Duran got crushed. Duran looked most menacing in this fight with the full beard andin shape...at least visually. However at the stare down he looked uncertain or worried. Hearns looked like he wanted to kill Duran. Duran I think was intimidated by Hearns size. I hated Hearns for this fight , because I wished he would have rather did this to Leonard. This didn't work against Hagler though. Glass jaw Tommy.
I agree it was a match like Foreman versus Frazier. Duran was Frazier. Hearns was Foreman. Leonard was like Ali against both. Duran handled Leonard in 1st fight like Frazier did against Ali only to lose next two fights against Leonrad. Hearns said he wanted to get back to being the hitman...and said he'd start off with Duran. This was after his broken pinky thing that Hagler always teased Hearns about.. Duran's probably my all time favorite fighter....however I had a bad feeling about this one.
grasias a dios que nos dio a duran uno de los mejores boxeadores del mundo y claro de panama o panameño y me siento orgulloso y para aclarar duran no a quedado en el olvidoaun eta aqui y yo lo se
@ALLFIELDS123 you can't be serious. if your making the reference of mosley being hearns, which i pressume you are, he isn't 6' 2." not to mention pac is a whole hell of alot faster than duran. duran at 5' 7" was a mismatch against hearns at 6' 2." pacquiao at 5' 6" and lightning speed is not a mismatch with mosley at 5' 9."
this has to be the best k.o ever it looks sweet how he hits him and then backs away and watches him fall infront of him like he is bowing to his feet any1 intrested in these fights leonard-hearns-halger-duran then read 4 kings
not that it would've changed the outcome, but with such drastic differences in reach and height, if Duran's trainers were worth a damn they would've told the poor guy to get low instead of standing straight up with a bullseye on his chin. Kinda like Frazier did Ali to compensate for his shorter height and reach. He stayed low so he could come up over Ali's punches...and it worked. Well....at least the first fight it did. Ali destroyed him in Manila.
UMMM.he had fredddie brown and ray arcel for a corner two of the best ever, duran was a an infighter, plus he had just fought hagler to a 15 round decision at 160 why wouldnt he think he could fight his fight at 154 and win
At welterweight Duran would've beaten Hearns, no question. And Duran would've had a chance here if he hadn't ballooned up in weight and then dropped 60 lbs. just prior to the fight.
You're entitled to your opinion mate, and me to mine. They never fought again, so I"m not convinced. Had they fought again ala Foreman-Frazier, I'd say ok, but they didn't so I don't.
I disagree, Duran would of had a chance to beat hearns just not this night lol. Remember Duran whooped Iran Barkley the same Barkley who whooped Hearns twice in his prime. Size didnt matter. It was who landed first. Obviously hearns did.
When I saw this fight I thought Hearns had broken Durans neck. The audio on the origial broadcast was much clearer and you could hear that glove crash against Durans face.
How can someone compare Palomino to a great like Thomas Hearns? Ridiculous. ANd how can you compare the power of Leonard to Hearns? Another comment said, Duran did not see the last right. This fight was not about one right hand. Duran was pummelled from the first round by Hearns speed. I know it is hard to admit a great fighter like Duran was demolished like this, but it is acceptable since it was done by another great fighter Thomas Hearns. And I am not a great Hearns fan. I like Holyfield
Yglide, you are correct. I never even saw Roberto Duran get hurt before Hearns. I did see Esteban DeJesus put him down in the early 70's, but Duran wasn;t hurt. He was caught off balance and immediately got up. In this fight against Hearns, he was hurt bad. He was stopped via TKO by 2 others late in his career, but I don't count those. This fight could have easily been stopped before Duran was knocked out cold. I give Duran credit for getting up.
Hearns was an alltime great. Look at this list of Hall of famers. Pipino Cueves,Sugar Ray Leonard, Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, Iran Barkley, Virgil Hill
I see a pattern in Hearns' fights. He starts aiming for the body with his jab, and as his opponent gets used to it by swaying his body back, Hearns throws a hook at the exposed head to finish him. Although Duran realized this, he had difficulty protecting his head against that hook.
Thanks for posting that knockout, that is my second favorite knockout punch. If you like to hear a monstrous punch, go and type: Holmes vs Shavers 2. You will hear a murderous right hand, I belive in the 2:18 mark. Holmes and Ali said that this guy was the hardest puncher they fought. Holmes made a comeback in the fight. Thanks again for the posting.
Hearns had a great right hand and he was such a fast fighter. Duran did not have a chance. Duran had trouble with fast guys and Tommy was one of the fastest most powerful. If you look at Hearns career, most of the guys Hearns fought did not do well after they fought him? he took the fight out of most guys with that right hand.
Man what a right hand Tommy could a knocked out a horse with that punch I never see Duran hurt before or after in his career, If Hearns would a had a chin he would a been one of the all time greats, he was still a great fighter an def one of me favs :-)

sorry mate but if they fought at welter 1000 times Duran would be lucky to win about 2
A. he was always terrified of Hearns
B. 11 inch reach advantage
C. 6 inch height advantage
D. Hearns can Bang
no way ever could Duran beat Hearns
