I spoke the chorus at my brothers wedding hoping they would, some day, have their own crew. They have now. What a lovely song.
Johnny our roots are in Mt. Pleasant Ave. I knew your mother and father,Paddy O Brien and Nancy ,all gone now and sadly missed. I went to school at the same time as Eric and Michael.I wish we could see times like that again. Be well.
I've been a Johnny Duhan fan since I heard him sing "there's a curtain to the left of me a joker to the right and the centre's no where to be found" - great man.
Thank you so much for this song. I learned it from David Yeates in Dublin a few days ago. It causes drifting tears into my eyes whenever I sing it for me wife and kids.
This will be played on Continental Drift, 10radio.org August 20th, 5:30 to 7 pm in the UK, 9:30 to 11 am in California and BC. For playlist, see wendelinn.
I must say I found this song via the group "Celtic Thunder" and thought the song was amazing. The passion and message is amazing and wanted to find the original. I had thought the Celtic Thunder version on was lovely, but yours is so haunting. It really is a wonderful. I am sure you are told that countless times. As a member of the twenty-something,I hope people will continue to find your music inspirational .Be well and take care, much love.
Check out the song I posted with him in Granny's Intentions - Story of David. Definitely a song to hear as well, his voice is great in it. My channel has a good taxman vid too to check out if people are interested!
@johnnyDuhan Went to see the group in Athy Co. Kildare in 1968, ye were support for one of the showbands( never liked the showbands) had heard Grannys Intentions on the Radio and wanted to see the group live, I wasn't disappointed,.Best of luck in the future.
I just came across this by accident. This is a brilliant performance - loved it. All the other versions (including my own) all sound the same and no where near as good as this..
no cover birdman404. this is the guy who wrote the song, singing it live. listen to the end of this video where Johnny pays tribute to Christy for popularising the song. if you don't believe me, ask Christy!
sorry doident meen to offend just heard that bobby sands wrote this in long kesh as a poem and christy moore turned it into a song johnny sings it good too will look at the christy moore album and see if johnny is down as the writer thanks for the correct info,
the song "back home in derry" is based on a poem by bobby sands called "the voyage". johnny duhan's "the voyage" is a completely different song which christy moore also sings.
My Dad passed away 3 years ago today. This song was played at his funeral (he was a prawn trawlerman & lived his life for the ocean and his family).
