The only difference with Warsaw was that an armoured French division of Patton's army was just 100 km away and rushed to rescue the Resistance, while in Warsaw the Russians waited until the Nazis had killed all Polish fighters, before resuming combat.

Though the situation was similar for Britain. As well the financial problems of the UK, the British were shown the door in India. Once India was gone much of the reason for holding onto Empire was removed. But I do agree the French government couldn't see that they were no longer welcome. Though I don't see how you think language comes into it. The former French colonies are largely francophone.

1st - the British left India as gracefully as could be expected given the times etc... well at least it wasn't a big mess like the French. 2nd - everyone speaks English either as a 1st or 2nd language and since language is the most important part of being human (after eating, sleeping etc.) then empire and all that bull becomes irrelevant. Esp. in the digital information age when everyone - the human race is connecting w/ each other. Language now shapes ideas, and culture not armies.

The British left, but what I was explaining was that the fact that there was no possibility of remaining in India was readily apparent to the British. But I agree with what you say about the French, the problem was there reassertion and consolidation of control over the people. As for language, I don't believe that the fact that English is easy to learn accounts for why it is so populous. As I said, it is because lands were controlled by Britain and then because of American influence/power

I agree with you totally and it isn't easy to learn - quite the opposite in fact. I never said that it's learnability or simplicity accounted for it now being the common language. That assertion was made by the other person on these premises. (see below.)

If they had been men, they might have been beaten or even hanged. This milder punishment was handed out exactly BECAUSE they were women.
Also, there was no law to speak of during the chaotic period of the Liberation, but the new French govt. quickly establised it. And ratified most of these action after the fact.

wassau, I don't intend to quarrel over stupid nationalist prejudices. Similar scenes happened in all occupied countries after their liberation (in fact, in Eastern Europe, such women were punished much harder than a 1 hour public humiliation). Nothing specifically "French".

How sad it is that France was considered one of the four primary allied countries during WWII yet it's contribution to the war effort was hardly worth mentioning. If FDR had been apart of the Potsdam Conference and a part of the subsequent war years, such a thing wouldn't have happened.
