This is great, but I agree with some of the comments, the lead synth sound at the intro is not good enough out of the Motif, thats why I play it with both the Motif and an Access Virus TI, it sounds like the real thing. Otherwise, great job!
sorry man, the yamaha motif is just not good enough for the lead synth. its too cold and sounds not realistic. i prefer a kurzweil more than this thing
@mikak3607 this motif alot of very good and famous artists use it on stage...its not for nothing^^ just have to take time to do your right settings and it will sound good
@mikak3607 It is not the Motif. It is the voice that has not been dialed in properly to match that used in the song. The Motif could get much closer though just how close has yet to be demonstrated. I have heard Kurzweil K2000 series missing the mark as well. Jon Carin actually improved on Richard Wright's voices so it is a matter of fine tuning.
geniale.. mi arriva oggi la motif xs 7.. sentire questa cover suonata completamente con la motif mi fa apprezzare ancora di più l'acquisto che sto per fare..:) grande.. bravissimo
Guys, this is not meant to be a BAND - quit being idiots! He's showing you how the song would sound played all on the motif - it's AWESOME - and the parts originally for the organ and synth lead are RIGHT ON and PLAYED right on! I've owned the Korg M1 and An1x, great boards, but I have hever heard the groovy Floyd synth moog type lead on ANY keyboard except this. Check out his other stuff - killer house /hip hop leads and chops, groovy funk synth, and killer hammond!!!! Guys enjoy the music!
Man,thanks a lot for taking all the time to do this video,it was so fun,and it is respectful to the Floyd, please, can you tell me wich presets did you use (the pad at the intro is just great)
Dude, you take too long to get going. The intro is putting me in a coma. I would have liked to hear a better choice of song. That really show off the capability of the great Motif xs.
What key or chord are you holding for the beginning sound? Just before you start playing on the video?..... Good Job btw and thanks for posting in such close up that beginner Piano players like me can learn from it.
I really like your whole orchestration and rendition of it. You play very contemplatively. And your voice ain't really that bad for a guy screwing around in hi living room or whatever. But the fact is...I really HATE your synthesizer! I would never buy one of those Motifs. :-)
People always do this differently to the original. The original (on wywh) is a simple Gm triad in hammond organ (or some other kind of mellow sounding chordal thingy) and one moving note in the strings pad. I Think Rick started to do a full sounding string section from DSOT onwards
The string pad isn't bad at all, but the horn lead is ridiculous. The filter opening... The guitar shows too much itself so that it sounds like a variety tune. Can be enhanced quickly with minor adjustements.
I look for this organ/string sound in the intro on my XS but.... I cannot find him. please can you say me which sound this is? is it a preset or a user sound?
Sorry but i have the data list from the S90 here but there are only 3 Preset banks not 4. And on the Motif XS there is no Preset with the Name "Shine ON" not in the voices and not in the performances.
When I did this video I used different sounds - I think I used the Medium large section PRE 4 A15 for the strings, and Progressy PRE 1 F12 for the organ. I could be wrong , because I made the video a long time ago and can't remember the sounds I used ! The synth sound is Feeling PRE 5 D02. I might have also used underlying synth strings as well - hope this helps - There is definitely no patch called Shine On on the Motif XS presets
Twas good. I gotta ask you somthin though. How the hell do you do the swirly thing on the organ. whenever i try it it sounds awful. I really wanna know how to d it. if you cold explain it to me i would be extreemly grateful. thanks. Dave
the swirly thing? haha - what do you mean exactly? do you mean the leslie speaker effect? or when you go all up the keyboard hitting every key? The best way to do the second thing is to keep your foot on the sustain pedal (for an organ sound) and then release it at the point where you get to the intended note / chord. And don't do it too slowly or it will sound pretty bad. If you mean the leslie speaker effect then it's best to take the leslie completely or nearly off just before adding it
i have a leslie effect. i mean the second one. rick wright always does it. the thing where you go up and down then stop on a note whenever i do it., even usin the pedal al the notes just mix and its horrible. does it have to be one kind of organ sound? i have no idea how to do it haha.
no it has nothing to do with the decay, because there is no decay on this organ sound - try doing it with a bit of distortion when you do it - that should mask any cheesy organ sounding notes - apart from that i don't know - and do it with your thumb not your finger (although that shoudn't really matter it means your hitting 2 or 3 notes at the same time as opposed to one at a time)
too bad the video was out of sync but I've had that problem too. anywho, this is a really cool thing you've done with the motif. great job, I'll bet this was a fun project!!
yeah i know - i recorded the sound through the computer and tried to match it up with the digital camera - it was ok until i unloaded it up to youtube, when it went slightly out of sync
Actually you're right - I am kind of telling the truth - what happened was I recorded the song from scratch, and then went back and did the video with my keyboard on mute to try and recreate the notes - so that's why it's out of sync - coz sometimes i got it wrong ! and also it didn't sync exactly - but it is me i swear !

There is a preset appropriately titled "Shine On".

Where can i find this USR1/2/3 or Preset 1 to 6?

It's PRE4 D12 on my S90ES, but it's probably different on the XS. You can find it under "Synth Pad / Choir" if you browse by categories.

thank you for the answer but the presets are so not correct, but its now not a problem for me.
I have edit a voice with an church organ and string sound and now its playing good.
The original sound from this pad can you find by the "Quasimidi Quasar" and the sound calls itself there "Shine ON".
sorry for my english...this is not so good. I can speak better than germany ;-)
