  • Anyone know if this is available on DVD? I have the CD, and would like to make them a set.

  • @dianaAthemiscyra It hasnt been released to DVD, only VHS, which I think is out of print. I could be wrong, though. Try Amazon.com or Ebay. :)

  • She wasnt being racist!!! She is the last person to do that! We cant have any form of bloody humour anymore these days cos of people being so sensitive about crap! What about the blacks making racist renarjs against the whites for humour??? Honestly get over yourself! Take out the rod thats inside the other rod thats up ur ass and free urself from negativity already! We can no longer say "black board or ba ba black sheep" anymore cos its deemed racist. Grow the f up and get over it!!

  • Toto played by a little black kid...racist bastards. I would rather she carried a stuff dog than pull that use a little black kid in this scene.

  • she always knocks me out...

  • Man, does this bring me back to my childhood.

  • Probably,,,, it's a play. You can bet that every kid in the cast wanted to be Toto. Heck, I wanted to be Toto, and I'm a 60 year old honky fireman.

  • So, am I the only one a little disturbed by the fact that Toto is played by a little black boy?

  • @18haylo yes

  • @18haylo Yes! Why does everything have to become racial? WTF??

  • @mamabear2774 that's my mommy! raised me right

  • I saw this ages ago on tv, it's such a good production. Thanks for posting, I'd forgotten about it until now. I need to find it on DVD!

  • gives me chills...

u have this "effect" on me, jeweL! i luv listening to ur songs!!!

  • I love this classic. jewel was awesome!

  • Watching this makes me SO happy that my grandparents recorded it for my parents and me sometime in 1990's. It may be on VHS, but it's still amazing.

Now I just need to find the tape...............

  • What the??? Was that Ry Cooder I saw on guitar??? Sweet!!!

  • I would love to see the whole video.....

  • I agree. It seems her vocal talent has decreased since this song. Which is a hard song to sing.

  • holy hell, so intense about 3 mins in, she looooses herself in that climax!

  • it's uncanny how much she looks like Renee Zellwegger

  • oh wow.... im truly speechless

  • its on VHS and CD on Amazon and ebay used.-its long since out of print and not on DVD sadly

  • Just fantastic... Bravo!!

  • This is the performance when I first saw Jewel.. and fell in love with her performance.. I remember wondering... "who is this amazing singer... ?" ... and she shines in a cast of stars...

  • tears in my eyes, oh my.

  • its not racist at all to have areal child play an animal. it happens in plays all the time. the Lion is played by a human too! so is the 'dumb' scarecrow character

  • The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True was a 1995 charity performance at Lincoln Center. The concert featured Jackson Browne as the Scarecrow, Roger Daltrey as the Tin Man, Natalie Cole as Glinda, Joel Grey as the Wizard (a role he reprised in Wicked), Jewel as Dorothy, Nathan Lane as the Cowardly Lion, & others. its on VHS and Cd, but rare as its out of print

  • Slow upload... ( and No, I don't have slow internett.)

  • did this happen in utah

  • @mariners51ichirofan No, it happened at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincolin Center in NYC

  • I don't know about anybody else on YouTube watching this clip, but I really only remember seeing this on PBS, not on TNT or VH1. PBS even did the thing where they sold the VHS and CD of this similar to what they do for the membership thing where they have operators by the phones and the like....does anyone here remember seeing it on PBS?

  • Comment removed

  • @71crm Btw-I'm absolutely positive that I first saw this show on PBS and not TNT, I know it was PBS because they had that membership thing where if you pledge a certain amount of money you get the CD or VHS of the concert-I'm not making this up!!!!

  • Ry Cooder!

  • I like the way that, starting at 2:50, she stomps her heel to the timpani.

  • Makia: No, I don't think people think that's how people from Kansas sound. I don't think she got the role because of her superb acting ability, but because she was a pretty big name in music with a great voice and the ability to sing the songs well, and was able to pull of a miniscule amount of acting.

  • Okay, I apologize if I offended anyone by saying I liked the decision to have Toto portrayed by a little black boy. When did stating facts become politically incorrect?

  • it's great to see Jewel in this video, before she became JEWEL...the singer i love the most .

  • i had this video tape somewhere and i used to be OBSESSED with it!!!! i want to find the rest of this! :)

  • @PeterPanDisneyDork

It's on VHS currently. No word of a DVD yet.

  • @SnugglySara aw... sad panda... :(

  • I think the fact that they cast Toto as a little black boy is AWESOME! Can't help laughin... and of course Jewel delivers a great rendition of a great song!

  • @TheMandystrickland Oh my god thats so political incorrect.I`m surprise you didn`t get your balls broken on this.Jewel was awesome wasn`t she.

  • @TheMandystrickland They should have casted Jewel as Toto so that she could have kept her trap shut. She's horrible.

  • @Flozzy1000 She was alright.

  • This is Somewhere Over the Rainbow at its best!! Jewel let Judy's spirit totally enter her for this performance and took it to a country-singer level, and added a touch of rockstar to her voice. I love it!! =D

  • i love this song! Makes me cry evrytime.

  • Wow ..... Jewell owns that song.... Everyone else get in line.

  • Gosh, does THIS bring back memories! I used to have this on vhs when I was little! Unfortunately we lost it when we leant it to my eldest sister's acting teacher (and later mine) when she was producing a production of Wizard of Oz. And, not dissing Jewel or anything, but is that how us Kansans sound to others? I know everyone has an accent but, well, I just can't hear my own!

  • Comment removed

  • @MakiaLink My acting teacher said our accents are cold (like its not warm like her Oklahoma accent), we hold on to our R's and we speak through our noses.

  • she looks like renee zellweger

  • Oh, and for those of you commenting on her dress; this is before she gets to the land of oz. She later changes into the "traditional" blue dress we all know as Dorothy's.

  • Thanks for posting this. I saw this when it first aired on TNT and fell in love with Jewel :). She was unknown then. This entire concert was brilliant. A true of work of art. I'd love to own it, but I don't want to pay $100 for a VHS copy. Thanks again!

  • Toto being played by a little black boy. . . it seems so wrong. I don't care if they changed the character into a little boy, , , everybody knows that Toto is a dog. It looks bad. . . Jewel did pretty amazing. I still like Judy Garland's better, but Jewel's an amazing artist.

  • I remember when this came out?

  • It's there......you get there on the inner with your heart!.... Great job, Jewel!

  • Somewhere.......

  • magnifique!

  • tabs... chords... please?

  • Amazinnnnn!!!!!

  • I saw it one time have not seen it since i do remember it was great jackson brown was the scarecrow roger dadlry was the tin man debra was the wicked witch harlems boy choir it was awesome

  • My sweet babboo stole the show!

  • @darryldelay It's DALTREY. :-) (I sound like Hyacinth reminding people "it's bouquet!")

  • Neato...she sang the deleted verse. Does anyone know where I could find her album version from Lullabye?

  • aww i remember when this aired. i was like 4 and my parents taped it and i watched it allllll the time. awesome.

  • hmmmm i love the song but the little black boy as toto hmmmmmmmm something about it seems so wrong

  • yeah a bit a bit

  • her voice was AWESOME!

her low notes were great, and usually a high singer sings weak low notes

and that guy on the guitar really tore it up

[and calling a little blackboy 'Toto' is just th most]

  • It sounds like she's trying to speak like Judy Garland. I don't really like her version but it's not bad. Do you have any clips of Roger Daltrey as the Tin Man?

  • Comment removed

  • amazing! kiss ya jewel! i will sing this song at a contest next month

  • technically okay - a bit oversung and over arranged. Hard shoes to fill. You have to try something new if you are going to do it. Problem when trying most classics.

  • I wish I had a place to watch this again..I havent seen it since it aired

  • I think this is better than the one on the new CD "Lullaby" But both are wonderfully performed.

  • Nothing less then stunning!

  • beautiful!!!!

  • Oh man! Talk about old school Jewel!

  • Great video. An unknown Jewel in 1995. Check out the entire video, great cast. Wizard of Oz Dreams Come True. This show was done for a charity, Children's Defense Fund. What really makes this song work though is Ry Cooder on guitar. Awesome!!!

  • @Palamino09 I honestly feel like Jewel has this concert to thank for her success. I think it's what got her the public recognition she needed to finally become a name in the industry.

  • @KekoaOnorati She didn't organize the concert, it was a charity thing. I don't remember which at the moment. She may have wanted to thank her fans, but she got her start the year this debuted, so there may not have been many fans to thank at the time. It might have helped her become a name, but it'd be more about how she gave her time and energy. And the fact that she has a great voice didn't hurt. :)

  • I loved this!!! I have this on tape also

  • jewel is soooooo pretty

i have this video on tape

  • I have seen this proformance of the wizard of oz live at the lincoln center a long time ago. it had roger daltry jackson brown as the scare crow does anybody no about this i have not been able to find a copy

  • Yeah, where can I get a copy too.

  • @darryldelay You were lucky to have seen it in person!

  • This is great! Thank you ... a new favorite for me! :)

  • can someone explain to me why's the name Toto funny? :(

  • Because in this show Toto is a little boy and in the movie he's a dog. It's just cute.

  • This blew me away to hear this. Jewel had just been signed and was still unheard of. She's amazing. Jewel only had 1 or 2 days of rehearsals for this appearance. Jewel is an outstanding performer

  • lol.,..toto?

  • AMAZING~~!!!

  • Check out John Martyn's version...wonderful too.

  • She's a real artist, not an American idol made up one. Never know when their talent will come out.

  • If you have this Video,My solo part was we thank you very sweetly for doing it so neatly...lol...I hope you can post that part if you have it.

  • Sorry but I have only that.

  • @nullfull

  • i was apart of this performance

  • so was i

  • i remember this..

  • I love how she sings this !

  • OMG! this is sooooo cool!

  • OMG...I love this....except...that dress....it makes me laugh..I just cant believe JEWEL is wearing a big poofy dress...lol....but hey...its a great video...KUDOS!!....♥♥♥

    Jenni Leih

  • This was such a fun show all the way around. I can't believe how much Jewel looks like Meryl Streep. It seems like she would have some acting ability. Someone should write a movie for them as mother and daughter.

  • did anyone else know Julia Murney was in this? she was Elphaba in the tour and on broadway in WICKED.

  • This is great to have on youtube, it's the version with the cut lyrics "Someday I'll wane and rub my eyes..." Thanks!

  • My pleasure. ;-)

  • Is this the version where Nathan Lane played the Cowardly Lion? He made a good Lion.

  • Yea, this is it.

  • @Adamguy2003 Everyone was good.

  • ah this is so beautiful :)

  • For some reason, I think Jewel sounds better here than any other of her renditions of this song. Which is weird, because this was back when she was still up-and-coming. Usually artists get better with time...

  • "For some reason, I think Jewel sounds better here than any other of her renditions of this song. Which is weird, because this was back when she was still up-and-coming. Usually artists get better with time..."

I agree. In fact, this particular rendition is my all time favorite--even above Judy Garland's original. But Jewel's other renditions of this song were not nearly as good for some reason--a bit of a disapointment, actually. Somehow, she really nailed it here.

  • I agree with you, this was her moment

  • @jgaarsoe in my opinion she is amazing no matter what however think maybe she ut more effort into this since she was not that famous.ur right.think tis beats judy garland by a long shot though.

  • @jgaarsoe My favorite, too! Even above Judy's! *high fives*

  • @jgaarsoe I agree this is the best version. Almost as good is the live version at the Rialto Theatre, 2006 on You Tube. Maybe this one is better because it is a dramatic version. Jewel is so versitile, you don't know what you're going to get. She can sing in her little girl voice, a sultry voice, a country genre or yodel. Though I have my preferences (I like the original versions of her recordings) I always marvel at her skill.

  • @jgaarsoe Not necessarily true. Celine's still my favourite female singer but I think her voice has really changed from her 1990s days. Maybe it's just me.

  • She has such a beautiful voice. She did this so perfectly. The only thing is (and I know this was done a while ago) poor Jewel and that horrendous dress...

  • Could you please upload the scene where the Cowardly Lion is introduced?

  • Sorry but I have only that.

  • That's okay.

  • Beautiful voice

  • i've had a tape of this since i was three years old and i've loved it again and again. someone is borrowing it right now so i had an urge to watch some lol

  • Wow Jewel looks so different.. I love her version of this song, she just leaves me speechless..

  • When she started to sing this you wondering if she was going to either hack it or do well. She did this beautiful. What a talent.Judy Garland did this at such a tender age.Jewel did this with her talent. They both did it so well in a different time. They were both great at in a different way.

  • Best version of Wizard of Oz.

Wish PBS would rerun or remake it!!

  • Or put it on DVD already!

  • it is

  • I remember I saw this with my dad on tv when I was little. My dad told me Roger Daltrey was some old frail guy as a joke I guess, but the joke was lost on me because I didn't know who Daltrey was when I was in elementary school and I really had no idea what my dad was talking about... I still randomly remember the mic swinging part though.

  • I fell for him when I was 13.

  • FYI.. The Cast: Jackson Browne (Scarecrow...not the best choice) Natalie Cole (Glinda, the Good Witch) Roger Daltrey (Tin Man....swingin' that mic!)) Joel Grey (Wizard of Oz) Jewel (Dorothy Nathan Lane (Lion..Sensational!) Debra Winger (The Wicked Witch) Lucie Arnez (Auntie Em) Boys Choir of Harlem (Munchkins....also great!) Special appearances by Ry Cooder, Images, Dr. John, David Sanborn, Phoebe Snow, and Ronnie Spector
  • You missed The Wixked Witch and I think that was Debra Winger..I agree about Nathan Lane. The orignal of the movie is on TV right now and when the Lion sang If I were King? My husband and I said (at the same time) "Or the artist formalll known as Prince",,You can't beat lines like that!!

  • Man to bad I was living in Buffalo at that time. I would've been right up front and give my sweet babboo flowers as the cast was taking their bows!

  • @beatlesque2 i agree with the nathan lane comment, hes amazing xxx

  • Because thats the way god planned it

  • Can you or anyone upload the whole concert? I seen part of it but not the whole show.

  • Sorry but I don't have the whole show.

  • If you can get it on ebay or amazon, you can upload it from VHS tape. How's that?

  • i have the whole show, but it's the vhs. (i was lucky enough to get it before it was 100 dollars on ebay)

  • she is perfect.. she has a dramatic life story. she deserves all fame that she has now

  • I fell in love with her when I first saw this in the late 90's, thanks.

  • This is twice as good as her more recent performance of it.

  • Joel Grey played The Wizard in this, he would also play The Wizard in the original Broadway cast of Wicked. Guess he went full circle there.

  • The Wizard Of Oz In Concert was first

performed on TNT on Cable and later on

    PBS TV.

  • Shes so sweet in this dress, and her voice is the best iv ever heared shes so underrated i love her!

  • OMG thank you for posting this its so awesome!!! freaking awesome never seen the performance just the mp3.

  • She should have used a sweeter voice for this song. I heard she was operatically trained. Why doesn't she ever use that?

  • Because Jewel doesn't sound like Jewel when she sings opera. You can tell she's trying to sound like Judy Garland when she's doing her lines, though.

  • what is operactically trained??

  • I love you Jewel!

  • Jewel is amazing, but why is Toto played by a little boy? :S

  • that was amazing. i love jewel.

  • I have been wondering if THIS performance was recorded somewhere. FOUND it on VHS and am waiting for it to be delivered. WOW! I recall seeing this on PBS way back when!

  • simply "wow!"

  • Just heard her sing this tonight on PBS-Soundstage. Although it was nice to find her singing it here, I hope someone will post it from the PBS show - it was off the charts awesome.

  • bestinterpretation ever of this song.

  • Fantastic voice!
