Superman wasn't fast enough to stop both missiles in time, yet he was fast enough to circle the Earth over and over in a matter of seconds... enough to be able to reversve the rotation of the earth and turn back time. I guess he just wasn't motivated enough, until his girl got killed! The anger and devastation must have given him speed!
