  • I would have the presence of mind to explain that the entire population of the world could fit into the state of Texas with about 1000 square feet per person, leaving the entire rest of the world empty.

The Population of the united state is increasing by 3 million people every year? Big deal. When overpopulation begins to hurt, we will adjust. Not worried.

  • He makes a reactionary malthusian mistake of ignoring the fact that humans are potent. More humans do not equate mere dead weight and a drain on resources. As we multliply there are yet more of us to find and enact solutions to problems and produce value. If our numbers became large enough to more than cover the entire natural dry land surface area of our planet, we would already have been smart enough to have bulit skyskrapers that double the surface area we could habitate

  • @hagsmunamadurinn I agree. I haven't watched the rest of the series yet (and will probably will not) but I doubt he ever addresses the main problems of the world today such as the existence of governments and centralization. There's no need for centralization and never was. There's also no need for governments in fact governments have killed more humans than all other causes combined.

Most people have been brainwashed to believe they cannot survive without government and that is so wrong.

  • There is a simple solution dumbasses! ! ! Just have every country limit 1-2 children per couple by law. That way the population will either remain the same or decrease. No war needed.

  • @xmexdf1 Yes, it is the simplest solution, but there is the thing, that some couples would not accept that, because of religion or some concepts they are living in ... and that is the problem.

  • @xmexdf1 Yeah! Great idea! You go do that, and let us know how it works out.

  • @xmexdf1 So I guess China doen't seem like such the bad guy after all

  • idiots... who the f*ck are you to contest a Dr. of physics... the problem is, and seemingly always will be, that the education of people is below this"simple arithmetic". How can you understand the problem if you can't compute the numbers?

I have a chemistry final to study for.... before i end up like you idioits below complaining about something you don't understand.

  • @usernamelando Is arithmatic the only worthy and applicable discipline for this subject. Look for Wally Wallington on youtube. Why, I saw a Nova program full of scientists, PHDs. They had no explanation. They attempted solving it using the "technology of the day." They pathetically failed. Wally Wallington "RETIRED CONSTRUCTION WORKER figured out a plausible solution proven to work. WHEN THOSE WITHOUT A PHD ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CHALLENGE A PHD in wide open theoretical stuff. . .SAD

  • War does not decrease population. While there is a great deal of death, there is an increased birth rate during and after the war. Look at the US population growth after WWII.

  • this is why chairman mao got into one child per family?

  • @bishopdante yup. If he hadn't china would now have 3 - 4 billion people instead of just over 1 billion. Well, it wouldn't because there would have been a catastrophe by now to reduce that population or they would have invaded their neighbours. That one policy has saved the world and china a whole lot of grief. Yet some of us call it unfair government meddling in peoples private lives.

  • he is speaking behalf the cigarets...

  • Does anyone else want to be a tree(or an eagle or a lion- take your pick)?

Then maybe the real balance will come into being--Mother Nature

  • LMFAO!!!

It's intensely funny how much the asshole is lying through his teeth and distorting the problem... He understands perfectly well that he's wrong, but he doesn't care 'cause he's got an agenda to follow that's much more important than what's actually the truth.... Even funnier how many retards are buying into his lunacy.

  • @NxsRuin He states facts and sources. You state an indignant attitude. Hmmm, which one should I believe...

  • the numbers he's working with are false. Population growth curve in the U.S. at 1.6. Essentially a reduction in growth. In a few years that will not be enough tax payers to support his generations retirement. With immigration the rate increases to 2.11. Contraception is not the answer as the effects of it are already seen amongst those born in the U.S. Immigration control is the answer to reducing population growth in the U.S.

  • His math isn't wrong, you're confusing 1.6% growth with negative growth. 1.6% Growth is just that, 1.6% MORE people, not a declining population. He also isn't addressing taxes which rely on numerous other variables, like tax rates, salaries, currency fluctuations ect. Contraception and immigration control both contribute to restricting population growth.

  • Contraception is the answer. It will also stop AIDs.

  • yeah about the population. is he counting amount of death people a year? Also, history has shown us when the population gets too high, epidemics usualy wipe out a large population.

  • So Malthusian.

I think human population would adjust itself, or we would continue to expand into other territories.

But the fact that so many areas of the world is still so poor means that they will have to spread out. And why are they poor? Because they haven't realized the benefits of protectionism and free market economies. If big countries will stop dumping goods into those economies, they would start to grow.

The fact that you all underestimate the possibilities of human beings is sad.

  • Oh hey, gall bladder surgery in 2007 for me costed 17k, not 30, or 40

  • He's wrong about education. Education is proven to reduce growth rate - educated people have breed later and have smaller families. They barely replace themselves, most developed countries have negative population growth if you ignore immigration (which is, btw., mostly from less educated places).

  • Foreal, all you have to do is watch one episode of judge alex or whoever

  • Obviously this is a debatable point, finding a data set to determine a side to put education on would probably be extremely difficult.

However, without education there would be no modern technology, no modern technology, no rapid increase of technology and modern comforts, no rapid population growth.

However, at this point in time, the more educated you are the more likely you may be to choose not to have children, or to have a smaller family.

  • i agree that this is important but I saw this exact lecture on a different video(hes using an overhead projecter) and he uses the same jokes

    how boring

  • Does he not know what a carrying capacity is?

  • Do you know what the carrying capacity is?

  • Are you mimicking out of ignorance?

  • No. It's a serious question. Do you know what the carrying capacity is?

  • Yes, I do. What's your point

  • The carrying capacity is a factor added to the initial differential equation dP/dt = cP so it then becomes dP/dt = cP(1-P/K) where K is the carrying capacity and c is a constant which describes the growth. In this video it is Ln2. You can solve the equation by separation of variables and then you will get an equation that should decrease as it approaches the carrying capacity.

  • This guy is cool. Great video, very interesting.

  • The year is 2400 and theres an actual use for living in a one-square meter habitat in space orbit, the land squares are already taken

  • Also if indeed we can not support a population of a given size... then the problem SOLVES itself. The problem IS the solution. Contrived Wars, famine and disease are not needed to pre-empt maximum capacity, they will be both the inevitable symptom and cure of maximum population.

  • Any problem bound in reality that is carried out to it's extreme logical conclusion always "solves" itself in the sense that the problem will no longer have the physical and material means to occur. The cost? Unnecessary deaths, agony, and strife on top of the long term degradation of the ecology of the planet which will degrade standards of living for untold years to come. Why be reactive instead of proactive?

  • I'm just saying mass genocide or sterilization of the poor is not the answer.

  • They are answers, whether they're *the* answer is debatable. Whether "the answer" exists at all is also debatable.

Letting everyone fuck willy nilly is definitely no answer.

  • The growth rate is dropping. You NEED to factor that in to estimate population growth. When you do you'll see that the population will NEVER double again. It's still speculation but it's more accurate than simply extrapolating the previous years growth percentage out forever without factoring in the growth rate drop.

  • "Growth" is ONLY induced because of INTEREST.

Think about that word carefully :-))

Think about WHO profits from huge state deficits generated by means of WARS as the PRIVATE OWNERS of the so called "Federal Reserve".

Think WHO adressed the FED matter in the 2008 presidential show? Dr. Who?

Think about WHO of US-Presidents got killed because of the FED?

Any human GROWTH beyond 2,50 metrs?

Any tree GROWTH beyond 80 metrs?

Any FAT TUMMY continuing to GROW gets sick !

    PEOPLE WAKE UP!

    NOW!

  • the inflation graph is interesting as movies from $2.50 have jumped to about $12 per show now. alternatively this cannot be applied to electronics as they drop in price. a walkman or personal stereo player was very expensive when it came out. today a simple mp3 player can be had for less than what it would have cost if it were sold in reverse-inflation adjusted dollars during the time of the walkman release. usually food and energy seems to rise. technology seems to be relatively stable.

  • We add 3 people per second to our population. That works out to be about 90-95 million per year added to the earth. That is over 10 New York Cities in ONE YEAR!

  • how many do we remove because of car accidents, health, violent acts, diseases, and many other causes (people migrating in and migrating out), war, infant deaths, etc.? it helps offset it just a little. your citing also reflects the need for a plague which may just happen either in the next 100 or 500 years. every so often the earth finds a way to rid the population and bring the count down as is historically seen.
