I just grow out a mustache+beard so it's less prominent, as for teasing and stuff. Well for me it ended around 20yrs, but people still judge like crazy, can see it in their eyes -_-
You look and sound great. The only major surgery that I've had was removal of all four wisdom teeth in high school. I had some over growth of tissue lazed on the left side of my palate recently, later I need the right side lazed. I'm looking at your mouth, but I'm thinking the doctors did a damn good job. You now have very kissable lips. Your boyfriend's a lucky man.
My little brother is 8 almost 9 and was born with a bilateral cleft palate. He has went through about 6or 7 surgerys and you can barely tell except for his nose cause right now its flat kinda like Ushers. But he is so cool about it and hes the sweetest little guy youll ever know. He's actually very popular which I'm surprised just cause he's a weird little kid but thats why the kids love him.

i have a question i have cleft lip and palate and i am way to self concious to talk cuz of my voice unless im fked up but is it easy to get like a job with this disorder because i want to make money with a legal job but idk if i should because the way i look
@rozz2656 i have a cleft palate aswell, i think you should jut try to be yourself and if you just treat the cleft like its apart of you (which it is) it shouldn't bother you as much, and as for getting a job, this should not affect your working skills, like i said just be your self, goodluck!!

Hi Katya, I was really refreshing to come across your video. I will be qualifying as a Speech and Language Therapist next year and as you are aware we often work with people that are born with CL/ CLP. It is nice to hear the perspective of someone that has gone through all the procedures and therapy instead of just reading the facts in a textbook. My last appointment my doctor asked how I like my appearance personally and I brought up those surgeries. It along with a lip repair is scheduled :) So Im super excited and hoping when its all done I look just as fantastic as you :D

I'm almost 17, but since I'm not growing quickly enough, my operations won't be complete until I'm 19. I got bullied when I was 10 years old and it sort of grew and my friends started to turn on me and I became isolated. Every time I walked into school, I was never greeted by my real name it was "Hi squishy". I became so depressed. But then I picked myself up knowing I'm not the only one going through. Now I'm studying to become a counsellor for cleft lip and palete's :)

Hey Katya, please stop telling yourself that you aren't pretty. When I started watching I actually thought to myself, "Wow, she is beautiful". Your eyes are exceptional and you radiate love and warmth. I'm 19 years old, young man, and was also born with a cleft lip/palate. I definitely think it gives some personality and uniqueness compared to all the "perfect teeth" and image nowadays. Plus my own surgeries were also things that changed me for the better; a stronger, more purposeful person.
You forgot to mention that we can telepathically talk to each other. If you don't mind i'd like to speak with you because I don't meet many people that have a cleft palate or lip.

@marennx3 never put yourself for I was born with a cleft lip and palate too and yeah it's hard but just don't let it get 2 u talk 2 ur parents and the school about it,they will help as much as they can to deal with it but basically the best thing 2 do is not 2 think about and yeah we cleft's may not be the best looking people(although some of us are/aren't)but I tell were much more considerate and more capable of understanding people who were born with deformities.

Wow you had twelve surgeries no wonder you look so great.I was kind of a hard headed kid, I didnt want anytime off my gymnastics and martial arts training so I had six surgeries,then later had to pay for a seventh surgery.Great vid Katya you're so up beat, the video is great to watch.
Do you know if everyone can get that jaw surgery??? and also the Rhinoplasty. its never come up in conversations with my surgeon. Should I ask about it?
@Blondeism101 it was necessary for me because i had such a large underbite and it needed to get fixed. you can ask him if you are considering it :D im sure he would have no problems answering your questions
@Blondeism101 Rhinoplasty should be available to every person who had a cleft. My daughter is almost 3 now and had 2 ops on her unilateral cleft lip and palate. She had a one step repair but developed fistula's. She has already gotten her next two ops planned one when she is 9 to move a bit of bone from the hip to the top jaw. And one at 16 for her nose. My baby was born with both(lip and palate) she has five surgerys at the age of two but shes a special baby i would't change nothing, shes soo pretty...:)

To cover the scars, I have used premanant cosmetics. I.e tattooing. This creates a much better lip line definition and covers the vertical scars. Of course it is important to be careful to find a GOOD esthetician. I have seen some horrible work done by regular tattoo artists. BTW, it is so easy to see the flaws rather than the good parts. One thing that amazes me is the symmetry of your face. Many people with clefts have obvious asymetry in the face. Your face is very symmetrical.

My son was bron n OCT 2003 wit same cleft lp & palate but he didnt get the tape on mouth or the retainer like your son he done had 10 surgeries since Dec 2003. He jus got a palate expander about 2 months ago we got bac this week an should be done wit the key an we will ge4t the go ahead to get next surgery.

I have a cleft palate too. My nose has always been normal, but now as I am 15 it's starting to get a little... weird. Is it normal that it gets "worse" when getting older? I was so lucky that I just got a small palate, so the only problems I have now is that I suck at pronouncing the "L" :p Earlier I had an underbite, but now it's fixed thanks to braces. I had problems with my ears as a child, but it was magically gone in the blink of an eye. Btw, I think you are beautiful :)
im proud of you :). Im the same age as you and I was also born with a cleft palate. I was bullied a lot in school so i can relate to you not only in that sense but also in many other aspects of life. You seem very strong now and thats the way it should be. Don't let the negative people discourage you because you're a very beautiful girl.
you crack me up lol. you remind me of you when I was younger lol. and it is how my 16 yr old daughter is now! she wasnt born with a cleft . I however was. I am 38 now, and girl no one messed with me in school.. lol I know that my cleft made me stronger! and never held me back in sports and was even a cheerleader.. what is it with cleft palates and lips, and the girls tend to talk alot and fast lol I am the same way lol
i would never be able to box one of my passions because of the scar tissue. I trained for two and a half years and won the 178 lb light heavyweight titleat the usa boxing new england championships in Portland, Maine in front of about 800 people. The moral of the story is we can do any damn thing we want if we just ignore the detractors.
to me and it was like a revelation of sorts. I finally said to myself fck it i am who i am take me or leave me. I also have some advice for young ones and that is to do what i did and start afresh. Clean yourself up and look for any excuse to self improve whatever it may be. Go for a run, get in shape, read books, find a hobby. Be the man or woman you know you can be! Hey Katya and all my cleft peeps lol, I just wanted to say a few words to the kids who r being picked on. Life truly does get better after middle school and high school. Speaking from personal experience i can tell you iv'e been called every name in the book from pussy lip, harelip, bugs, and crap like that. Kids can be mean but as you get older you start to realize that bullying will stop cuz people mature. I wish i realized then but i decided to take a different approach(the wrong approach)
I had a few experiances like that Brendan, only a few times.. cause I took care of business lol no actually I had friends and they was all over that before I could even respond, and it was found out later that the guy who said that , actually liked me? go figure that.. haha.. as I told someone earlier , we notice out scar or whatever it is, more than others. it never affected me dating or anything like that.. Awesome video! I also wrote my college application essay on having a cleft. I think it helped that I could write about something so unique - although all the places you have lived would also be an interesting and unique essay. Anyway, I realize this is probably a bit late for college application advice, but something I kept in mind was you should write an essay about yourself that your best friend couldn't say about themselves. Writing about a cleft definitely fits that! All the best
You do have perfect speech. I have a bilateral and miraculously also have perfect speech. I have noticeable scar tissue but can cover it up with a mustache. I dealt with a huge amount of prejudice as a kid and as an adult.

I was actually born with a cleft lip as well. I'll be going for my bone graft and a nose job to help with the air way blockage as well probably next year. Hi Katya, I was really refreshing to come across your video. I will be qualifying as a Speech and Language Therapist next year and as you are aware we often work with people that are born with CL/ CLP. It is nice to hear the perspective of someone that has gone through all the procedures and therapy instead of just reading the facts in a textbook. My last appointment my doctor asked how I like my appearance personally and I brought up those surgeries. It along with a lip repair is scheduled :) So Im super excited and hoping when its all done I look just as fantastic as you :D

I'm almost 17, but since I'm not growing quickly enough, my operations won't be complete until I'm 19. I got bullied when I was 10 years old and it sort of grew and my friends started to turn on me and I became isolated. Every time I walked into school, I was never greeted by my real name it was "Hi squishy". I became so depressed. But then I picked myself up knowing I'm not the only one going through. Now I'm studying to become a counsellor for cleft lip and palete's :)

Hey Katya, please stop telling yourself that you aren't pretty. When I started watching I actually thought to myself, "Wow, she is beautiful". Your eyes are exceptional and you radiate love and warmth. I'm 19 years old, young man, and was also born with a cleft lip/palate. I definitely think it gives some personality and uniqueness compared to all the "perfect teeth" and image nowadays. Plus my own surgeries were also things that changed me for the better; a stronger, more purposeful person.

@marennx3 never put yourself for I was born with a cleft lip and palate too and yeah it's hard but just don't let it get 2 u talk 2 ur parents and the school about it,they will help as much as they can to deal with it but basically the best thing 2 do is not 2 think about and yeah we cleft's may not be the best looking people(although some of us are/aren't)but I tell were much more considerate and more capable of understanding people who were born with deformities.

Wow you had twelve surgeries no wonder you look so great.I was kind of a hard headed kid, I didnt want anytime off my gymnastics and martial arts training so I had six surgeries,then later had to pay for a seventh surgery.Great vid Katya you're so up beat, the video is great to watch.

@Blondeism101 Rhinoplasty should be available to every person who had a cleft. My daughter is almost 3 now and had 2 ops on her unilateral cleft lip and palate. She had a one step repair but developed fistula's. She has already gotten her next two ops planned one when she is 9 to move a bit of bone from the hip to the top jaw. And one at 16 for her nose. To cover the scars, I have used premanant cosmetics. I.e tattooing. This creates a much better lip line definition and covers the vertical scars. Of course it is important to be careful to find a GOOD esthetician. I have seen some horrible work done by regular tattoo artists. BTW, it is so easy to see the flaws rather than the good parts. One thing that amazes me is the symmetry of your face. Many people with clefts have obvious asymetry in the face. Your face is very symmetrical.

My son was bron n OCT 2003 wit same cleft lp & palate but he didnt get the tape on mouth or the retainer like your son he done had 10 surgeries since Dec 2003. He jus got a palate expander about 2 months ago we got bac this week an should be done wit the key an we will ge4t the go ahead to get next surgery.

I have a cleft palate too. My nose has always been normal, but now as I am 15 it's starting to get a little... weird. Is it normal that it gets "worse" when getting older? I was so lucky that I just got a small palate, so the only problems I have now is that I suck at pronouncing the "L" :p Earlier I had an underbite, but now it's fixed thanks to braces. I had problems with my ears as a child, but it was magically gone in the blink of an eye. Btw, I think you are beautiful :)

to me and it was like a revelation of sorts. I finally said to myself fck it i am who i am take me or leave me. I also have some advice for young ones and that is to do what i did and start afresh. Speaking from personal experience i can tell you iv'e been called every name in the book from pussy lip, harelip, bugs, and crap like that. I think it helped that I could write about something so unique - although all the places you have lived would also be an interesting and unique essay. Anyway, I realize this is probably a bit late for college application advice, but something I kept in mind was you should write an essay about yourself that your best friend couldn't say about themselves. You do have perfect speech. I have a bilateral and miraculously also have perfect speech. I have noticeable scar tissue but can cover it up with a mustache. I dealt with a huge amount of prejudice as a kid and as an adult.

I want to say that you're so gorgeous, and I think you're cleft palate is part of it.
You wouldn't be yourself without it.
