@MurdocLC.. Ikea is a Swiss name, Hence the Swiss guy.. Not sure about the actual heritage of the company itself, but it's a Swiss name... Jus sayin';)
@Pitbulinaskirt.. Swiss name? What's wrong with you people that always mix Sweden and Switzerland up? IKEA is an acronym for Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd. Ingvar Kamprad is the name of the founder (and he's still active in the company at 85yo...). Elmtaryd is the name of the farm where he grow up and Agunnaryd the name of the parish. Just sayin' ;)
Whats sad isn't the lamp, but that a lamp that appears to be in perfect working order wasn't sold, put up on freecycle, or left at a local charity thrift store. Somebody else could have gotten more use out of it. Likewise, places that have "theft by finding" laws which encourage waste like this are sad too, since somebody "rescuing" stuff off the curb could be penalized for it.
@pauljs75 This is nothing. In Japan almost brand new TV sets occasionally with an accomodating audio system and all are thrown out just 'cuz the former owner can now afford a newer model. :P
@neongecko06 At least in Japan there's a habit to put the electronic in a specially designated corner where people can go there and pick up things they want.
If there's no one who pick it up it will be taken to be incinerated.
i remember my sister was starting to get all empathetic, and went "awwww that's so sad" and as soon as she did it that guy came in! it was so awesome!!
as much as I find this commercial hilarious, I also find it a little wasteful, I mean, tha was a perfectly good lamp, and she's jusrt throwing it out? not gonna tuck it away just in case or give it to a friend or something?
@Exarian That's exactly what I do. I don't feel sorry for inanimate objects (with the exception of a lamp in rain to sad music), but I've got old toys, TVs, games, CDs, videos, anything you can think of. I don't throw them away. I give them away, either to anybody that wants them, or donate them to a charity shop. And charity shops are the best place ever to get stuff that still works on the cheap!
It's mistaken to feel sorry for an inanimate object, but it's certainly understandable. Now let's take our sympathy and direct it toward something appropriate like homeless animals, or victims of natural disasters. Donate $20 to a charity and you have struck a blow against pain and suffering!
You know you watched Brave Little Toaster when you feel sorry for a little lamp.

You euthanized your faithful Ikea lamp more quickly than any test subject on record. Congratulations.
