  • no, no, he was never influenced by hendrix, it was all santana and clapton. sure Ed.....

you don't hear ANY hendrix licks (and Pagey licks for that matter) in this early clip do you?

Great rocking clip though. Thanks for posting

  • People forget there was NOTHING ELSE even close to being like the Van Halen sound back then... it was totally new dynamically whether you liked them or not, it was unique. Not just Eddie's "tapping" it was his rhythm sound, the way he played and wrote songs, and his lead guitar tone, nobody sounded like that until he did it.

  • @AetroyayorteA AMEN! Everyone ALWAYS talks about his "tapping" or his speed. Fuck that. His rhythm guitar playing was fucking INCREDIBLE and extremely under rated. And yes, Ed wrote songs like nobody else. He is a musical GOD. And his tone? Oh my... the best! Eddie was the whole package and no one (IMO) has ever come close. Sure, there are great guitarist out there who are faster and whatnot but there's no soul, no melody. Not like the Might Edward Lodewijk Van Halen!

  • I got into this back when Rush put out Moving Pictures, an older guy down the street used to blast Eruption at about 100watts and you could hear it al the way down the street, probably for blocks over the summer, he heard i was interested in it so he traded me the Van Halen album for Moving Pictures. Fair Warning was my first concert. I wish i could have seen this first album tour.

Eddie just lays it down, destroys... then launches into You Really Got me, it must have melted faces back then.

  • let it be said without jimi there would be no sound.

and furthermore,if you have never seen live hendrix

shows then either your lazy or just tonedeaf.or both.

Edward is a Revolutionary player who also changed

the path of heavy guitar with both sound and technique.

heres some schooling for you:go and check out jimmy page

covering the hendrix classic Voodoo-Chile.ah,its on a bootleg..

    great post! later.

  • Finger tapping was beeing done Live onstage by musicians for hundreds of years before Eddie was born. Look it up on WIKIPEDIA ie. Tapping. He still kicks ass. But Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top was schooling him before he started playing a guitar. Ed even admits it.

  • @bcinu2 Ed admits there were others who tapped before him which is quite true, but that he personally never saw anybody do it before he started doing it. But NOBODY took tapping to the level that Ed did before. But go ahead and try and minimize Ed's impact if it makes you feel better about yourself. People with half a brain know better.

  • He have'd a pick of destiny xd

  • willy wanka

  • @Scottm43211 he always played you really got me on the destroyer in the first couple of tours

  • i always think at 2:21 someone says you can do it...you can do it haha

this has to be the very best version of eruptuion live in the history of VH. or one of the top 3 easily

  • So this is what a hen being sodomized by a grizzly sounds like.

  • cool stuff. interesting the guitar change at the end for the You Really Got Me. This must have been pre-Floyd Rose days and he knocked the guitar so out of tune it was easier and quicker to change guitars.

  • we all are now pregnant

  • I saw this 'LIVE' in 1978 !!!

    It was AMAZING then,...

    and Still is Today!!!!

  • Fantastic! Dripping with youthfull energy and probably alot of cocaine.

  • 1:45 to 2:15 is just nuts

  • i kno hardcore vh fans will hate this but i wanna say this version is better than the "ultimate" 10 minute 1984 version. its wilder, fresher, more overall trippy.

    sorry 84, this one wins

  • @Ezekialwheel,head up my ass huh? Way to express your opinion...what do I think of that? I think next time you should have someone read the comment to you and explain the context of the material, in a fashion that even someone of your somewhat slow capacity can understand. In other words..apparently you can't read..so when grown ups are talking you should wait til some one can help you before you get into a discussion you can't quite understand, what with all the two syllable words and all..

  • at ezekiel wheel, honestly I think you are entitled to your opinion, but I value your opinion about as much as you value mine...never was putting down evh, just stating opinion...like you...only not without reading first.

  • Maybe Eddie started it in the LA music scene and Randy Rhoads finished it.....

  • THIS CLIP WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITES,..THANK YOU "YOHENDRIX" SAW THEM A-LOT LIVE DURING THAT TIME PERIOD,..WAS ONLY 15. ANYONE REMEMBER, 2 SETS A NIGHT, AT THE WHISKY IN HOLLYWOOD?? LUV THIS VID!!

  • The one person who disliked this video doesn't know what real music is...

  • I dont believe there is anyway Eddie could play like this now.Too many years of partying have caught up with him.Just read the newer article in Rolling Stone Mgzn.Pretty sad what hes become.

  • any more footage from this show?

  • @ezekialwheel I think that I wish I had posted your comment myself....nice work dude.

  • Yeah he probably was into Clapton more than he was Hendrix ...but Hendrix never tuned Claptons guitar for him either...Clapton did tune Jimi's guitar at one of his shows...and he was considered a god don't get me wrong but I was just defending the earlier comment on how EVH was better than Hendrix. I really don't believe that anyone is any better...people have inherently different styles anyway.

  • Eruption and right into You Really Got Me? My sympathy to Black Sabbath for having Van Halen as an opening act on their 1978 tour. Wonder if they fired whoever booked Van Halen to back them up? Not only was Van Halen blowing them off the stage every night - Van Halen would finish their set, and take the hottest backstage groupies back to their hotel while Black Sabbath was stuck onstage playing a show for fans that wanted to hear more Van Halen.

  • I have been playing guitar for 23 years and I can say without hesitation that EVH is on of the most important guitar innovators of the 20th century. You have to understand that this is 1978! I was 7 years old and there was NOBODY who was playing guitar like this before EVH.

  • LETS GET EDDIE, STEVE VAI, JOE SATRIANI, SLASH, TED NUGENT AND PRINCE ALL TOGETHER AND LET THEM JUST JAM OUT. EACH OF THEM IS GREAT AND I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING ALL OF THEM PLAY IN PERSON. QUITAR GODS ALL TOGETHER, THE EARTH SHALL STAND STILL.

  • Jimi Hendrix was a better guitar player but i cry here at abt i minute49.

  • Only idiots compare musicians, music is an art form NOT a sport!

Eddie WAS great and so WAS Hendrix.

  • EVH is t electric guitar what Bruce Lee was t Martial Art....the sheer energy and presence they commanded "LIVE" still remains unparalleled. With all the talent i have seen on youtube not ONE is fit t lick their boots...go figure

  • 3:35 i wish i was the guy that got to take his frankie

  • One more: Ed is great because him and Al stunk together as kids. They are unique because they had each other to bounce crappy ideas and techniques off of and then go from there and develop it into something extraordinary. Try playing some crazy stuff to a drummer who isn't your brother. Odds are the drummer will get ticked off and say you stinkand in 5 minutes you'll be playing a cover. They don't want to put the time into making their own style. They don't want to be judged on their own music.

  • Back in VH's early days if you wanted to see a band you had to go see the live. The artists went all out because they knew nothing was being visually recorded. Now, everybody thinks, "If I look stupid it will show up on Youtube and everyone will judge me." Now kids play it safe. The have to be perfectly dressed and play the "right" cool instrument. Back in the 70's everything was raw and fresh and nobody cared because every performance was a one time deal. Rock wasn't this big huge production.

  • All of today's kids have the physical skills to play fast, but we have no new virtuoso music like this anymore. Any opinions? I think it's because kids don't know the language of music. They read the TAB, but they never study music theory or standard notation or intervals. They can't compose anything other than I-IV-V. The other factor is there is TOO MUCH video of their favorite artists out there. The kids copy the poses but never develop their own character.

  • it seems like anything i listen to from him before 1980 completely blows me away, and i've been listening to van halen for 15 years. unbelievable.

  • watchin this makes me want to break any albums EVH made with Hagar

  • @jonesey5168 Typical Roth fucker. Grow up. Sammy's cool too.

  • That was really cool; man, he was on fire! I like the way he switched guitars for You Really Got Me.

  • Wow -- back when he had good tone. Fuck the new floyd rose bridges.

  • i really think eddie was better in his early years, but he still rules today, just liked his playing more then.

  • Hendrix pushed the sound of guitar way past the boundaries of his time. This is the sound we all know today as "bad-thefuck-ass". Pretty much every good guitar player has this aspect of badass sound that came from Hendrix.

  • frankaboy41 this is the guy from vitomania on my friends account..... i luv v v v v v v v vanhalen!!!! i hate hendrix. u got it mixed up brother!

  • when did he invent spanish fly? exactly when? he's playing it here

  • This is the kind of shit that inspired me to pick up the guitar in 1980. A guy who charted his own path and did his own thing. Nowadays, most players want to be some sweep picking Malmsteen copy, but few even realize that Eddie did more than tapping. HE WAS THE ORIGINAL SHREDDER!!!

  • @Vitomania94 if you like hendrix then go watch hendrix, not van halen and let the people who DO like eddieenjoy this video

  • dude everyone says evh got his shit from that Hippie. FUK NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hes amazing!!! screw hendrix!!!

  • @Vitomania94 Screw you, you fucking cunt..

  • @yohendrix I agree!! Screw Vitoman94!!

Without Jimi there probably would have never been an Eddie!!

  • @ryanspeed

Hendrix was NOT an influence on EVH.

  • @yohendrix hey you know kids read this stuff , how about watching your language.you IDIOT !!!

  • @yohendrix eddie van halen is better than hendrix. well ever was

  • @yohendrix AS IF U fuckin Cunt!!

  • @yohendrix Jimi Hendrix is a great guitarist but he's probably the most overated guitarist in the history of rock n' roll. While he could create new sounds and play well, there are better guitarists. For example Slash, Eddie Van Halen, and, most notably, Jimmy Page.

  • @zoso777able1 lol you lost all credibility at slash. go listen to a full hendrix album, hell go listen to all 3 at full length then come back. the amount of shit he innovated in is astounding and his influence in evident is every single guitarist out there today. just listen to eddie's solo here - so hendrix influenced it's not even funny. slash is an excellent guitarist, but he's had nowhere near the amount of innovation and impact and creativity that hendrix had in the fuckin 60s.

  • @Vitomania94 A large part of Hendrix is the fact that a lot of the equipment that he was using at the time was new.Nobody had ever heard it before,Hendrix was a great guitar player but not near Eddies standards.Eddie didn't only change the way people played guitar but he changed the way people make them.

  • @Vitomania94 amen !!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Vitomania94 , what would EVH say to you for your blasphemy of Hendrix ? If it were not for the innovation of Hendrix there wouldnt be any EVH, or any other rock guitar legends that Hendrix inspired to play the guitar. Ask Eddie who his favorite guitar players were as a child , I will bet my first born that he says Hendrix was in at least his top ten , probably top five , maybe even top three , screw Hendrix? Screw your mother and that homeless guy for ever conceiving your retarted ass.

  • @mightymightythor Actually EVH was waaaay more into Eric Clapton than Jimi Hendrix. When he was growing up he learned every Clapton solo from all the Cream and Blues Breakers albums note for note.

  • @Vitomania94 not sure about screw hendrix....but amazing. remember to respect those that come before us. no hendrix and maybe eddie would have stayed a drummer...

  • @Vitomania94 Screw Hendrix? Are you insane or just tone deaf? All that stuff Ed is doing from 1;26 to 2:14 is completely stolen from Hendrix. Jimi invented what Ed does! I love Ed to but thats a fact!

  • @ALBERTromano1965 Get some facts bro Eddie didn’t have a lick of inspiration from Hendrix... it was all Clapton and if you know anything Hendrix stole from Clapton so seriously stfu

  • @AssassinSteven Your a douchebag to think you can educate me about Van Halen. I own 25 of Eds personal guitars. Worth more than the house your mama lives in, and have alot of respect for Ed, So go fuck yourself! Hendrix was the 1st. Yes Van Halen says he was influenced by Clapton. But Clapton doesnt get feedback and all that stuff. Ed didnt live in a bubble. He heard jimi and stole his shit from him. Go to hell Steven. You need a beating! Go back in your fucking hole and die you dumb scumbag!

  • @ALBERTromano1965 While i agree with you, somewhat. 1 ed guitar is Cool as hell. 25 is hella cool but to ed, those are just old tools.

  • @ALBERTromano1965 To say Ed "stole his shit" from Hendrix is one of the most assinine things I've ever read. But then again, with all the cursing babble in your post, I shouldnt expect a lot of intelligence. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and just assume you were drunk or high when you wrote it.

  • @ALBERTromano1965 Lmfao !! 25 of his guitars?! Bro STFU. He also kind of lived in a Bubble he said so in an interview. Eddie said in that Rolling Stone magainze with him and BB King and all them on the cover that the only album he ever bought was Cream and that was the only band he listened to. Then he said after... I'm not trying to be a prick but thats just who I liked. SO STFU and do some research before coming on here and starting with Eddies biggest fucken fan

  • This still after 30+ year's still makes me shut up and just listen, nobody had even thought on the same page as Eddie at this time. And all the neoclassical fans This was a big year for 2 of that genre's originators, Alex Lifeson and Uli Jon Roth did some great work with the bands they played with too in 78'.

  • Nobody played the guitar like this before he did. A true innovator.

  • I'll bet in the 1978,

Eddie was the fastest and the most technical guitar player in the world, and at this concert, it probably struck people speechless to see what he was doing with his instrument.

Seeing him tap out patterns the way he was doing, seeing how fast he has picking in the patterns, and the things he did with pinch harmonics and screams.

He will forever be known as the guitarist who introduced a style no one had ever even thought of

  • @9erMatthew and Eddy Swass aint no slouch either buddy. If you aint down with Eddy Swass then you must really enjoy sniffing Sweddy Ass! Dig it?

  • Eddie was (and is) awesome, but not the fastest or most technically gifted, nor the only game in town, then or now. He did his thing and is part of rock history because of it; I'll always be a fan, but there are a lot of greats. Shawn Lane was playing things at the time which still are untouchable-just never gained great fame for it, but could play circles around everyone then or now-and super musical phrasing-unreal-you should search his name-blow your mind-I'm sure Ed knows who he is.

  • @9erMatthew

You have that ...I saw him around this time in his prime. I'm a guitarist and was 13-14 at this time and you can imagine where my jaw was. .......Eddie will always be one of the greatest imo

  • @nighthawk584

    Absolutly! Luck kid you

  • when eddie dies he is going to rock the fuck out of heaven!

  • @guitarfreak1363 lets hope that day doesn't come for a long long time

  • noodle noodle noodle wank wank wank diddle diddle diddle

  • Emotion? Who knows what Eddie was thinking/feeling when he wrote this? Maybe it's just too deep for you to comprehend.

  • You might ask the same question about a Charlie Parker solo. "Is there an emotion in this?" Well, define emotion. This music makes millions of people happy when they hear it. I still get chills from it. And no, I can't define what specific emotions I feel during this piece of music. It's something beyond emotions. It's something like AWE! It's the same feeling I get when I'm In an electrical storm. It's magnificent to hear because it is a shifting, current of feeling. Not for everyone, I guess.

  • Good statement-and people did have that reaction to Bird's playing at the time-it was too crazy for a lot of the swing crowd to deal with. I wouldn't compare them as players but it is interesting to see how lots of people react to innovation, whether it's bop or rock.

  • Eddie rules !

  • no guitar player is better than the other its just that they have different styles..so why dont we all shut the fuck up and watch the vid...

  • i dont agreee eddie is god..... but hahaha nice! XD

  • i mean that eddie IS god

  • @enyeny7077 actually thats a Very inaccurate statement you just made. like ANYTHING else in the world there are some better than others. there are guitarists who can play things better than the originators. there are some who are better at coming up with there own. thats why most guitarist living today have unifiedly said John petrucci is probly the best of the last 30 years of guitarist because he compses his own stuff along with playing others better than the originals :P

  • @atekido well i dint ask you for you comment kido..

  • @enyeny7077 using that logic, michael romeo of symphony x is not better than a 9 year old who'd just been playing for 1 month?

  • @enyeny7077 my words man congratulations one woke up and tell all fools do not compare guitar players i dont need to say anything else.you did it for me RIGHT buddy rock on EDDIE

  • This guy definately took rock guitar playing a level above Hendrix. Instead of just copying he innovated it!

  • Eddie is the king of rock and rock guitar.

  • say what you will but he's the dude that was the god father of this style.

As for black sabbath , trust me when lites came on with them on stage they did just fine.

  • Uhh, Sabbath didn't do just fine! Why do you think VH was kicked off the tour?! Eddie and the boys BLEW Sabbath off the stage EVERY night! Sabbath were the kings of heavy metal up to that point, and VH comes along and just pissed all over them. The press and reviews at every show confirmed this. Ozzy has even said that VH was a huge reason he left Sabbath to go solo. This video just shows the fire Eddie, and VH had ... no band before them put on a stage show like VH

  • true! also, when they were playing sunset strip gigs and opening for gerge lynch's old band, The Boyz, george just hoped that they didnt suck and drive their crown away. Turns out that the face of guitar and the very way its played changed before his eyes.

  • ozzy didnt leave sabbath. he was kicked out because of his alcohol problems

  • kinda hard for black sabbath to hit the stage after that opening act.......that kid could play

  • i was bored....anyway, it doesn't matter what I say .

  • Michael schenker and EVH are by far the BEST

  • early VH was there best

  • Comment removed

  • Eddie should be number 2. he and hendrix changed the face of guitar playing forever. the other guys are great but those 2 were pioneers.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm from italy so if i make some error... :)

I like it but... i don't think schenker should stay above van halen... eddie also imprved some solos :) but you must put in your list the guitarist of the allman brothers band i think than you list it's really good :)

  • Alright, how fucking awesome would it have been to have been young and Eddie Van Halen?

    Sheesh.

  • this is van halen's 1978 world tour.

eddie van halen shits all over jimi hendrix

  • haha, erm.. no..

  • hahahehe oh yes he does

  • on par, in my opinion

  • cool!

  • @stratdem There has never been any doubt in my mind!!! this guy is from outer space!!!!!!!

  • EVH is awesome but he has nothing on Hendrix, come on now lets remember the basics

  • Jimi presented the basics......

Eddie took those basics and made a hells guitar playing book of blazing speed and the intensity of a reinvented tapping technique.

Jimi could never out guitar Eddie.

  • Sure pal.

  • a BIG AMEN! Trooperx0. i love jimi hendrix but the reality is edward van halen would and could bury hendrix so far under the stage it would take 6 months just to come close to finding him. 32 years ago eddie van halen took the guitar into the end of space and time and now 32 years later eddie van halen continues to do so. hendrix could NEVER! out play or out do what KING EDWARD VAN HALEN ! has done and continues to do. he is the alltime GREAT!

  • i saw this world tour at the philadelphia spectrum back in 1978 and i knew right then edward van halen was KING! BEST GUITARIST AND MOST VALUBLE PLAYER FROM 1978 TO 1998 no other guitarist in history even comes close to this run. and also some years back edward van halen along with jimi hendrix were voted the two most influental guitarist of alltime! by guitar player international/guitar world and guitar.

  • EVH is good, but not the most valuable between 78 and 98. what about randy rhoads, michael schenker, paul gilbert, joe satriani, steve vai, ect, ect.

  • @leicheterrorzone

    RANDY FUCKING RHOADS, dude!

  • very well put!

  • wonder,he must have split the signal from the pedal board maybe? as when he swaped gats the one placed against the stack was still feeding back and having the tremelo effect or whatever still going as he was already starting the riff to ya realy got me.

  • voisy le precurser de tou lé guitare heros ke lon pe voire en se momen!!! EDDIE!!! té le plu gran!!!!!!!!

  • the color sux, but luckily i can see his fingers moving. Enough to say he still got it :D

  • "the color sux"? did you know that what you are talking about is a tape recording of a high school gig that's been filmed 30 years ago? sure color sux.. be happy that it's there at all... you kids need a class on 20'th century... I sure would like to see this in HD widescreen, but it's just not gonna happen... :D

  • fact: the color does suck.

We all know that the cameras wherent good back then, k?

    kthxbai.

  • you tell him lol.. this video badass

  • your a fucking fag you fat cunt twat fu.....LLEVH (Long Live Eddie Van Halen)

  • EVH taught the guitar to run, but hendrix taught the guitar to talk . . . or was that peter frampton? lol

  • This must have freaked the shit out of people then lol

  • what would rock have become without Eddie Van Halen and Eruption?

  • hendrix is god

  • greatest guitarist who ever lived

  • Dude, you're so right.

  • He's still living, isn't he?

  • who is still living?

  • this is why eddie van halen was, and still is the greatest guitarist of all time

  • and in a instant, hundreds of thousands of people became fans of eddie.

  • That was SICK!

  • On the first night, I bet Sabbath was thinking, "OH SHIT...Who hired these fucking guys?"

  • Ozzy has even said that Van Halen blew them off the stage every night.

  • people bak then must have thought that was some alien with a guitar it was just so ahead of its time

  • spanish fly?

  • man thats priceless, killer fu**ing tone so meaty

  • you can totally hear previews of "spanish fly" in the beginning

  • Think of the reaction people had to this haha

  • it's not 1948

  • when it comes to guitar playing at the time is might as well been 1948. Eddie took everything and turned it up 10 notches with a sound that was brand new.

  • Jimi Hendrix Did that first, he turned it all up to 11

  • Jmi Hendrix formed a new wave of guitarist as did EVH,but both went different directions.EVH reinvented the shred while Jmi Hendrix showed people what the guita was capable of doin.

All in all, both are one of the greatest guitarists in the world!

  • Fucking Brilliant. You watch this clip and it's almost easy to forget that EVH's rhythm playing and riff work are every bit as impressive as his soloing. There's only a handful of players of this caliber of whom I can make that claim.

  • Yes! Well said.

  • what fucken days those were!

  • does anyone have the complete show ? I would pay good money for this on DVD. I can't believe that Ed or David wouldn't have something live that they could release professionally.

  • shredder vs Soul???????? What an asshole.

  • I think cocaine had more of an influnece, in this clip.

    Vs clapton or hendrix

    peace out niggas

  • Yeah clapton was his main influence he said that he knows claptons every solo note for note

  • Best Rock Band ever. Today there's only shit!

  • Ed comes from his own place ...

  • Also he got alot of stuff from Ritchie Blackmore, melodic minor and such as well as the crazy stuff.

  • hendrix was no influence to van halen!!! are u kidding? opposite way of playing... shredder vs soul...
