  • Rest in peace, Beverlee McKinsey and Michael Zaslow ... two of the finest actors of our time.

  • I see I am not the only one who digs this. I was never a soap watcher, but always thought this was brilliant.

  • This is intro is so AWESOME that I *never* EVER got hooked on GL. Just never grabbed me at all. BUT-- I made abosulely certain to catch the first 5 minutes of the show when they played this intro. Its so thrilling in ways I can't describe. lol...and since I never watched the show, maybe someone can tell me (1) who is the hot bare-chested guy @ 0:34, and who is the lovely lady dancing @ 0:37? Those 2 shots always caught my eye. I hated when they took those shots out that I stopped watching.

  • @ohleander

the people you were asking about are: 1] Morgan Englund played "Dylan Lewis" and 2], Beth Ehlers played "Harley Cooper".

  • Best theme ever!

  • I am a 31 male and I remember watching this with my mom when I was on summer vacation. It was on at 10 am every morning. Good memories.

  • Damn even in the opening beverlee McKinsey and micheal zaslow are awesome. Such class such talent I can't believe I'm just discovering these great talents.

  • @BoandNorafan4ever

haha! You better believe they both looked classy and awesome....even in just the opening. We all appreciate your sentiment. GL and the powers that be did not give the proper respect to the 2 crown jewels they had - Zaslow & McKinsey.

  • @BoandNorafan4ever

Search for a clip link to the 1990 opening sequence for GL, if you haven't caught it yet. Look at the last 2 cast members shown at the end - McKinsey and Zaslow - they look even better there than in this awesome 1991 opening!!

  • God brings back memories of me and mom getting ready to go out during the summer she would have to watch this about 10am or so Eastern before we went out and had to be back in time to watch Days of Our Lives lol awesome times with her I miss her I should give my mom a call but it's late now.

  • @detchuck

well, I don't know. A show "looking good" and actually "being good" are two distinct issues. Jill F. P. wreaked havoc on every soap she went to. She ran Deidre Hall out of DooL, she ran Genie Franics out of GH, and she wanted Kim Zimmer and Beverlee McKinsey gone from GL. And, she got her way in each instance. She made shows look great, but she was an alpha dog who didn't want each show to have a strong female lead. JFP planted seeds of destruction that sprouted after she left...

  • @DarthSnoopy96 great points but JFP thank God never helmed DOOL! Deidre Hall only left of her own accord in the 80s, then the most recent time it was budget-dictated. But JFP RUINED Another World and killed Frankie Frame and also Maureen Bauer from GL. Beverlee actually tricked JFP with a tricky clause in her contract that allowed her to leave. But had they listened to bev's complaints of exhaustion and long hours, she may not have left at all!

  • This Mounsey/Fitzgerald opening, which reinstates the lighthouse motif after long absence, dazzles. Yet interestingly it also reflects the chief weakness of the Farren Phelps era at GL: the tendency to substitute glitz, pace, and pyrotechnics for sound storytelling.

  • How could they cancel this show????

  • Looks just like AMC 's new opening. What a ripoff AMC LOL

  • I loved Ms. Beverlee. She may have been a vixen, but you could not help but adore her anyway. And man, was she beautiful! No one played Alexandra Spaulding like Beverlee. She was the best of the best, and way underrated!

Darn! They didn't show the part in the opening when the beam from the lighthouse sweeps away the GL logo! I always thought that was so cool.

  • I love seeing all the versions. It was weird to me that when this early verison of the opening didn't have Ross in it, a character who had been on the show for over 10 years at that point and they did have newer characters. It just seemed arbitrary.

  • Beth Ehlers might not be remembered for acting as Harley forever, but she will always be remembered fondly for her dancing in this opening that had her in it until her departure with Mallet in September 1993 -- although I know the scene had nothing to do with the opening music -- Ehlers as Harley's dancing is amazingly right on time with the music.

  • This was my favorite opening of GL! Now I loved "My Guiding Light," too. However, this opening was BOSS! Definitely was terrific when we would have dramatic scenes in a teaser, and you would hear the opening about to play...amazing. And who doesn't love Harley dancing at the end? That was the selling point for me!

  • This is the only intro I remember and like. my mom didn't watch GL but her sister in MO did. I remember seeing this intro while visiting her when I was 13. love the lighthouse! good memories!

  • GL was so good in the early 90's - loved thos opening as well!

  • Hands down, the best soap theme ever of any soap. Fantastic.

  • Love this song:) I hope I can find the instrumental version somewhere?

  • Wow, TWENTY YEARS this month ~ January 1991 this opening sequence and new theme debuted!!!

    GL was great during this time! {{sigh}}

  • @DarthSnoopy96 Yes, it's hard to believe this was 20(!) years ago already. I have such fond memories of GL during this period that it seems like yesterday. I remember that this opening sequence and theme song debuted at the beginning of 1991, in the first episode that aired after the New Year's holiday. GL was so strong at this time that it seemed like it would run forever. Little did we know...

  • The leaked new All My Children opening reminds me so much of this. :) And, this was my favorite soap opening when it first aired. :)

  • I miss this show. I used to watch this show at my Grandma's house. I really miss the Christmas specials GL had. I hope that one day there wil be a revival of this show.

  • Was this the very first 1990s GL opening?

  • @jiveturkey25

    Hi,

No this was not the first theme & open sequence for the 90's, but perhaps "symbolically" it was, since it was a fresh beginning.

From Jan 1990 - Dec 31st 1990 there was the 54-second slow/elegant tempo version of the long-running 80's GL theme, "My Guiding Light". That version ran from about November 1989 thru Dec. '90.

  • As a man I am ashamed to say I watched this show for much of the 90's but this song I love. Does anyone know the name of it?

  • @PAM2167 Hold on to Love

  • @PAM2167

"Hold On To Love" by Rob Mounsey. There were about 3 versions of it used in the openings from 1991 - 2002. One was a "jazzier" tempo, used in 1996. There's also the lyrics version of this, sung by (I think) Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack ??? Actuallyt I don't think that's right, but I forgot who at the moment...

But the lyrics version was used a couple times in 1991, 92, 93.

  • @DarthSnoopy96 It was Billy Chinnock who dueted with Roberta Flack on "Hold On To Love."

  • @OceanKingNY

oh right! I do remember that gentleman's name now -- thank you.

  • Best soap opening ever.

  • This will forever be my all time favorite GL opening.

  • I watched Guiding Light so faithfully in the 80s and I was always bummed when they'd change the theme song! I'd get used to it and the next thing ya know, changed!

  • Beverlee was a stunningly beautiful woman and one of the finest actresses...you could not beat that smile! She never got the recognition she rightfully deserved. And after Ritournelle, this GL opening and theme is a favorite of mine.

  • I Summon the Power of the Guiding Light!!

  • I will never forget. Our Beverlee left the show on a Monday or Tuesday and her face stayed in the opening the rest of the week.

On Monday, the clinking glasses were in her place. Sniff.

  • Yes!

All hail Queen Beverlee! She was the best!

  • That shot of Beverlee McKinsey gives me goosebumps. This majestic, elegant theme perfectly compliments her genius acting ability and her omnipotence over the soap opera medium. Ladies and gentleman - a champagne toast to THE QUEEN! RIP beverlee X

  • When I was a kid I used to play with a flashlight pretending that the flashlight was Guiding Light I miss those days.

  • LOL! Oh, I love this! How neat! I would have loved to have seen you. You just made my day with this one!

  • If you like the Guiding Light one you'll like this one I had a globe for a lamp and I would turn it on and everytime As The World Turns came on instead of watching the opening I would spin the globe and and back up until the music stopped and then went back to what I was doing but when the bumpers came on I would spin the globe but not back up and kept on doing it during the commercials.

  • i freakin loved Harley

  • And isn't this just the best shot of her, EVER?

  • it still pisses me off that this show is no more. this was my favorite of all time!!!

  • Wow, where have the twenty years gone?

  • magnolia banks said it all!!!!!!!

  • You made a mistake KHRAZYIE1. Although Barbara Crampton Played Mindy #3 this Mindy was played by Kimberly Simms.

  • You are absolutely right...I found out about two hours after I posted comment. Thanks.

  • LOVE THESE OPENINGS! Any from '83/'84?

  • Miss this wonderful cast (and opening)! Best of the best!

  • all i have now is memories

  • JCGHL - that was the theme previous to this. It was used in, say, the 1989-90 season. This one started up in 1991. This one is the best (IMO, of course)!

  • Who is the character wanting to talk to Alexandra Spaulding?

  • a recast of Mindy Lewis, Billy's daughter (played by Kimberly Simms)

  • Beverlee McKinsey - the Queen of Soap. Then, Now & Forever.

  • This opening with Alexandra Spaulding was priceless with Beverlee MvKinsey playing the role of Alexandra Spaulding.

  • the 90's and early 2000's had great openings.

  • cbs is so stupid canceling guiding light saying it was low ratings.why dont they take into consideration all the people like me who either taped, dvr,or tivo into their ratings.a game show is not going to work.bring back the light

  • I miss this opening. It was perfect then they had to go and change it.

  • This is one of the two or three best openings in the history of soap operas. The theme music, the legendary characters. We will miss you guiding light and the many years of joy your brought to so many.

  • I remember an opening from early 1991 that had Roger swinging a sword. Anyone have that one?

  • @JCHGL That one was the last update of the old opening, from 1990. If you search for 1990 you may find it here.

  • I can't believe I've been watching guiding light this long. Really, them 20 something years just flew by. One life to live and guiding light ruled the 80s and 90s. Young and restless ruled earlier in the day at 12:30A. I hate that their getting rid of guiding light. Whats going to happen to the others and other shows like this? They need to keep this side of life as a part of tv.

  • Despite they are the sponcer if u watch PGP is Proctor & Gamble Productions a pull of sponcership has nothing to do with ratings. Its cause of stars leaving and other reasons so don't blame P&G also I a right PGP stands for the prdoction company and its nothing to do with sponcers or anything. Also blame the writers strike for the low ratings.

  • Proctor & Gamble is the production company and they got nothing to do with Guiding Light ratings going down. Its cause of starts leaving or CBS just did not want them no more. Its a mix of things but P&G is not to blame here. Also they are the oldest soap now General Hospial will be the oldest.

  • Sorry but you're wrong. When GL goes off the air, As The World Turns will be the oldest. GH premiered in 1963, As The World Turns premiered in 1956.

  • No GCRams, General Hospital will not be the oldest soap, As The World Turns will be, it premiered in 1956.

  • I agree! Ellen Parker was so missed. I loved the few times she popped back up. I just love this show. I can't believe what has happened to it. I cannot believe it is canceled.

  • i will surely miss this show. it the longest ever..

  • This show was very good years ago but has suffered greatly. The new style is awful and makes the show look like some horrid reality show.

  • In my humble opinion this was Guiding Light's BEST theme! To me, it ranks up there with OLTL's theme from the mid to late 80s! Tops! And I hate for all the Light's fans that this show is being canceled!

  • I am crying while watching this beautiful opening of a once beautiful soap opera. Can't believe it has been cancelled. CBS and Ellen Wheeler killed this show...shame on them!!!

  • i agree with you so much...its so sad they did this....its kills me..."everybody feel high" and so on and so on....Pleeze.....Breaks my heart.....CBS better do a prime time send off or else

  • Well, call CBS and tell them to do one or see if they are doing one. I know they tape the show in New York and not in LA so you better off calling the New York Studio but, CBS in LA might know.

  • Someone needs to approach the networks to get a soap service going showing old clips, like AOL did...i would even pay a subscriber fee for something like that! preferably the P & G soaps -- GL, ATWT AW (70s and early 80s), and throw in some 70's Y & R! Since the internet is where we are headed anyway...

  • I love this opening its just so creative and beautiful

  • How sad to know tha Beverlee McKinsey will never be back. I always has hope that maybe she would be back one day. I wil watch the reruns with her forever and ever.Did you ever notice when she told someone to get out, she always said it with hardly a wimper but ever so forceful.. That is great acting, she was the best on Daytime.

  • Although Beverly McKinsey is dead, the show should have continued, but with the art of the writings of the nineties. GL failed because of its too modernized style, it looked too perfect and has been the last recent year more like an MTV show. Too much has changed compared to the time this video is from.We miss old GL!

  • @Restlessi

i think the fact that GL also became the de facto "Reva 'Kim Zimmer' Show" had something to do with how lame the show got by the early 2000's.

  • Why did they get rid of these credits? This was like the best theme song of any soap opera. The newer ones are awful compared to this.

  • Wow. This just reminds me of when I was little and my sister used to watch this. I do to. But of course in Iceland they're still showing the episodes from 1997 :)

  • Sounds like a great reason to move to Iceland! lol. the early to mid 90s was great! Everything under Pam Long, and then the writing team of Curlee, DeMorest, Reilly & Broderick rocked! excellent!

  • oh please,please,...if you have material about zachary(1997)and his last appearing, upload it!!! what happened to him? i was in the hospital and nobody could tell me about.

  • He was an Angel who was supposed to help Alan Michael & Lucy. He broke the rules when he fell in love with Michelle Bauer. In 1997 on the night of the Cedars Ball, he helped a couple who were on a boat from drowning, he "died" and he was never heard from again. He "knew" the Bauer Family from many years ago when "Mary Bauer" got pregnant out of wedlock which was a major scandal at that time.

  • thanks for all.bye!

  • You know what's really sad. Three of the actors in this opening sequence are dead. Hampton, Alex, & Roger.

  • ALEX is DEAD?! Nuh-uh. u.u

  • Yes, Beverly Mckinsey passed away sometime earlier this year or late last year. She was Alex #1 and by many she was the "best" Alex.

  • "the best Alex"??? ummm, try the BEST actress in daytime ever, and the best actress to NEVER EVER win a Daytime Emmy!!!! She and Deidre Hall never winning Emmys? Can we say the whole Emmy system is severely broken beyond repair? Yes we can!

  • Yeah, I know what you mean. Back in the day she "was" Another World, and to this day no actress can deliver what she did as Iris.

  • She didn't win an Emmy and That Tear factory Susan Luci won. What gives??

Susan is an AWFUL actress and should be shot like her character wAS on Dallas

  • wow, i didn't know the guy who played Hampton was dead.

  • Yeah, he died sometime in the 1990's. The cast members created a Trust Fund for his two boys and Nia Long played his daughter Kat Speakes. To iowahawke, you are so right on about Beverly Mckinsee. I remember when she played Iris on Another World in the 1970's, and I couldn't believe how brilliant she was as an Actress. My biggest anger was that where as Larry Gates (HB), Henry (William Roerick), Mary Stuart (Meta) and Michael Zaslow (Roger) all got tributes Vince Williams never did.

  • This was the best music and graphic opening for Guiding Light - PERIOD! The show is just whack now!!

  • Beverlee McKinsey was and will always be the only (Alexandra Spaulding), she was a fantastic star and thank God she left when the show was class because of her. She didnot need an Emmy, she was the Peoplees Choice.

  • You didn't like the Joan Collins stunt?

    *rolls eyes*

  • Joan Collins was pretty good as Alex. It's not like Beverlee was ever gonna come back. She quit, she retired. Should Marj Dusay have been approached to return instead of Collins? Of course. But stunt casting can work now and again. I loved the way Joan played her. Forgot how much I missed Alexis!

  • RIP Beverlee!

I remember the day you left. It was a Tuesday.

They kept her in the credits the rest of the week then on Monday it was the champagne glasses clinking in her spot.

    Sniff.

  • RIP Beverlee McKinsey. <3

  • I loved this opening! It was so classy and regal! Very befitting of a show that's been around for 7 decades!!

  • i miss the character of nola reardon and i hated what they did to her in the end with that stupid stalker story involving buzz

  • wouldn't it be funny if it were alexandra dancing at the end instead of harley. i miss beverly mckinsey

  • who's that lady speaking to alex before the opening credits?

  • That was Mindy Lewis #2, Kimberly Simms. This was when she was having an affair with Alex's husband Roger which would begin the terrific rivalry that would brew over the next several years.

  • thanks

  • I have been loving this opening too. Not too classy and not too modern. It was just right and mirrored the style of GL in the nineties.

  • Oh yes, I will always remember that shot of Harley dancing at the end

Best opening for a soap bar none

  • Actually, Regarding the coronation street comment about tracy, she has been played by four different actresses since 1977, not 1975.

  • I think that may have been me. I remember seeing a Photo of all four Blakes from People Magazine in 2000. I wish that Oprah would do a segment where British Soap Actors & US Soap Actors talk about their experiences on their respective shows.

  • I completely agree. This was the best opening and theme music for this show ever!!!

  • The gloss and elegance that was Guiding Light. I hope the new opening isn't too informal!

  • Beverlee McKinsey :)

  • Beverly McKinsley (sp?)

  • Thanks soooo much! I remembered her face and considering I was only 5 when I saw this there was no way I would remember.

  • This without a doubt was this shows best opening theme - They need a opening theme like this it was packed full of energy from the first tone to the last

  • Who is the blonde girl talking to Alex in the begginning?? What was her character name?

  • That's Mindy Lewis.

  • Hey, Yesimustbestupid, you may not know this but they do the exact same thing on British Soaps. On Britain's Longest Running Soap Opera Coronation St., a character named Peter Barlow was played by Seven Actors from 1968 to the present and his Sister Tracy has been played by four different actresses since 1975, the most popular being Kate Ford who won the British Equivalent of The Daytime Emmy.

  • I had no idea this theme was tweaked a little bit when I heard this on the classic episode. I am glad they did tweak it so the cymbals crashing are in sync with the light flashes during the cast visuals

  • I love this GL opening! This was back when I would try and catch this during GH's Eckert family storyline which was oh so dull

  • I saw two holes. I couldn't distinguish them as eyes. I check it out again. Could it be Burt Bauer faces watching from the clouds? That would be eerily cool.

  • This was a good opening better than what they have now..

  • That was a great introduction, a outstanding cast back then. The incomparible Beverlee McKinsey playing Alexandra.....great storylines.

  • This was the best opening ever!

  • Not my favorite but I liked this better than the themes used after this one.

  • The 2007 opening is the worst I've seen the show do, infact it's the worst soap opening on daytime. The 90's/lighthouse openings were outstanding and showed an innovative way to display the cast, like this one from 1991.

  • And that trumpet theme! so soaring! i love it so much that i even hate when clips are shown in the beginning of episodes and the theme is edited out! grrrrrrrrr!

  • 1991??? this is when bridget came to town, and her crazy boyfriend took her hostage in her own bedroom or something like that. he was stealing from the bauers. i remember that vaguely. i was only three=)

  • this was the best theme of GL. whoever thinks otherwise is a bunch of sloppy heads =)

  • does anyone see the face in the cloud while the lighthouse keeps turning and before the clips start rolling? thats pretty cool

  • I honestly did not see a face in the clouds but I did notice the CBS eye in the center circle when the words GUIDING LIGHT flashed across the screen toward the end of the montage, during each of the light flashes

  • let me explain it better. you know how the light spins around before the clips start rolling? before it shows the clips, if you look to the left of the lighthouse, in the cloud there are two "eyes" and under it is a little mouth. maybe it's just me however.

  • This was the suckiest intro ever. I hated that intro so much. Loved that Alexandra.

  • I loved the prior opening so much--that I really didn't care too much for this open and grew tired of it. I especially hated the logo, and it bugged me that the lighthouse was slightly off-center.

  • I remember that I liked the opening before this too.. but I don't remember what it was!! Anyone have it?

  • Blake #2 (Sherry Stringfield later of 'NYPD Blue' and 'ER' fame)

  • Sherry Stringfield was actually Blake #3. The young Blake then known as "Chrissy" was played by Cheryl Lynn Brown. Elizabeth Denehy (Brian's Daughter) was Blake # 2, then Sherry Stringfield, then Liz Kiefer

  • Actually Stringfield was Blake #5! Brown started in role of Chrissy, January 1979 (when Roger & Holly's married began, before the rape). Brown played slightly SORASed Chrissy (Chrissy was born in 1975, but Brown played character as being at least 6 years old -- because she was in school, which started to push character's birth year back to 1973). Actress Gina Foy was the 1st Chrissy.

  • And briefly in the fall of 1979, Brown shared the role w/ another actress (forgetting the name at this time) who alternated in the role w/ Brown (I'm assuming this was because of child work laws & the need for schooling) (this I learned from watching videotapes of episodes on both WoST & here on youtube from classicGL).

  • Who is the woman in the first picture of this intro?

  • Now that I look back...this was a good intro. I'm finding I really miss Maureen and Ed though.

  • I used to cringe at the fact the cymbals did not mesh w/ the visuals of the light coming onto the screen during the opening. I was always wondering, "Why didn't that flow together?" LOL but I was glad they changed it later that year so it could be in sync with the light flashing in the open where it pans from right to left.

  • Oh...I so miss Ed and Maureen...Vanessa...those were the good days. Not the best of the GL intro's but the cast was wonderful!!! I miss those days!!!

  • In fact, there are three different other themes to "Hold on to Love". This one used from 1991-95, the jazz theme in 1996 and I think there was an updated version of this one used in 1996 or 98

  • Actually, there was a fourth version of "Hold On To Love". There was a slower version (non-jazz) that was also used alternately w/ the Jazz version & the update uptempo version from sometime in January 1996 until May 1997 sometime shortly after they let Zaslow go.

  • After they let Zaslow go (one of the worst moves any show ever did, JMHO mind you all), and during the storyline when Reva was on trial for supposedly murding Annie's baby, they then went to that very brief spinning lighthouse w/ no cast scroll. That brief opening was used until June 2002, & that opening basically used the uptempo version but again w/ no cast scroll.

  • 1996

  • The second theme of hold on to love by the way features a jazzy tune which started in 1995. Is that right?

  • That opening debuted on January 2, 1991 and ended on June 2002

  • No, it wasn't until the first few days of July 2002 after the Springfield blackout. ClassicGL has recorded proof of this since they have posted all of the episodes in order during the blackout, & the eps run into the day before Independence Day that year (I think the exact last date of this opening was on July 3, 2002, after which they popped out the screen scroll of Kimberly Sims as Mindy who had just left the show).

  • Made a mistake there, the last time they used this scroll opening would have been on July 3, 1992 (last day of the Springfield Blackout). Yes, there were more afterwards. But again, they stopped using a cast scroll opening back in May 1997 after they let Michael Zaslow go (again during the Reva on trial for causing Annie's baby's death). More down below this.
