This seems like an old clip and yet Soupy Sales references "Dynasty" -- so that has to make it 1981, right? Just seems more suited to something in the 1970s.
@snuffereet Their are only very few 10K Pyramids tapes that have not been destroyed. The only 20K pyramid tapes that are available are from 1978-1980. 50K Pyramid only ran for 1 year. Mostly the 25K and 100K are only available
It's nice to see the original thing. It sux that GSN is airing those new versions. It's a joke what they have done with it. Trying to be too fancy. Much better to watch those 80's version.
This was the last game show to be taped in New York City if I am correct. This was from 1981. Bob Stewart was the last producer to move to the west coast partly due to Bill Cullen's desire to remain in New York City and Cullen hosted several Bob Stewart shows.
This format was the worst among all incarnations. I really like Pyramid, but the $50,000 version was pointless.
Clock counts up instead of down...(For tournament reasons yes, but still...) no bonuses in the front game, Only $5000 for a trip to the Winner's Circle?! And to top it off, you didn't have to win a game to qualify for the $50,000 tournament, you just had to have the fastest main game time. So, in essence, you didn't actually have to go to the WC AT ALL to qualify?! Just Ridiculous.
Not to mention how unwieldly the whole Time of the Week system for determining tourney qualifiers was...ties were commonplace, and it wasn't unusual to see the contestants from the previous show brought back on the next one just to play another tiebreaker b/c the first one also ended in a tie...crazy!
I think the only cool things about the $50k: this is the last Pyramid series with the original theme "Tuning Up" and the old teal/aqua-colored backdrop; Not too mention, Alan Kalter would serve as the announcer sometimes and his powerful pipes gave the show some energy. So from an aesthetic standpoint, it was great IMO but the $5k prize and tourney rules left a lot to be desired.

i get tired of the mid-80's 25K and 100K pyramid, I wish GSN could do the 10, 20 and Bill Cullen's 25K pyramid from the 70's, better shows!

Well, by this time Bill Cullen had already done "Chain Reaction" in L.A. and at the time was doing "Blockbusters" for Goodson & Todman.

Millionaire (1999-present) and Password (2008-present) are now both taped in New York.
WhiteHatBobby 3 years ago
Also, the GSN 2006 revival of "Chain Reaction" w/ Dylan Lane and the current revival of "The Newlywed Game" w/ Carnie Wilson also taped at New York.
megamanj2004X 2 years ago
Not a surprise, since both were Michael Davies shows. That's why the proposed CBS 2009 Pyramid will likely be another New York show.

Pyramid will be back on CBS this fall?
sugarbear522 2 years ago
They've already shot 2 pilot episodes for the new $1,000,000 Pyramid... if it goes well, then yes, it'll be on this Fall on CBS.

There doing Contestant Calls on Craigs List, so CBS must have bought it :)

Sadly, this was one of his final game show appearances. He died about a month after this version of the Pyramid stopped taping.

Who died?
secondchance1977 3 years ago
Ross Martin died in July of 1981, about a month after the last episode of The $50,000 Pyramid was taped.

The question now is "Do they still have that money?"

The only thing I like about this era? The set was still old-fashioned and the different sound effects were cool.

Awesome win!! The trilons should have started wiggling like a $100,000 victory tho.

Nice clip...
I have to wonder if this was the era where, say, "A two-part story" would've gotten the buzzer...
darkstar7646 4 years ago
That wouldn't have given you a buzz at ANY era.

Bill Cullen hosted the first syndicated $25,000 Pyramid from 1974-79. This is the syndicated $50,000 Pyramid from January-September 1981.
