hey, i want to learn mandolin, what do you think would be good to buy for a beginner? I already play guitar so im hoping that some of the skills will transfer to mandolin
wow. I've had a mandolin for a couple years that I got from my grandfather. I never knew it had potential to make sound like that. I always just thought it was a slow paced strumming instrument.

thanks. this is helpful. i approach improv in a predominantly single-note melodic approach, so this is a good piece of advice.

That looks about right. I usually only play two strings during the starters. Some players will play all four, if possible.

I think it's the same as guitar. Say, you have a one of those slides it would look like this

etc. I've only played a mandolin once, yesterday actually, And It's way different than violin, or guitar xD
