Dooku had to die to 1. help anakin grow closer to the dark side, and 2. to give himself a new main apprentice. His plan for darth vader's death is that luke would replace him, but that obviously didnt work out :p

Also, having the Anakin from Episode 3 standing within the Force at the end of the film is probably the worst thing Lucas has ever done. The deceased are supposed to appear as of when they died. Not only does this do away with logical reasoning, it is also a cruel deletion of the actor who played Darth Vader (not JEJ who just did the voice). Before we know it, Alec Guinness will be lost as well. This is a pure tragedy for the inclusion of some of the best actors in cinematic history.

@TheViolord Showing Vader in Anakin's form shows that he disposed of his dark self and became the good person Luke knew he was before giving in to the dark side. Vader = bad self = dead, whereas Anakin = true self = rescued. It shows that Anakin breathes again and will be able to continue his path as a light side spirit, in union with the Force.

In general, to show the deceased not on their last, but on their finest form is a way to reinforce their merits. It's just a technique.

@TheViolord There would be nothing wrong with removing the actor's image that played Vader in the mask scene. He played well a dark side character. There's no use of him in the following scene. Both actors played their parts, and are admired for each. I don't think there's an exclusion, in the same sense that there's no between JEJ, the tall actor in the suit and the third that played him in the mask scene. Christensen's the fourth, and they're all complementary, imo.

It is pointless comparing the original trilogy and its unaltered components to the prequel trilogy. The fight scenes are not supposed to be about how many times a second you can swing your saber or millions of acrobatic stunts which are too fast even for the keen eye. The point is that this is acting. The imperfections and the short breaks between conflict make it feel real. Also, the characters in conflict are always related. There is purpose beyond the action.

Emperor Palpatine is indeed one of the most evil and greatest movievillain of all time and Darth Vader ! Ian McDarmid did an outstanding and memorable performance as Palpatine.
