No they shouldn't. The french grip is so goddamn limiting in foil it's unbelievable (try parry prime without comprising a good grip on it). It also makes it damn near impossible to flick. The french grip nowadays is pretty much solely used as a training grip to develop finger dexterity (as it should be). The pistol grip is far more comfortable, and if everyone is using it (which they are), then there should be no advantages or disadvantages.

i applaud the 2004 timing changes. Watching this match makes it more evident why they made the changes. They either had to change the time or alter the foil so that it no longer can bow so much as to allow an attack to land 90+ degrees from the point of origin. I was a dirty time for foil fencing, allowing a fencer a loop hole to exploit the safety design of the foil. It bends to absorb the blow of an attack. It does not bend to permit people to whip each other. anything for a light.

It's painfully obvious you are no fencer at all, if you think swinging your arms around like at a rodeo is of good form or sport. Scoring by means any other than in intended use of the instrument detracts from the sport and the art. Unless you're disabled I think FIE should limit the use of the pistol grip as well. It was designed for disabled, arthritic fencers so that they could enjoy the sport and still perform with less strain on a disabled hand or a hand with missing digits.

Cassara is a monster in the bout. He ended up with the bronze medal in the Athens Olympics and ended the 2003-2004 season the 2nd ranked men's foil fencer in the world.

Guyart would go on the end up 3rd on the points list for 2003-2004 but would end up winning the Gold Medal in Athens.
