You can clone a Mac hard drive to an external Firewire or USB2 drive if you have a newer Mac. Firewire 800 is the best of all! You can then boot from that external drive.

You will need third party software to do this. I use the free Carbon Copy Cloner but Super Duper has more features and is very reasonably priced.

I have both a clone of my boot drive that gets updated a couple of times a week, and I use Time Machine to backup of my data on a second external drive.
