If the police stop you and they want to know who you are, how can you prove it without an identity card? The government doesn't actually collect any information about you, the ID card only shows name,surname, height and address.
As a foreign national I still have to have an ID card and it won't be scraped ever. I had to return it twice already as they issued it with spelling mistakes each time... so I am waiting for the 3rd one now! They even have a special line to deal with misspellings. They just can't read the application properly where every letter of a word is a capital one in a separate box for cow's sake! And I had to wait for like 3 months! But you can have in within 24 hours if you pay £15000...

The ID cards scheme will require us all to report to the police and give all our details, or, as Jacki Smith said, "you'll be able to get your finger prints taken and face scanned while you're popping out shopping". It will require us all to show them on demand.

Im thinking about getting a new passport before they bring in the biometric interviews. My current one expires in 2012. I know they have those chips on the new passports, what are these chips for exactly and would I have to submit any more information. I dont want to break my No2ID pledge.
RFID chips, they basically transmit data on the card (pretty much what is on your passport at the moment) to a reader, so it logs your movement in and out of the country. It doesn't hold Biometric data, or anything of that nature. its really just to speed up border checks, I'm on the pledge too, and have one.

I think the philosophy behind the ID Cards is most note-worthy. If we're all good boys and girls, if we have nothing to hide, and are truly innocent, then we do not need to worry. Here in the US most stores require a "savings card" or a "members card" in order to get the lower price. This is simmular to a compulsory Identity system. But some people only see the discount aspect and nothing more. It's really sad.

I don't really see a problem with ID cards. They contain no personal personal information on them and help to fight identity fraud and crime by containing everyones fingerprints on a database. To be honest, in todays society I would rather be safe and put that tiny bit of extra trust with the government at no cost.

Then I was told to send it to Bristol an address they gave me. It was a call from unknown number. I send my ID card with passport to them but more than a week still i don't know what is going on with my case and my detaikls are in whoes hands??????

I suppose if you are a career criminal, paedophile, illegal immigrant or someone who wishes to be anonymous then you'd have a reason not to want one. In Spain everyone has to carry one. Not a problem here, in fact it's very convenient, especially when you pay with you debit or credit card. Here in Spain if you don't have one, you must carry your passport with you everywhere. So, yes please, I would like an ID card!

Well it is democratic, we elect the MEP's which vote on the laws, the whole 75% of our laws thing is deceptive, the laws they make revolve around trade and standards in order to streamline free-trade, when it comes to dealing with crime each member makes its own laws.
P.S. UKIP live in a fantasy world, if they think we can leave the EU and STILL have the same level of trade with them their thinking is screwed.

The ID cards scheme will require us all to report to the police and give all our details, or, as Jacki Smith said, "you'll be able to get your finger prints taken and face scanned while you're popping out shopping". It will require us all to show them on demand.
In other words, ID cards will mean that we're all on probation; we are all suspects. Can anybody remember what 20th Century regimes required everybody to turn up to submit their details, so that they knew where they were?

The only problem is the amount of money Labour will have wasted on this before they get kicked out. As others have said an ID Card WILL NOT save a single person from a terrorist act, Police and Secret Service investigation will. See the News this week for the evidence. Im thinking about getting a new passport before they bring in the biometric interviews. My current one expires in 2012. I know they have those chips on the new passports, what are these chips for exactly and would I have to submit any more information. I dont want to break my No2ID pledge.

RFID chips, they basically transmit data on the card (pretty much what is on your passport at the moment) to a reader, so it logs your movement in and out of the country. It doesn't hold Biometric data, or anything of that nature. its really just to speed up border checks, I'm on the pledge too, and have one.

I think the philosophy behind the ID Cards is most note-worthy. If we're all good boys and girls, if we have nothing to hide, and are truly innocent, then we do not need to worry. We could even benefit from those who are less innocent being caught more easily. HOWEVER, Nick's argument above, regarding the 911 bombers etc, CANNOT be overlooked. Many of these kind of laws only effect law-abiding people, and what is the point of that? You, me, and our pal Nick, will be paying £7B for NOTHING!!!

Here in the US most stores require a "savings card" or a "members card" in order to get the lower price. This is simmular to a compulsory Identity system. But some people only see the discount aspect and nothing more. It's really sad.

Nick Clegg is just the same. All that he has said about ID cards is now meaningless, seeing as he broke his promise on having a referendum on the EU treaty. A euorpe wide ID card is being planned and we wont be able to stop it. That is Nick Clegg and the LidDems fault as much as anyone elses

hmff i'm a lib dem supporter. But ID cards to me are an incredible idea. it does seriously need to be changed and rethought but the base concept, would solve many many problems especially with youths buying things they shouldn't. something i'm familiar with as i work in an off license. i admit labours version of the proposed sceme won't work.

If only it weren't for the Lib Dem's policies on EVERY OTHER ISSUE, I would vote for them. They seem to be the only party that's even half-serious about civil liberties issues. I just can't stand them otherwise.

I come from a country where ID's are used. The British people should fight like rabid dogs against them!! They will not bring any safety, and they will give authority to any government affiliate (such as the police) to stop you anytime they feel like to check your ID. They might even take you to the police station in case you have forgotten it, just because they dont like your face. Trust me, you will lose a big part of your freedom.

They can send me to jail, pin me down and cause GBH if needed in order to get my DNA or details cos I will not submit.

SAFE SOLUTION TO PROBLEMS? What problems? How does ID cards solve these problems (not that they are any problems). Whatever you can muster there is a counter argument that beats the futile argument for ID cards. These ID create problems not solve them. Spend the money on tackling the real issues. Oh yes the money - I do not believe even the most liberal of gov estimates for the cost of this stupid scheme will be close to the final total cost. FIGHT IRRATIONAL (SPY) ID CARDS AT ALL COSTS.

I don't really see a problem with ID cards. They contain no personal personal information on them and help to fight identity fraud and crime by containing everyones fingerprints on a database. To be honest, in todays society I would rather be safe and put that tiny bit of extra trust with the government at no cost.
WE NEED TO LOOK TO THE FUTURE, AND ID CARDS ARE SAFE SOLUTIONS TO MANY PROBLEMS!

Get real mate, no personal information - if these get through it is a matter of time untill you will have to carry it everywhere with you becuase it will be all your bank and credit cards in one. Research RFID chips and WAKE THE F*** UP. If you were a real mod you should be fighting facism not signing up to it. When your paying for your groceries and getting books from libary with your thumbprint it might dawn on. RESEARCH RFID chips.

a) I am supporting Socialism, not fascism.
b) Why not pay for goods with your thumbprint? That way, no one will be able to steal your identity, and pay for THEIR goods with your money.
c) I would love to be able to carry my drivers licence, debit card, etc in one. It would make life a lot simpler and easier.

If you have paid attention to the news recently, you might have noticed that there's been quite a lot of information lost by the government. is that a good sign to keep centralising information? is it really worth it just so you can carry a slightly smaller wallet?

I don't see the need for ID cards at all. I think it will be just another massive piece of beurocracy that will drain more public funds and add to the culture of legislating to solve problems.

H'mm. I'm already aware that emails and mobile phones are monitored for 'key' words. I don't object as I am not a terrorist. I do object to any other personal information being tagged, just because they can. Britain has become the most monitored state with the least proved record. So, is it really necessary. Yes and No. Yes, if it works, but No, if it doesn't. So far, it does not seem to work. The police are disinterested in crimes that have been reported - I was a victim. They ignored me.

Although I can't wait to get rid of these war criminals, the tories will be just as bad. Let's just hope there is a hung parliament, then we can set a condition of our partnership in a coalition as the introduction of proportional representation. With our votes at the last election, we should have 143 seats and labour should have just 228. Shame on them for stealing our votes!

Nothing we didn't already know about the ID card scam. It's nothing more than an excuse to keep a heap more public paracites in the job with a fancy pension and cost us all a packet. ID cards will not stop crime or terrorism, they will help criminals since the government seem intent on flogging our data to the highest criminal bidders, I don't believe that they are realy so incompetent as to just loose it! Sorry I forgot that Ruth Kelly was still in the cabinet, so any foul up is possible!

Seems the government wants to know my mobile phone numbers and credit card numbers before I get on a train or a boat. We already have passport checks for domestic flights and ferries (under the Terrorism Act). We have more surveillance than East Germany...

We need to make ID cards this government's 'Poll Tax' downfall. I refused to pay the poll tax until they forced me, and I will do the same with ID cards. However, I am in favour of the right sort of local taxation and also the right sort of ID card - one that I control and is for MY benefit, but not if every uniform and their dog can stop me and ask to see it.

ID cards are one of the most dangerous and insidious ideas of this government, which I used to support! Have they not read anything? 1984 for instance? Have they not thought of the wider implications - even if they could keep the material safe, which they can't and will never be able to do - this is a draconian invasion into peoples' lives and privacy. It will not stop terrorism. It will not stop theft and crime. All it will do is further damage our democracy and freedoms.

The goverment are using ID cards as way of trying 2 look as if thier being tough on terrorism; when infact the whole idea is ill thought out because: it will have no effect on preventing terrorism, will make identity theft easier, and makes huge infringments into our privicy.

Calamity Clegg wants closer integration with the EUSSR, he's happy to accept majority voting and the giving up of our vetoes. In other words the handing over of even more of our sovereign rights without our consent.
His anti ID card campaign is a vote buying scam, Biometric ID cards is a EUSSR initiative he knows that the rest of the EU will vote for them. He's just another anti English British con man and traitor.

Note that the reasons for the introduction of ID cards has changed several times (terrorism, immigration, benefit fraud etc.), as if the govt is simply looking for an excuse to implement them. Why? Either there are profits to be made by industry friends of certain politicians or Labour have become so arrogant and detatched from the real world that they want to push through cards on an ideological basis regardless of the fact they can *never* work as proposed.
