever think hile spinning not even when making combo's. you just follow the staffs movements. its a instrument, not a sport; you can play it.
lordtains 4 years ago
ya the back spin is pretty simple took me 5-10 mins tops to learn i just decided to try it one day and i look at this vid!

Finally found someone who wants to help others instead of showing off! I have to exercise with a weights bar everyday to cure my tennis elbow (boring) but now I can learn something too. Hurts when I drop it on my toe though!
pmcardell 4 years ago
haha, I use a hard metal staff sometimes too, just dont use throws LOL!
I hope your tennis elbow gets better...

and i really hurt my ankle once
lordtains 4 years ago
ummm, i dono really if this will be practical in fighting, wushu staff styles don't go into such fancy stuff cause its majorly based on land the hit and continue that combo. Expecially with the over the hand thing, you will really have to practice heaps to catch the staff, if it ends up hitting something in mid spin
zzchanli 4 years ago
My staff spinning is not for striking, and mostly wushu is not for striking either. My staff spinning concentrates more on fire staff spinning than on martial arts, but neverthe less I can fight with it.
To be able to spin, requires ultimate controll of the staff, and I may not have mastered martial arts, nor staff spinning, I have certainly mastered how to control a staff.
So yes, I can fight and no, you're correct, this is not martial arts.
lordtains 4 years ago
Sweet been looking for more of these kinda tutorials, never used ranged weapons in my martial arts and been wanting to learn staff in particular, this will help!
Dynus87 4 years ago
i kan fight with it too, but this is just for show. only the figure eight might be used in fighting(to keep te oponent away).
lordtains 4 years ago
Great job!. If i tried this tho id break every window in my house! Good instructions and good video showing the moves.

wow you are realy good at explaining stuff to, 5/5
galwazie 4 years ago
Echt heel goed!
renegade1s 4 years ago
lordtains 4 years ago
damn you, the last part's difficult >:(
