  • I wish I'd thought to do that. Laying on my side was quite uncomfortable!

  • Did anyone else hold their laptop on its side to watch this?

  • Comment removed

  • first, second, third, I don't see why that is so important... what counts is the quality of understanding and ability to execute effectively.

  • The fool who was manning the camera kept me from watching past the 2 minute mark.

    What a true idiot.

Along with the fool that uploaded this.

And it's a shame because it seems the guy was giving good instructions in the video.

But only a retard will watch a video with his head tilted at a 90 degree angle.

I really can't believe that someone would just plop down a video camera on its side.

    Idiot.

  • if u dont take the knife away ur dead man

  • I have been looking into baritsu and what do you know ... I found my first demo video and the camerawork is aweful. Next time you document please consider a more appropriate camera angle.

  • you just had to put the camera down. sideways nonetheless?

  • we have to realise it was the ivention of the musket and the gun that created the break in western martial arts

Which is why we need these scholars to resurrect the past

For me that is what Edward Barton Wright was doing

  • the only thing still practical about this style now in this age is the scientific strikes, or the knowledge to know where to strike your opponent to do the most damage in the situation your in. while sword fighting is cool, how many people to do you see with a sword, or a cane? the rest are just pieces of better styles combined in an ill attempt to make a better style, but considering it died over a 100 yrs ago shows that it wasnt even that practical then and def not now

  • I just found this video and I've never heard of it before. I probably wont follow through research on it, as it doesnt really interest me. What pisses me off is these people saying that this is an inferior art to others. Well, you've obviously never been in a fight/life or death situation. More than half of what you've learnt completely goes out the window, all you have is instincts.

  • This guy is totally off the wall at 1:03 mins

  • The instructor has the wrong accent - sorry.

  • Are there going to be any more videos of this? Thanks.

  • why on earth would this be filmed sideways?

  • @jlayton1985 Very lame opinion. What matters is the fighter not the style.

  • @natharaja

Much of ESCRIMA comes from european Spanish fencing. After all the word ESCRIMA is Spanish and Italian for fencing.

  • I don't think Bartitsu is taught near me, and I live in England where the art came from.

Sack the cameraman for drinking on the job and slap him / her just for the fun of it. Actually, give them two slaps.

  • @zBloodD3monz

Although books aren't generally the best way to learn a martial art, in the absence of an alternative I find that the two volumes of the Bartitsu compendium are pretty good for self teaching, especially if you have a martial artist friend or two with whom you can safely practise. If you do want to learn Bartitsu, I can recommend them. If you combine the books with lessons in a related martial art (ju-jitsu being the obvious choice) you will probably get on even better.

  • Good work. Shame about the tilted camera though!

  • This makes me want to have a gun.

  • Who is the instructor and where is this training taking place? To me, the gentleman is quite experienced with martial arts and well versed.

Nice visual effects, though I don't see the point. Had to tern my laptop sideways to appreciate fully.

  • @bobashkin

It looks like this is Academie Duello in Vancouver...

  • You can get inside a sword easily--really, I will take that bet with you. What say we set that up and film it?

  • What he says is true as regards real world self defense a knife will generally be in you before you see it (assuming a skilled attacker) with a sword you are more likely to see it before it is applied.

  • So you are ready to take the sword challenge when?

  • Can I bring my pistol? :D

  • You said it was easy. Time to show it.

  • Ok then middle of a crowded pub in London ok for you?

  • YOu said you could handle it--so here in the jungle of Thailand. Waiting on you.

  • Ok pay my flight and Ill see you there lol.

  • You said you could do it so burden of proof is on you as are all costs to prove it. Otherwise, what we have here is a major talk without ability to do.

  • You people are retarded, he said a sword is easier to see, but swords have a greater range and are more defensive, he never really said that either one is easier than the other, he has no burden of proof, the fact that he is willing to joke with you about it is a testament to his being a gentleman.

  • Wow. Sorry, but that camera-on-it's-side stuff made this a torment to watch.

  • Just a tip, when you use the word "it's"... It's, short for it is. So when you say "camera-on-it's-side", say camera-on-its-side so it's not camera-on-it is-side. :P

I used to do the same all the time.

  • Yay! score one for literacy! I agree w/you completely.

    nuf sed (woops!)

  • As much as we admire Bruce Lee, I believe Edward Barton-Wright is the true father of mix martial arts, for he was the first person to blend Asian and European martial arts.

  • @6arcsn1sky I would agree... Bruce Lee did much to further western appreciation of oriental martial arts but Barton-Wright was truly the original pioneers.

  • True since Barton-Wright was ahead on the idea of mix martial arts.

  • @JediMasterMostoufi Wow, a mixed-martial arts fan who thinks this style is lame. If I were you, I wouldn't be too quick to judge anything based on methods and training. What the Gracies' did for MMA was sport while Barton-Wright and Lee blended Eastern and Western styles that can be used as dirty tactics in the streets.

  • @JediMasterMostoufi Again, acting like one style is better than the other. What truly matters most is the fighter themselves, not their styles.

  • @JediMasterMostoufi Laughable to call me "a lost cost." Besides, those Gracies in UFC's early years were lucrative acting like their fighting style is better than others though I don't see any jujutsu fundamentals.

  • @l2a3sterling Fighting styles doesn't matter, but the fighter themselves.

  • @6arcsn1sky impossible, since Bartitsu almost became a lost art he can't be a FATHER of something unless he popularized it.

  • @fireyhope Well, he did tried to promote his art, but his fees was what made it dormant for a hundred years. But still, Barton-Wright should deserve credit to be the first martial artist to blend in European and Asian styles.

  • @6arcsn1sky blending arts the way mma ppl do it is shallow and stupid as the only plactice how to make their movments look like they are mauy thai or boxing but in actuallity only a small percentage of pros and amatures noe how to fight wiht style trasition. MMA uses superior athleticism rather superior skill or concepts adaptation. bruce lee was more about understanding concepts rather than.

  • @6arcsn1sky look like he's boxing or fencing. and barton era boxing was very well developed since during the pre MoQ rule era and before the erra of gloves boxing was much more technical than its modern predacessor which wouldnt have stood a chance in the bare kuckle world and each fighter has his own theme and style

  • @6arcsn1sky they used hammer fists. back fists. and fore arm blocks. and they rarely hit head since there was a 90% chance ur hand would break, and figthers didnt want their oppenents to go out painlessly in a flash. they hit thighs and scoops groins with a fistic palm strike. and they favored teh solar pelxus since it caused the most dammge and pain. hook were only for close range.

  • @6arcsn1sky barton only brought back lock and throws from jujitsu becasuse the europeans having industrialised armys had no need to teach them the grappling methods of old popular up till the baroque period. but with the decline popularity of carrying weapons in public as well as the fact of growing urban enviroments the need for empty hand fighting required guys them barton to reintroduce techniuqe from another art that the Euro's had but lost

  • @kaindrg Nice detail, but you're just giving out way too much.

  • @6arcsn1sky u mean im saying too much

  • @kaindrg Exactly.

  • @6arcsn1sky Omg i complete for got i comment on ur top comment. wussup. in response to u last comment. I still dont quite get it. what am isuppose to not elaborate too much on? also i think that father of mma is just marketing. since MMA has become a style in it of it self due to the nature of the sport permitting only few options to make an effective fighter(bjj, muay thai and strangely semi effective boxing.)

  • @kaindrg Why bother responding late, and why do you need to be wordy?

  • @6arcsn1sky idk

  • @6arcsn1sky i did intead to respond but i stumble back on to this vid and recognized ur sn

  • @kaindrg Well, your reply doesn't mean to respond to me back now since my reply was ten months old.

  • @6arcsn1sky lol

  • @kaindrg And it's not funny either.

  • @kaindrg First of all, why bother replying back if ten months passed. I don't see the point into carrying on this conversation.

  • Documentary preview: "Bartitsu - the Lost Martial Art of Sherlock Holmes"

    Check it out on youtube

    Bartitsu Society

  • Whether Bartitsu is real or fiction, whehter the teaching we found today is lineage or not, personally,I don't give a damn about any of it...remember it's self defense we are talking about here...to me, bartitsu was(is) just a label , just like any other system ,the name or the origin itself is pointless to me,all I care is whether the techniques r practical or not.

I merely absorbing what is useful, discarding what is useless & simply utilize the most practical solution in a particular situation

  • You have single-handedly negated the eloquence of the works of Shakespeare. Good job.

  • Comment removed

  • You are a fool, without absorbing a style in its intended context and with its intended philosophy, you will never get to the point where you can use it unconsciously in a particular situation.

Either that, or you are as mighty as O-sensei in which case I would like you to open up a dojo so I can learn your amazing new style..\

  • Bad decision to tilt the camera. Otherwise, an informative video.

  • there are many bartitsu instructors around now--however, there is no real bartitsu, the guy is just giving his impression of his background---bartitsu died with wright

  • The best training manual I found so far is Cunningham's "The Cane as a Weapon." True, Bartitsu encompasses many more traditions than just the use of the cane.

  • @DamazViccar Read the version editied and expaned by Tony Wolf. He did a great job with it.

  • @mightydagon

I certainly will look into that. Thank you!

  • I have to ask, as there are NO lineage Bartitsu instructors; What are your qualifications to teach Bartitsu? Are you Ranked in Ju-Jitsu? Savate? Pugilism? There are a whole lot of unqualified people out there claiming they teach Bartitsu. Any thing that Does not appear in Print (Pearsons, Health and Strength etc.) is pure SPECULATION.

  • Long time ago I gave up on the idea that Bartitsu was real and until a couple of minutes ago I was convinced that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle simply made it up. :)

  • Nice video, just wish it wasn't sideways! :D
