Shut the fuck up. I bet 70% of you have never even read Greek Mythology.
And if you have, you probably wouldn't be complaining about it, because you should be watching this for entertainment. I love Greek Mythology, and I wish I could have been there to hear the stores. But I wasn't, so I come here to see them, NOT CRITICIZE THEM. Don't like bald achilles?
Shut the fuck up, and go watch your precious Achilles with hair. God
In ancient Greece, long male hair was a symbol of wealth and power, while a shaven head was appropriate for a slave. The ancient Greeks had several Gods and heroes who wore their hair long, including Zeus, Achilles, Apollo, and Poseidon. Greek soldiers are said to have worn their hair long in battle. Such warriors considered it a sign of aristocracy and are said to have combed it openly in order to show off.(quote from wiki-long hair-classical period), the whole hairstyling is WRONG!
the greeks started cutting their hair after 600 BC, especially the front as it was easier to get caught by the enemy, or wear it pony style, it was Alexander The Great around 330 BC who ordered all his army to cut their hair to minimise losses, from such an unworthy death- to die in battle, cause someone grabbed you by the hair, was not considered an act of 'smartness'....we can see long hair on greek statues and frescoes on men around the time of Helen of Troy...and up to the Romans.
Why did they have to make Achilles so ugly? And sorry but that Helen is not that hot. They could of cast so many other woman to play the part that would blow her away in looks.
its funny what Odysseus said about plowing the field with salt because in the story when he was called to go to war against the trojans he claimed insanity and was plowing his field with salt and its funny they was talking about right of one man one vote which was a concept thought up by socrates or plato i think?
The thing I always despised was how the women were characterized in the Greek Mythology. They were prone to suicide, undependable, bipolar, sex driven, selfish, and considered items. It was idiotic; and all the while, all the men ever did that was bad was possess too much hubris and arrogance.
@CoolMintMakeup The Troy is so unaccurate as the movie about hundred years' war with tank charges and mashine guns. No single detail was right there. And Helen of that movie has so much sex apeall as the bronze statue. This one at least is charming.
@danniizz18 ah but in troy parrise was a puzzy and here he's totally bad ass u have nothing to say 2 that? and also i think this one is better than troy just in troy the men are a lil hotter
Achilles was said to have red hair. According to Hyginus' Fabulae, fable 96, I read Thetis hid him on an island and Achilles was disguised as a women to keep him from being called to war. In hiding, the women called him a name that alluded to his red hair, Phyrra.
@EnviedCure776 No, in the Iliad there is no romantic attachment on both Helens and Agamemnons side. She is a sort of torn between Paris and Menelaos, but does not have any involvement with Agamemnon.
Wouldn't Agamemnon be the next heir to the throne, since he married the oldest daughter? I wouldn't know, but that seems like the logical thing to do.
the background in this movie (cities, costumes etc.) is good, but the acting is better in "Troy" in my opinion. On another hand, this movie is more similar to the real story.
@yosefbenyosef Well, there are actresses that have the looks to play Helen that would silence most of the critics. But Helen is an Ideal than a real. One man's beauty is another man's trash.
@imperatorcaesar100 -Both in this clip, and others...not that I'm complaining. If Helen had been like the characterless one in Troy, then I might feel like it was a cheap gimmick, but since she occopies such a large role in this, I don't mind...plus I'm predisposed to like breasts since I'm a dude. They had a profound impact on my life when I was an infant, or at least I've been led to believe....
I don't understand why that old guy stole Helen in the first place and raised her, then sort of "died for her" even though they weren't in love or anything?
He didn't. At least not in any of the myths I've read. Theseus stole Helen away because he wanted to marry a daughter of Zeus. (He had a bit of an ego by then.)He brought her back to his kingdom and left her in the care of his mother. Helen's brothers (Castor AND Pollux) rescued her, but there were no deaths. They simply kidnapped his mother!
Theseus is the founder of Athens and Hellen is the personification of Greece (Hellas) Athens is the greatest of Greece and its protector. Get it? Virtually nothing is left of Sparta, Korinth and Thebes while Athens, ancient polis is capital of what is now Greece.
The Athenians would die for Greece as at Marathon and Salamis. These stories were written in the Classical age as seen by those writers cast in allegory of their ancient past.
@EnonimusTransmission -Oh, I think they were kind of in love. -That's Stellan Skaarsgard who played ...I don't even remember his name. Doesn't matter. But Helen seemed -firstly- not that upset by her kidnapping, which sort of added to her innocence. Then it was obvious she got a kind of Stockholm's Syndrome thing for the guy, who suddenly seemed to feel guilty about his original intentions for the girl. They did seem to be in love, but he grew a conscience, I guess...
i think the movie is very beautiful and i like how they r showing the events that took place in the past but one thing that they made achellius look like aredeculous fool .while in the real story he is the protagonest and the whole story is about him
This movie was a little more true to the myth, I felt, if for its rather depressing inclusion of some of these gruesome and disturbing things. The Greek gods were as corrupt as their human adherents!
Is not Helen of Troy a title implying Helen's predominant role?-And there's no evidence that this is more than myth. They've unearthed the ancient city but all these characters are so far known only from myth. And you're darn about Achilles. They made another tv epic called 'The Oddyssey' with Armand Asaante and Isabella Rossilini, etc, that was similarly good. It's like a different side to the same story and then some.
menulaus was in Bridget Jones and Amamengon was in Triston and Isolde--saw this before I saw Troy with Brad Pitt-I thought Accillies was a ass till that movie
@renai0304 -Ya know, Brad Pitt's performance -his unconvincing accent, beach boy beardless look.....it made me feel a bit sad, . His look was for the audience, not for authenticity.
HOWEVER!!!
-He was totally freaking heroic in that film! In spite of my very minor complaints, he made Achilles feel truly legendary, did it justice, and when they would cheer his name...well...that there's what it's all about.
@preciousangel18 The prevelance of women as objects in like every music video (hyperbole) would seem to agree with me, but obviously you're right about not all guys being ghetto like that. Almost every guy in my family has turned out to be a complete moron, bad husband, bad father. I'm fortunate to have been able to observe and learn how NOT 2 B. -And remain safely single so far...
@JennalynRoa Yeah, I was about to say that. Thankfully, it's statistically a declining trend. But I doubt it will ever become 'just part of the history books'.
hoo boy was Tyndareus too bad too helen in thihs one he really isnt like that, he wanted to protect Helen in the true story hahaha and its not by lottery on how Menelaus was chosen XD
I love this scene,Achilles ends up looking like a total fool.:)he obviously does not respect women but he wants Helen too because she is the daughter of their greatest god Zeus and her beauty cannot be matched and no man can resist her,not even the great achilles. Its just funny how he goes from saying shit to just staring at helen like a complete idiot.
since pollux was the only heir and he died...the king gave helen to those kings and that was the ring thing...menelaus' ring was the one in the jar that is why he married helen and became the new king of sparta...get it? :)
@90938 -I'd rather a monk to this attempt at Achilles. At least a monk would have a cool, long robe that would look ever so dramatic as he spun and twirled and fougt off people with his lightsab- I mean sword...
@themachinegunn -And there's more archaeological evidence to support it, too, whereas this is and was meant to be a poetic myth. Alexander the Great apparently had the whole thing memorized, too, but he wouldn't have claimed to be descended from Achilles if he knew the guy was bald....
@Kotlettbengt THE BIBLE SUCKS?! OMILORD!!!-Have you any freaking idea how many awesome movies have come out of it and COULD come out of it? The book of Joshua and its battles?! King David?! -Actually, there's a pretty epic one called King David with Richard Gere. Priam of Troy is acually mentioned in The Ten Commandments. Religion, unfortunately, has tainted the idea of it, so I guess I'm not surprised...(sigh).....
@MuadDib27 -Oh, snap, that's right. Wolfgang Peterson's Troy had them as enemies. That dynamic was actually cool, because it made Achilles kind of more dominating and honoured than the king by the men....
@Bimfirestarter well, aside from Troy ( which i think was a wonderfully cast movie) Achilles' and Agammemnon's rivalry was infamous in the literary sources, the Iliad aside even.
Achilles in Troy was way more gay than this one, maybe it is better because Achilles is fake and gay.

omg.. bald achilles...
i initially thought he was a monk
lol...

@90938 -I'd rather a monk to this attempt at Achilles. At least a monk would have a cool, long robe that would look ever so dramatic as he spun and twirled and fougt off people with his lightsab- I mean sword...

Hmm... OK then :P But the Bible sucks ;)
Kotlettbengt 2 years ago
but more people have read it
themachinegunn 2 years ago
More people have read the IKEA catalogue as well, that doesn't make it a greater piece of art ;)
Kotlettbengt 2 years ago 4
@themachinegunn -And there's more archaeological evidence to support it, too, whereas this is and was meant to be a poetic myth. Alexander the Great apparently had the whole thing memorized, too, but he wouldn't have claimed to be descended from Achilles if he knew the guy was bald....
Bimfirestarter 1 year ago
lol..no it doesn't...:)
duhlikeicare 2 years ago
@duhlikeicare -Sure it does! Don't let that fellow downgrade it like that!
Come on, people!!! Who Hasn't read an ikea catalogue and then looked up into the starry sky at night, dumb with wonderment, and said:
"Damn....if Ridley Scott made this ikea catalogue into a movie, they'd have to invent a whole new level of awards just for how great it'd be"?

@Kotlettbengt THE BIBLE SUCKS?! OMILORD!!!-Have you any freaking idea how many awesome movies have come out of it and COULD come out of it? The book of Joshua and its battles?! King David?! -Actually, there's a pretty epic one called King David with Richard Gere. Priam of Troy is acually mentioned in The Ten Commandments. Religion, unfortunately, has tainted the idea of it, so I guess I'm not surprised...(sigh).....

WTF did they do to Achilles?!?!!! he's bald AND he agrees with Agamemnon!!!!
MuadDib27 3 years ago
Amen!!!
Kotlettbengt 3 years ago
@MuadDib27 -Oh, snap, that's right. Wolfgang Peterson's Troy had them as enemies. That dynamic was actually cool, because it made Achilles kind of more dominating and honoured than the king by the men....
Bimfirestarter 1 year ago
@Bimfirestarter well, aside from Troy ( which i think was a wonderfully cast movie) Achilles' and Agammemnon's rivalry was infamous in the literary sources, the Iliad aside even.
