This is the performance when I first saw Jewel.. and fell in love with her performance.. I remember wondering... "who is this amazing singer... ?" ... and she shines in a cast of stars...
its not racist at all to have areal child play an animal. it happens in plays all the time. the Lion is played by a human too! so is the 'dumb' scarecrow character
The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True was a 1995 charity performance at Lincoln Center. The concert featured Jackson Browne as the Scarecrow, Roger Daltrey as the Tin Man, Natalie Cole as Glinda, Joel Grey as the Wizard (a role he reprised in Wicked), Jewel as Dorothy, Nathan Lane as the Cowardly Lion, & others. its on VHS and Cd, but rare as its out of print
I don't know about anybody else on YouTube watching this clip, but I really only remember seeing this on PBS, not on TNT or VH1. PBS even did the thing where they sold the VHS and CD of this similar to what they do for the membership thing where they have operators by the phones and the like....does anyone here remember seeing it on PBS?
@71crm Btw-I'm absolutely positive that I first saw this show on PBS and not TNT, I know it was PBS because they had that membership thing where if you pledge a certain amount of money you get the CD or VHS of the concert-I'm not making this up!!!!
Makia: No, I don't think people think that's how people from Kansas sound. I don't think she got the role because of her superb acting ability, but because she was a pretty big name in music with a great voice and the ability to sing the songs well, and was able to pull of a miniscule amount of acting.
Okay, I apologize if I offended anyone by saying I liked the decision to have Toto portrayed by a little black boy. When did stating facts become politically incorrect?
I think the fact that they cast Toto as a little black boy is AWESOME! Can't help laughin... and of course Jewel delivers a great rendition of a great song!
This is Somewhere Over the Rainbow at its best!! Jewel let Judy's spirit totally enter her for this performance and took it to a country-singer level, and added a touch of rockstar to her voice. I love it!! =D
Gosh, does THIS bring back memories! I used to have this on vhs when I was little! Unfortunately we lost it when we leant it to my eldest sister's acting teacher (and later mine) when she was producing a production of Wizard of Oz. And, not dissing Jewel or anything, but is that how us Kansans sound to others? I know everyone has an accent but, well, I just can't hear my own!
@MakiaLink My acting teacher said our accents are cold (like its not warm like her Oklahoma accent), we hold on to our R's and we speak through our noses.
Oh, and for those of you commenting on her dress; this is before she gets to the land of oz. She later changes into the "traditional" blue dress we all know as Dorothy's.
Thanks for posting this. I saw this when it first aired on TNT and fell in love with Jewel :). She was unknown then. This entire concert was brilliant. A true of work of art. I'd love to own it, but I don't want to pay $100 for a VHS copy. Thanks again!
Toto being played by a little black boy. . . it seems so wrong. I don't care if they changed the character into a little boy, , , everybody knows that Toto is a dog. It looks bad. . . Jewel did pretty amazing. I still like Judy Garland's better, but Jewel's an amazing artist.
I saw it one time have not seen it since i do remember it was great jackson brown was the scarecrow roger dadlry was the tin man debra was the wicked witch harlems boy choir it was awesome
It sounds like she's trying to speak like Judy Garland. I don't really like her version but it's not bad. Do you have any clips of Roger Daltrey as the Tin Man?
technically okay - a bit oversung and over arranged. Hard shoes to fill. You have to try something new if you are going to do it. Problem when trying most classics.
Great video. An unknown Jewel in 1995. Check out the entire video, great cast. Wizard of Oz Dreams Come True. This show was done for a charity, Children's Defense Fund. What really makes this song work though is Ry Cooder on guitar. Awesome!!!
@Palamino09 I honestly feel like Jewel has this concert to thank for her success. I think it's what got her the public recognition she needed to finally become a name in the industry.
@KekoaOnorati She didn't organize the concert, it was a charity thing. I don't remember which at the moment. She may have wanted to thank her fans, but she got her start the year this debuted, so there may not have been many fans to thank at the time. It might have helped her become a name, but it'd be more about how she gave her time and energy. And the fact that she has a great voice didn't hurt. :)
I have seen this proformance of the wizard of oz live at the lincoln center a long time ago. it had roger daltry jackson brown as the scare crow does anybody no about this i have not been able to find a copy

"For some reason, I think Jewel sounds better here than any other of her renditions of this song. Which is weird, because this was back when she was still up-and-coming. Usually artists get better with time..."
I agree. In fact, this particular rendition is my all time favorite--even above Judy Garland's original. But Jewel's other renditions of this song were not nearly as good for some reason--a bit of a disapointment, actually. Somehow, she really nailed it here.
@jgaarsoe in my opinion she is amazing no matter what however think maybe she ut more effort into this since she was not that famous.ur right.think tis beats judy garland by a long shot though.
@jgaarsoe I agree this is the best version. Almost as good is the live version at the Rialto Theatre, 2006 on You Tube. Maybe this one is better because it is a dramatic version. Jewel is so versitile, you don't know what you're going to get. She can sing in her little girl voice, a sultry voice, a country genre or yodel. Though I have my preferences (I like the original versions of her recordings) I always marvel at her skill.
@jgaarsoe Not necessarily true. Celine's still my favourite female singer but I think her voice has really changed from her 1990s days. Maybe it's just me.
She has such a beautiful voice. She did this so perfectly. The only thing is (and I know this was done a while ago) poor Jewel and that horrendous dress...
i've had a tape of this since i was three years old and i've loved it again and again. someone is borrowing it right now so i had an urge to watch some lol

I remember I saw this with my dad on tv when I was little. My dad told me Roger Daltrey was some old frail guy as a joke I guess, but the joke was lost on me because I didn't know who Daltrey was when I was in elementary school and I really had no idea what my dad was talking about... I still randomly remember the mic swinging part though.
FYI.. The Cast: Jackson Browne (Scarecrow...not the best choice) Natalie Cole (Glinda, the Good Witch) Roger Daltrey (Tin Man....swingin' that mic!)) Joel Grey (Wizard of Oz) Jewel (Dorothy Nathan Lane (Lion..Sensational!) Debra Winger (The Wicked Witch) Lucie Arnez (Auntie Em) Boys Choir of Harlem (Munchkins....also great!) Special appearances by Ry Cooder, Images, Dr. John, David Sanborn, Phoebe Snow, and Ronnie Spector
You missed The Wixked Witch and I think that was Debra Winger..I agree about Nathan Lane. The orignal of the movie is on TV right now and when the Lion sang If I were King? My husband and I said (at the same time) "Or the artist formalll known as Prince",,You can't beat lines like that!!
I have been wondering if THIS performance was recorded somewhere. FOUND it on VHS and am waiting for it to be delivered. WOW! I recall seeing this on PBS way back when!
Just heard her sing this tonight on PBS-Soundstage. Although it was nice to find her singing it here, I hope someone will post it from the PBS show - it was off the charts awesome.
Anyone know if this is available on DVD? I have the CD, and would like to make them a set.
