  • BAG FED!

  • you are so awesome thank you for doing this =) <3

  • And how to do D#?

  • just kept replaying 4:30!!

  • he always wears his priest suit

  • Thank you so much for these lessons!! This is way more difficult than lesson 1, but after about an hour of practice, I got the hang of it. Can't wait to get on to the next lessons!!

  • The high kings sing this song. I think they call it raglan road. it's the best version i've ever heard sung.

  • I know you have a lesson on breathing. But it is still difficult for me. I'm VERY new so I'm going that it will just 'click' with practice, but I fin myself with air still in my lungs and yet wanting to blow it out and suck I'm fresh air. Instead of just taking a mini breath as you talk about. Any advice?

  • well, you certainly are a good teacher, but some of the lesson frustrated me because I have experience with other musical instruments, but you really did help me out. Kudos 2 u dude! ;)

  • well thanks to you ryan i have abit less money but a tin whistle :P lesson one were easy ^^ but now it is geting kinda tricky since its night here and i got a sleeping family xD

  • (In my book it's in the key of G, warning, more high notes)

    In the key of G:

(If there is no space between two notes it is played as a pair of eights or "tee-tee's", if there is they are quarter notes and --- indicates a dotted half note [three beats[ and A-B indicates a dotted quarter note followed by an eight. g is low G and G is high G)

    gA B B B AB D D E DB g BA g g g---

    D E-D E G B-A g B D B G B A---

    D E-D E G B-A g B D B G B A---

    gA B B B AB D D E DB g BA g g g

  • Im having a hard time making the High C sound. I end up squeeking. Advice?

  • @ShadowGurl9231 Most advise that you take your time to practice going from low D to high D so you can learn how much air you need to blow for a low D as opposed to high D and be able to do it fluidly.

  • someone know the song title?

  • @guizzo3 The Dawning of the Day

  • 10 minutes a night? 15?

When I first started, I only played on thursdays and fridays, but 90 minutes each time. The idea is to not give up in the middle of something, but continue until you have it, then take a break.

As you progress on the whistle, you'll notice that 1) tonguing isn't necessary. breath control is sufficient. 2) you don't -have- to use the pads of your fingers. I quite often use the middle part of my fingers, unless I'm showing the students how to play something.

  • I felt god

  • Thank you fader. I'm not katolic or baptishe. But you inspires mé.

    Kindly reguerds from Denmark

  • Hay Ryan Ive started learning with your vids and was wondering also what irish whistle book you would recomend for starting out? would really appreciate it thanks

  • Thats a piece from 'on raglan road'...

  • Oh! it's a O'Riordan Whistle.... Where can I buy it? Ebay.com or Amazon? I'm from Philippines.

  • Mr. Ryan, may I ask what is the name/ brand of tin whistle you have used on this video? It seems very easy to play having a ver nice tune.

  • My greatest difficulty still, after many weeks is covering the holes properly - it's driving me crazy.

  • @ljotulf I had difficulty with this for a long time. In fact its quite simple, the best advice i can give is to watch proficient players play and see what position of the finger covers the holes. Good luck :-) .

  • Thank you so much for making these wonderful videos! My whistle and I were feeling a little lost without some instruction. These lessons have helped a immensely :)

  • sorry for the triple post earlier, my computer was acting up.

  • Thanks for the lessons, they're very helpful. I understand that it takes hard work and practice to play an instrument but i think prayer should be sincere rather than memorised repetition. Thanks though, and may God bless you.

  • @ElvenIvy7VIISeven lol, thats a random statement, thanks for the lessons but prayer shouldn't have any repetition... Whats your aim at?

  • @Rawmundo he mentioned prayer in the video...

  • Did you mute the volume when you said "a hole" lol? I know you're a priest and all, but come on man, we know you're not being vulgar lol. Although it is funny.

  • What is he playing?

I am trying to learn tin whistle i am doing merry christamas in my school play.

  • 1:49 for a few seconds before the tune.

  • 1:52 starts the tune. (slow)

  • dunno whats the problem with getting the notes by watching...

    this tutorial is great!

  • great tutorials

  • That's such a pretty whistle...

  • Could you give us some specifics for breathing? I seem to run out of air, not sure when the right time to take a breath. Or does it eventually become intuitive?

    Thanks.

  • love what your doing, im doing lessons at the moment but find your lessons easier :)

  • omg, i mis-click. I think other "8 dislike" did it too

  • 1:52 can any one make a slomotion vid from there on plz?

  • god bless you for teaching everyone...

  • i love you man!!!!!! yer a very clear and patient teacher! i bought a tin whistle down the bogside a couple of months ago and just kinda taught myself but its good to go back to the basics. btw i dissagre with yer dawning of the day shite! its raglan road!!!! ha ha ha.

  • @theodge

    you are a cretin.

  • I would just like to say thanks for these videos! I have nothing to do with Fordham University, but I am trying to learn to play the tin whistle. I just received mine in the mail today, along with a book with diferent songs and a CD. But these videos really explain how to actually hold the whistle right, and covering all the holse and such. Thanks again! :)

  • could anyone write me the notes for the tune?

  • @marca555

Youtube hates my typing in the letters for some unknown reason and just says "error, try again", but if I just give the key for you guys, you could translate them yourself, it's really easy.

    6=D, 5=E, 4=F, 3=G, 2=A, 1=B and 0/5 = high D (D+)

  • Comment removed

  • @GreenNene

But if you're just after the notesheet, you'll find it on the guys website, the one in the description.

There are lots of musicsheets ther you can choose from.

  • If anyone want the notes here they are; (according to my irish whistle book) (number of holes closed, numbers with no spaces between them should be slided into eachother, 0/5 is a high D, all F's and C's are sharp, so no halfholes)

    65 4 4 4 54 2 2 1 24 6 5 6 6 6 2

    1 2 1 0/5 4 5 6 4 2 4 0/5 4 5 2

    1 2 1 0/5 4 5 6 4 2 4 0/5 4 5 65

    4 4 4 54 2 2 1 24 6 5 6 6 6

If anyone want the notes in letters instead, let me know and I'll translate them.

  • @GreenNene yis pluz

  • @baselmes

Apparently youtube won't let me post it, it just says "error - try again"

So I guessI'll try again later.

  • @GreenNene

oh I d love to get the transript of notes in the letters, thanx

  • @GreenNene thanks for this notation it is a real help please keep them comming as I have not yet looked at the other lessons I dont know if you have but please do and thankyou again.

  • @GreenNene

Thank you for posting it is very usefull but you made a little mistake, second and third lines : it is not 0/5 4 5 6 4 2 4 0/5

    But : 0/5 4 5 6 4 3 2 4 0/5 each line

    Try it !

  • @bretteur2legende

Perfect! Great that people are willing to help with correcting mistakes. Now we all got the right notes =)

  • @GreenNene Hey thanks, this was most helpful. Do you know of any other place I can find notes to Irish music written out like this? If you do, would you email me a link: standingbabas@yahoo.com Thanks a million!

  • @GreenNene

    I think you're missing a note... maybe I'm wrong but it sounded off and i think because of skipping the G note. 4 3 2 4 as opposed to 4 2 4

    1 2 1 0/5 4 5 6 4 3 2 4 0/5 4 5 2

  • @GreenNene I'd love to have these in letter form!

  • @jjwoll

Hi! For some unknown reason youtube keeps flagging posting the notes in letters as spam and so I can't help you there, but there is a "translation" between numbers and letters in a previos reply that you could use.

    Good luck!

  • @GreenNene I'd love to have these in letter form!

  • @GreenNene wow thanks for the numbers,,,i was playing along with ease ,,,thx

  • @roycregan

    Cool, thanks!

  • @GreenNene hey thanks thats alot of help do u have any other songs u can write out like that? im still gettin gto know the notes

  • @GreenNene hey thanks thats alot of help do u have any other songs u can write out like that? im still getting to know the notes

  • @GreenNene can u do it 4 me to plaese?

  • Here's the letters, where the lowercase "d" is a high D. I added the G in the 4th & 6th lines because that's how he plays it in the video. :)

    DE F F F EF A A B

    AF D E D DD

    A B A B d F E D

    FG A F d F E

    A B A B d F E D

    FG A F d F E

    DE F F F EF A A B

    AF D E D DD

  • @PlaidJaguar Thank you that helps- no WAY could I keep up with him...what is the name of this tune, BTW, does anyone know?

  • @north021884 "The Dawning of the Day" He says it at the very beginning of the vid, but it's easy to miss.

  • @PlaidJaguar Thanks so much, I did miss that... I've just started and my biggest problem so far is keeping from going into upper registers. Any suggestions for a newbie? My years long ago of playing the clarinet are coming back to me - not sure if that is helping or hurting...

  • @GreenNene thank you so much for doing the effort and doing this !!! IT really helped because In the video its hard to fully understand the notes as a total noobie tone deaf person I am :(

  • @GreenNene I would like the notes in letters to :-)

  • are you a priest?

  • what's the name of this tune?

  • Thanks, Father, I actually learned this tune just from watching this

  • Thank You for theese movies, They are very helpfull ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Great lessons, I'm picking this up pretty quickly. I've jotted down the note order by watching you play and pausing the video. Thank you, it is really helpful :)

  • this is very helpful

  • begins 1:53

  • Great Video! I have managed to play along and followed through after several tries:)

  • I would insert lesson 1.5 right here - practice the pentatonic scale first if you are having trouble with this tune (it is a lot of notes to remember).

The pentatonic scale are the notes: 1,2,3,5,6 or D,E,F#,A,B and the octave D if you are feeling brave.

Get comfortable moving between these notes and you will be able to pick up any of these songs easier since they are all based on that scale.

Great videos though. I look forward to watching all of them.

  • this is a lot harder than lesson one lol... i tried and failed lol

  • Loving it! took delivery of my Generation whistle as recommended and am just about getting this tune. Thank you Father Ryan.

  • what happened to slowing it down the second time??? dang..... i feel stupid because i just cant seem to get it right.

  • @boomerhipple i think it's a Clarke.

  • you are awesome.

  • I find these lessons a great way to learn and really appreciate the help. Is there any way you could show the note order as there being played.

  • I find a really good method for learning this song as a beginner (if you can't follow his hand movements) is to look at the sheet music and draw down a circle for every hole you have to cover until you form series of little towers. I don't know if you follow me but it really helped me follow the sheet music.

  • @xenos60 Also, pausing it and moving the cursor to follow the hand movement in slomo helps as well...

  • Ahhha! I got it on the fourth time around. Just who is the genius here? Joking aside though; brilliant lessons.

  • I lesson one he suggest getting a Generation whistle in D, but what he is playing in the video does not look like my Generation.

  • Does anyone know what whistle he has got? please reply cause i need to buy one, and i need a decent one, cheers Bron :)

  • thanks ryan i aprecciate your videos :)

i am waiting for my clarke original whistle key D to arrive by Air Mail

  • You are really, but really a awesome teacher,(i hope you know tath)I can really say you are the best music teacher i ever had...

  • Hello there. First of all, thank you very much for these lessons. I got a question, instead of "tonguing" I use my throat to separate the notes, if I use my tongue a bit of saliva gets into the whistle. Should I start using my tongue instead of my throat to avoid wrong habits or using the throat is another technique? Best regards and ty again

  • can you please post the note order in the discription, i can't seem to get it

  • ive been trying to learn the whistle on and off for about three weeks now but only now that i have looked at learning from you that i have noticed that i play with my right hand at the top. its become habit to place my fingers over the holes without thinking. (i just did the scales without blowing) and now it feels really oddto have my hands the other way round. does it really matter? i would like to keep my right hand at the top. it just feels right.

  • Hwllo!! Well, I bought my tin whistle today, and your lessons are amazing. I pais just 3 euros for mine, but it seems to be quite good! =)

  • I really wish this was taped sideways on I really can't keep up cause I've never heard the song before and it's a huge step upfrom mary had a little lamb in the first lesson. I feel so dumb cause you make it look so easy but it's not.

  • Don't worry, I thought the same thing at first, but the song is quite easy when you practice it enough, and the simplicity of it makes it beautiful. Keep going! :D

  • @leconfidant I'm still having trouble with 'Mary had a little lamb'!

  • Ur so good at explaining things, thank you:)

  • Thank a lot for your lesson. I begin to day and hope arriving to play some traditionnal irish melodies. I live in Bretagne (Brest) and I'm very fond of irish music.

  • It's very nice-design tin whistle! and sounds very good. What mark is it?

  • Dude, I got an Irish Whistle today and I'm going to week three already! And I've never played a thing like this before until today!

  • Hello! Thank you very much for your lessons. I'm from Barcelona and nobody here gives

classes. I start with a low whistle. Thanks again!

  • what whistle is that it looks beautiful ...??

  • this video lesson is very helpful. Thanks very much

  • Ok, most retarded question ever. I just went to Ireland and bought a tin whistle in a souvenier shop. It's one of the Guinness $15 ones. Obviously its not the best, but is it ok to learn on?

  • yes, for sure, as long as it's a D tuned whistle!

so you can follow most lessons on the net :)

  • I'm enjoying learning the tin whistle along with my kids!

  • mine sounds very high compared to his i think i'm blowing into it worng

  • gigity

  • Great stuff.

  • I remember this tune... On Raglan Road was set to it. What's it called, I didn't catch it?

  • Oh, the dawning of the day.

Thanks, these lessons are great, I'm finally getting it. At first I almost gave up due to my whistle sounding defective. Turns out the whipple just needed a shave, and I better fingering practices.

    All the best,

    Ian

  • Also, I learned this song as a child in Irish. It's called "Fáinne Geal an Lae"

  • Thanks for this :) I suprisingly never learned the tin whistle, although we had the option to in school.

  • can you put the notes up for this song? and these are great videos

  • Try playing by ear, and looking closely at his fingers when you can't. Trust me, It's a lot easier than it sounds. :)

  • I'm confused.

I bought a "MEG by Clarke's" today, and there was a instruction book and a CD with it. On the book it says "PENNYWHISLTE For Beginners".

The flute is metal, probaly tin - So have i bought a Tinwhistle or a pennywhistle? or is it the same? I would appreciate a awnser - Thanks for the lessons, they're nice

  • I believe they are the same thing. Can be called by either name.

  • Alright, thank you very much sir.

  • They can be called a Tin Whistle, Pennywhistle, Irish Whistle. Many names for the instrument.

  • Penny whistles and tin whistle are the same thing man.

  • they are called both. tin whistle coz well its made out of tin or penny whistle coz in the 1800s people would play them on the streets and would get a penny for playing. they are the same i have a clarkes one too and they call it a penny whistle but they are the same!

  • they are usualy the same. they are called a penny whistle because aeons ago you really could pick up a basic one or even make one really cheaply. tin whistle and penny whistle are the same even if its not tin , it will be the same thing with a different tone.

i have only had them about 2 days but can tell you that much hope it helped . matt

  • Thank you so much for these great videos

on learning the tin whistle. You are a gifted teacher. I have a clark celtic tin whistle and find that the high notes are whispy sounding compared to the low notes. Is this because of the quality of the whistle ($10.00)? Perhaps I need a better whistle but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars. Would you please recommend a whistle that would be affordable and for the beginner?

Thanks again for the wonderful lessons.

    Cheers

    Linda

  • if your still looking a i have just got a Clarke meg in D its great and was only £4.50

  • Its been 3 months so I'm sure someone's mentioned this to you already. From all I've read, most whistlers tend to like the cheaper ones better. Say they have a better sound.

I paid $25 for mine at a recent Renn Fair and my high notes do tend to be.. not so great but I think thats just a matter of learning to not use so much pressure when playing.

    Hope some of this helped!

  • please italian subtitles!!

  • I'm really enjoying the week by week lessons. I find you to be a good teacher and easy to learn from. So thank you, I appreciate the time you take to put these videos on here.

  • i really want to pla the tin whistle i have never playd a instrument before what key is your whistle and what key is good for a beginer......

  • Where have I heard this tune before...? It reminds me of Lord of the Rings.. Hm..

  • It's Loreena McKennitt and the song is called Raglan Road.

    Listen to this:

    watch?v=-2d5ez709cg

    :-)

  • Really nice! Thanks :]

  • thank you so much for these videos father. As a rock guitarist who has taken a liking to irish and celtic music, these lessons are a gold mine helping me learn to play tin whistle. Thank you, and God bless you father.

  • For some fun, do a search here on YouTube for "William Bloat - Tommy Makem", it's a black humor song sung to this tune. =)

  • Is there a book I should have to follow along with these lessons?

  • If you go to his blog site and look in the 2007 stuff you will see the sheet music.

  • Thank you so much! I've been a classical flute player all my life (while playing the Irish flute every now and then). I just started learning the whistle and I've found your lessons very helpful! Thanks again.

  • Thanks. You have a great way of teaching.

  • What a goldmine!! Thank you so very much, Father Duns, for your generosity in sharing these videos.

  • I am from Ireland now living in Aus. and I learn't the Dawning ofthe Day through Gaelic I am trying to convert the notes over to the d scale and it's fustrating.IIt's hard trying to write them down from the lessons.Any advice

    Regards Juls

  • i may be wrong but sounds like raglan road by luke kelly

  • I agree that its Raglan Road.

  • yeah glad that someone agrees

  • Many Irish tunes traffic under various names.

  • i know what u mean. its like that polka that you did for week 3 i think

  • i just picked up a tin whistle last week for the first time and these lessons have been an invaluable asset to my practice though i am struggling to keep up with your fingering this lesson that is expected i suppose in any case thank you father duns you are quite the amazing teacher but no less should be expected from a jesuit at forham, truly being a persoon for others

  • I was tought the whistle when i was younger but have gone out of practice. This was real good and helpful. Thanks. And Happy St. Patricks day to you.

  • Just bought a tin whistle, played saxophone when I was younger so the notes are still in the head. :) But what is this song that you are playing? I swear I heard it before.

  • What this tin whistle's brand??

  • Why, ive been with my tin whistle now for about 30 min.

Been whatching you for about 10 min.

I all ready know the beginning of lord of the rings theme (I play violin).

However, your tutorials are way after awesome. Please continue! :D

  • the D note keeps on getting me :(

  • does it matter if your right hand is above your left because i find it more comfortable and i play just fine

  • loool it matters as mush as using the fork in the right hand the knife on the left xD

  • HI Ryan Thanks so much for posting your tutorials I live in Mexico and no one here knows what a tin whistle is I got it in Canada but I just started practicing but your tutorials are awesome!!!

  • probably you didn't ask to the right persons. I'm from México too! But ok, it might by true that most of the people don't know the instrument by it's name, probably just by its sound.

  • hello krannz... i am mexican too and i know what a tin whistle is.. hahaha.. i am a musician and fan of ethnic music. :) anyway, i thought i'd write..... te mando un saludo. yo acabo de estar en irlanda y me compre' un tin whistle y pienso volver por un bodhran. estoy de vacaciones en italia... anyway, espero saber de ti. :) ciao

  • When it is supposed to be playing slow, I find it way too fast to try and practice, especially the second line. Its very hard to see which fingers are being used. Could it be done even slower?

  • what's the song name? i can't understand the notes only waching him! please help me! how can you di this?

  • He has the music sheets on his blog, go to the website he put under the description. You'll find it under 2007 stuff.

  • Dawing of the day...An actually Raglan Road uses the same air.

  • will guitar players learn faster on the tin whistle?

  • It depends how advanced you are. If you've trained yourself to learn songs by ear, yes.

Also, better hand-eye coordination will help as well.

  • that first tune he called in incorrectly its name is William bloat

  • It is fate.. i saw the 1st lesson and thought "there is an old tarnished tin whistle on the shelf"--I went and got it and lo and behold-- a "D" she was...

and ive started learning an instrument at 27. Great. Thanks. This thing's just a cheap looking brass with green plastic moutpiece. It says it is made by Feadog Teo, Ireland.

anyway thanks for these easy to follow lessons... im going to make a new years resoloution to be able to play my family a tune on christmas day next year.

    thanks again

  • THIS INSTRUMENT WAS USED IN

My Heart Will Go On celine dion

you know the beging solo!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

  • i'm new to the tin whistle and these videos are extemely helpful!

    thank you!

Also, i'm just curious, what whistle are you playing in this video?

  • Hi (again)

I am really enjoying your tutorials. I have only just discovered you. would you be able to send me your weekly tutorials. how much does it cost and what type of whistles will I need (including the one your play with this tune). am hearing impaired and i can hear note through my teeth, I hope ou understand this.

    Very best wishes

    Norman McLaren

  • How i can sing the notes with #
