I did this in 6th grade and the way we did it is we used hand lotion and got the skewer the same way you did but we had to very carefully twist and push or it would pop. You guys made it look easy. -.-

This is in my "50 Nifty Magic Tricks" book. ( more like "The Worst Magic Tricks EVER!" or "5o Nifty Pranks") Just put tape on the balloon. The tape holds the balloon together. The trick was " The Hypnotized Balloon ", it worked at a party. But I had to use duck tape. :(

I used to do this trick when I was a kid ...... just put a bit of clear sellotape on the balloon.
