I do not think Jeff Mangum is a hipster at all. I do, however, think that a lot of "hipsters" like him and, like Bob Dylan before him with the "hippie" generation, is unfairly labeled as something he's not just because a lot of people who like him are what he is being labeled as. If that makes sense. Random exposition, I know, but it's something I thought about before, being that both Mangum and Dylan are huge influences on me and I admired their work the most.

who cares if it's hipster or not? like for real, if you only like it cause you think it's hipster thats totaly ironic because the whole meaning of being hipster is being you'rself and not letting the world mold you, yet only listinging to "hipster" stuff is like not even giving a chance to other music styles to see if thats what kinda person you are also. but i do think this'd be clasified as indie rock fo sho, just because it's unique and true to itself. love it

Because I have a TOTALLY different idea of what they are, I think they are people who desperately try to follow trends, and do things stricktly because they think it's the 'cool' thing to do.... Jeff mangum is most certainly not a hipster, and neutral milk hotel is anything but hipster music, it's much to unique for that labelling.

It's strange how starkly this version contrasts to any live version I've heard. It shows more of the style he developed while he was working with The Olivia Tremor Control guys. On Avery Island shows flashes of brilliance - it may be held in higher esteem was it not for the mighty shadow cast on it by 'Aeroplane'.

Imagine how sad it is to hang out in Athens and have (mostly) 30-35 year olds go, "Yeah, I think I saw them at Atomic Music Hall in 1998, but I was really drunk, it could have been the Music Tapes or The Olivia Tremor Control."

But sometimes you talk to a Townie who remembers every Athens NMH show they attended, setlist, venue, price, Jeff Mangum's sweater. The legacy of NMH is still there.. somewhere.
