  • brilliant! period!

  • Oh My God!!! Who the hell posted on this page!!??? The Slits weren't afraid to do the kind of music they wanted to do. Who the fuck are you to criticize anything original and different??! Pessimistic bored and lonely...you can be pathetic and of a younger generation at the same time WOW!!!!

  • You're all on drugs. This is not good.

  • For some reason they remind me of Big Black, and yes, I like Big Black.

  • @ khultan all the kids will eat it up, if its packeged properly, steal a sound and imitate uniform and equally. not an ode but just the facts where our world is nowadays, an idea is whAt we lack doesnt matter anyways - kurt cobain

  • @sjktlkee8 there's no point in arguing with people with dementia. They're prolly commenting from nursing homes.

  • the gogo's meet hazy fantazy..but this really sounds like suzy sue..this song is pretty cool

  • I like how you old people turned into your parents, seriously. They thought the same about your music that you think about our music now. i think the slits are ok, but i bet the only artists you have heard from the new generation is lady gaga and Bieber.

    Times change, deal with it

  • @sjkitlkee88

well sorry "young" lady... I do not agree, because the fact is:

our parents were not THAT matched/adapted (society, political, fashion victim etc) as YOU are nowadays and thats rrreeeeeaaaallyy sad, specially for an "old" punk like me.

Understand me: I DO NOT LIKE The Slits, but they`re so much more creative and innovative than anythig else I`ve ever heard of your iphone-no-values-generation.

  • @sjkitlkee88

I usually don't comment this way...but fuck you, you little twit.

    : )

  • @sjkitlkee88 That's a lie, times don't change, you try to take from the 'old' people what you and your generation wouldn't ever dream up on your own and try to rearrange it but it ends up bland and poor.

  • @sjkitlkee88 thank-you!! I agree with you so much :D

  • Comment removed

  • @VolXrat Actually, I thought that MTV had always pretty much sucked! And I really dont remember it playing THIS kind of music very often.

  • i wanna be able to dance like her : (

  • when MTV played music videos....of actual music

  • mtv? weird

  • @Duhkka9

not really, in the early days of MTV, the major labels didn't want their acts on MTV cause they saw it as giving away content. This void was filled with punk and new wave bands.

  • @satinstoner I do not remember MTV ever playing much punk. I recall it playing mostly Micheal Jackson, Madona, Huey Lewis, Def Lepard, Kenny Logins and Bon Jovi type music!

  • gotta love the dancing

  • young female "artists" these days wish they could be as creative as this

  • @scorpionlady3000

it's cause they're typical girls....get it? .....he he he

  • @scorpionlady3000 Here here!

  • @scorpionlady3000 you could say the same about males ... i think remarking the fact that they're females is out of order really

  • @scorpionlady3000 young male "artists" too…

    ;)

  • @scorpionlady3000 Florence and the machine, Regina Spector, Fiest, and Jannelle Monae.

Thier there ...its just a little harder to find them.

  • @JonnyRocketfingers7 Zola Jesus, Fever Ray, Cat Power, Amanda Warner and Glasser. There's actually quite alot!

  • @scorpionlady3000 M.I.A. was a creative artist and she was influenced by The Slits.

  • @scorpionlady3000 oi

when girls today say they want womans right they really mean is long as i can sing and make alot of money i will shut up thats all and the thing about coffe thing too haha

    peple are dumb haha

back then they didnt care if they had right long as they can do what girs like this band did they were happy

    the end

    :P

  • Her dancing skills are amazing ha ha

  • bobgure is right. The term punk said less about the music than it did the style and attitude at this time. Don't forget Talking Heads, who were a full-blown pop group by the mid eighties, started out in the New York punk scene. And their first few records were very much apart of that movement even though they didn't snarl or bang out distorted songs about anarchy or alienation. Punk embodies a lot more than most think.

  • True.

It was less a movement than a gestalt.

I suppose an underlying theme would be anti-consumerist, breaking down and reconstructing popular cultural themes. The Situationists come to mind. Musically the influences were all about diversity: From BayCityRollers to Musique Concrete, Pub Rock to Steve Reich, Brit Invsion (remember 'power pop"?) to Soul and Funk and Free Jazz. I suppose the most cohesive element ws the pervasive sense of irony behind everything.

    All about design and branding.

  • why they only had this lame cd

  • Did you give up on your sentence half way becasue you realised how shit it was?

  • no if you watch carefully you will see the sentence finished above the unfinished

  • Um, go back watching your ADD stuff ?

  • One of the seminal LPs of the period.

    Dennis Bovell produced.

    PS - Back in 76-77 'punk' wasn't a style.

The masses hadn't been duped yet into needing marketing labels ie: 'hardcore, grindcore, artrock, deathmetal, numetal

    ,postpunk...etc.

    No facebook androids back then.

No fucking cellphones either or idiot texting.

  • well said ...dis yah tune come from a better time..

  • @bobgure calm down old man... this is great and there is some great stuff now too

  • this is beyond gay lol

  • Wow now i know where Adam and the Ants got the inspiration from

  • OMG, guess what? I don't care for The Slits either, was hoping to find a video of them performing with Budgie drumming, if you don't care for it, don't leave a fucking comment, jackasses!

  • "There are great female artists like rickie lee jones, joni mitchell, wendy james, who stood the test of time, though, but not these here"

Joni Mitchell, ha! Talk about overrated. I'd rather listen to the worst Slits song than one minute of that screeching harpie. I'm sorry for you, poor Starbucks hippie.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAA you are great "poor starbucks hippie" hahahahaa i love you!

  • Right on. These Starbucks clones have no taste or culture at all. They just buy a coffee so they can be seen holding "the trendiest coffee, like ever!" Silly, silly. And just because the Slits aren't appreciated these days, it doesn't mean that they suck. Women artists these days should be creative like the Slits.

  • @iRosemarie starbuck clones? lol. I know the type. They think their so cool and ironic.

  • @iRosemarie *All artists these days should be creative like the Slits.

  • @iRosemarie there's always pockets of really cool stuff going on amidst the majority crap - you can trace it back in every generation. the slits were cool but only liked by a tiny minority of youngsters. working in a record shop at the time a load of young people were buying shit like phil collins, dire straits. black lace. etc

  • A wonderful record. Genius actually.

  • You are right ! I think VERUCA SALT is totally overrated and boring and as to lydia lunch, uah! forget her - nobody will even know her name in 5 years time anymore. All this fashionable female liberation has led to a total mediocrity because too many women think they are Goddesses just because they are women and therefore have forgotten TO PRACTICE AN INSTRUMENT - its not enough to be a woman - you also have to WORK, SUFFER, SWEAT and FEEL if you are a real artist

  • for all you know I could be a boy

  • All the artists you mentioned are great too, but the Slits are a completely different style. They predated Veruca Salt and Garbage. They are excellent. I'm a guy and I love them. You probably don't like Lydia Lunch either, a great female singer. Why are you even commenting on this video? Just to piss people off?

  • stood the test of time?

the slits have been around for over thirty years and are still going - i saw them at offset festival this year and they were absolutely fantastic

    xxxxxxxxxx

  • fuck u buchananstreet they were brilliant u sound like right wing facist

  • Can you form a sentence, maybe? Nope? Alright, no problems. Just back the fuck off.

  • Really, they must be grannies by now. I went to see Subway Sect a couple of years ago and got trapped in the pile of parked zimmer frames. There's a time a band should call it a day, 5 years after they start according to The Clash.

  • The Slits are playing at Offset Festival, London in September! x

  • One of them,i see

  • A daft dick? Quite possibly.

  • daft dicks like you can't hack it more like...

  • So crazy and beautiful. I love it! :D

  • remember all female bands? what the fuck happened?

  • Let me guess-the other videos were taken out because of copyrights?

  • i fucking love the slits

  • bahaha they seem cool ^^

  • love their dancing!! i wish i could dance like that!!

  • I love this song and video, too bad it was cut short. I love the zany dancing they do. :P

  • Her dance moves are zany. So awesome!

  • They actually played this on MTV...a way different time for them, more liberal.

  • awesome band

  • yeh the slits

but werent they really rich middle class english girls pretending to be street wise?

    speakin in bad forced patois?

vsiually good but couldnt play to save their life .

used to screech like crazed crones

    .saw them with prince hammer

  • Stick to T.a.t.u and shut the fuck up !

  • wow, way to get your facts straight.. research before criticizing next time

  • The Clash were from the suburbs...The Slits are great!

  • Haven't you learned yet? Joe laid it out clearly articulating it and honestly like no other that it doesn't matter from what class you originate from but that you've got the true insight to understand and empathize and relate on a human level the human condition, you get it?

  • Rich middle class ?

Furthermore, you can be middleclass and/or rich and still be streetwise ?

  • That old british guy is scary and funny at the same time

  • I still think the clash did it better.

  • you're right. now fuck off!

  • so good

  • Budgie! Budgie! <3

  • Back when MTV actually aired great bands' and songs' videos. Ahhh.. good ol days.

  • the slits were true innovators in their day. who else could blend reggae, punk, jazz, noise, ineptitude and true madness into one musical genre? their concerts and albums always inspired and will continue to raise the bar of musical evolution. long live their spirit!

  • not just a hunch mate! the chicks across the pond were about 2 years previous, BUT!! you cant' underestimate how important " The Slits" were. .. 1st band ( pre clash ) to use Don Letts influence dub/reggae on a punk 7 inch platter, and utilise drum genius "Budgie"

  • youre right, they were the 1st band to do that, and budgie is an awesome drummer!

  • Actually their first drummer was Paloma (or Palm Olive). stories are mixed as to why she left - the fact she was an inept drummer is prob not as true as her desire not to take part in the Cover of their album "Cut" where the girls are topless & covered in mud. I think the 3rd drummer was Bruce Smith... he was terrific. Don't know whatever happened to him.

I was lucky to see them several times... although I wish I could forget Ariana dancing on stage with a streak mark on her panty.

  • Jubilee w/The Slits - filmed 1976/77

    Blondie - Formed 1978

Patti Smith - started making music in 1974

P.S. While Smith and Blondie are generally superior music, I wouldn't call this crap

  • Blondie formed in 1975.

  • actually Debbie Harry started a girl group in 1968 well idk if it was a girl group though?

  • Might you mean the Stilettos which she cofounded in .. gosh... like 1973? I do think there was a guy in the band - if not two.

  • Yes! The Slits are the greatest; and this song is the greatest.

Popular culture (such as it is) could sure use a dose of this creativity, enthusiasm and humanity.

  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and humanity? What is that? Where can I buy me some? :/

    Yes, punk is dead. RIP.

  • yup, real punk is dead...now you only see shitty bands that pretend to be punk and sell themselvs to the media...it's so sad.

there of course some exceptions like the slits here and others.

  • another exception is nofx

  • Still sound good today.

  • haha.. oh my.. this was my favorite song when i was 13..

  • maybe because being punk means not always being a "real band"?

  • What do you consider real punk?

  • sex pistols, the clash, buzzcocks, the damned they are much better and more punky in my opinion =)

  • Are there specific elements of the slits that you believe makes them less punky?

  • i dont know, i just think they sound crap, and its not very basic in my opinion, if u listen to say The Sex Pistols that is very simple, and that is what punk was about, stripping music down to the bare minimum to become simple.

  • youre talking about the male mainstream of punk. the slits were the first ever ALL GIRL punk band. while it doesnt sound like the clash is because it isnt suppose to. they ha alot of concerts where they performed with the clash. theyre a band because they had what it takes to be in the punk scene with the DIY style.

  • Kitty16, that is sort of how I feel. They did something totally unique...and isn't punk about being new and avoiding those conventions?

  • being punk was a way that everyone could talk about something. it was always about being different. if it was about anything else then it wasnt punk. the slits helped later artist like patti sith, debbie harry, and more to be different and stop being like a "normal" female. you know, where girls always have had to be in their "place" in life.

  • Weren't the slits influenced by Patti Smith? I am pretty sure she came first...but your point still stands. Though female punks, I suspect, still had to deal with being female. I cannot help but have a sneaky suspicion that what makes them not real punk to some people is their very femaleness. After all, an angry young man is usually not challenging anything other angry young men believe in, but an angry young woman...

  • ...still, some of it is understandable. They intentionally tried not to sound like the pistols and co. so if that is the measure for what punk should sound like then it is easy to see why someone would accuse the slits of not being punk.

  • ill admit, listening to music like the slits sounds weird. especailly with what i usually listen to today. but, when i think about what it was like then, you would have bands like evanescene, flyleaf, alice in wonderland, ect. what i find most intertaining is the way they performed on the stage at concerts. it was like 'we do what we want and you can fu*k off'

  • Of course you do - Good Charlotte is teh awesome!

  • god i love ari up

  • They were awesome!!!

  • Slits rule!!

  • fucking awesome dance moves

  • Proto-riot-grrl.

  • I like their dancing

  • punk or ska or is she doing a workout dance

  • Arri Up is sooooo pretty cute... divine beauty... she is a German Goddess! I love her.
