Interestingly, I have Bill Wheeler's "Drum Techniques of Rush". And on the inside cover it notes that "The drum arrangements in this folio were prepared under the supervision of Neil Peart." So I am thinking it must be accurate. Anyway, I noticed that for Subdivisions, there is no ghost note on the third verse, just as you played it. So, I am thinking maybe the ghosting is possibly an improvisational thing Neil added in later; because he does do it in live videos.
I appreciate any drummer that even takes a stab a following NP's steps-hell, even NP will tell you (and has in interviews) how difficult it is to follow his own playing. Reborn drummer here and just happy to keep time! Keep them coming!
Nice to see someone attempt such a difficult but classic track. if you'll allow me to nit-pick(!).... At 0.50 This roll needs to be executed without an accent in the middle... 1.00 The double on the snare should be played with the Left hand only, not Right-Left as you did. Neil stays on the hat throughout & the figure isn't so heavy.
What really interests me here is just how great Neil's feel is - anyone that has seen Portnoy attempt Rush tunes will understand this. His feel is underrated IMO.
Nice work, Ray!!! Really tight!! Very impressive and very entertaining. Thanks for sharing your efforts. It's what makes being a Rush fan all about!!!
your an amazing drummer, but all im saying is that ur smallest tom is pissing me off because the word "Evans" is at a different angle then the rest of them -_-
Ray - Great job. As a long time Rush, and Neil Peart, fan you did extremely well. Making it look effortless, like you do, is no easy task - and there's a lot going on there. Job well done dude!
Hey Ray do you know what the drum heads that Neil uses these days are called? the clear ones that look like they have like a dead ringer on them but parts missing (like an outlining white circle that is broken in a few spots)
I am not a drummer would not notice the drop of the hand..Only a drummer would see that.. haha I play guitar.. Sounded great too me, not an easy guitar to copy..
Man....nice pocket dude!! Ive been a simi-pro bassist for nearly 30 years and so many drummers (and Bass players too) get so into perfect note for note playing that often the forget the " intent or feel of the song! You have a excellent grasp of both. Im sure you would be a pleasure to perform with! Rich
hey ray awesome job...however, i'm surprised that you don't play the the third verse right. neil drops his right hand down to play play ghost notes before accenting the hi-hat. i'm sure you know that and you can't miss it when neil does it live. that surprised me!! otherwise you nailed it...good job!!
Thanks! Yeah, I just recently noticed that Neil drops his right hand down to the snare like you said on that verse...I think I noticed it on the R30 DVD. ANYWAY, by the time I noticed this, I had already recorded this video. Thanks again!
Back then, I was using a Sonor HiLite maple snare with a vertical grain ply on the inside of the shell...It was an amazing snare! but, like "Homeslicedrummer" said, I just use a camcorder mic to record so that doesn't help...either way if you don't like the snare, you don't like it! Peace
@tonemeister3 he uses sabian paragons-the ones neil created and uses and also they have a logo but it is stamped in gold ink so it blends in a little-most cymbals have black or red ink
Hate him? I would be honoured to live next to someone that is able to drum like this-- especially because I would learn so much from him if he would ever be willing to.
But, seriously.. Rush has such an amazing atmosphere and Ray seems to capture it in his videos as well-- through drums. :)
Love the cover! What I appreciate even more is that you show a skill right near Neil himself, while still retaining your distinct style. And that is definitely a very good thing.
Wow, thanks a lot! Although Neil Peart is (obviously) a HUGE influence, I don't want to be a Neil clone! I think my style shows especially with my original material. Anyway, I appreciate the comment!
What your saying makes no sense...This is a drum tribute to a Rush song so I can play it how I want?! If I didn't play it note-for-note, oh well! Incidentally, I have other videos on here with an original band that I'm in as well as other covers.
PS I think I played this song for the most part note-for-note...Where do you think I "created my own fills"?
then name the video "My interpretation of Subdivisions." Don't set up your drums like Neil, wear a hat like Neil, then make up your own drum fills that are nowhere near the same degree of difficulty. That's just laziness.
I don't think you realize what the definition of 'cover' is. A cover is not an attempt to copy or mimic the original. It is a new rendition of a previously recorded song.
Oh, who am I kidding? Go look up the definition of cover or 'cover version' yourself on Google, Wikipedia, et cetera.
well put, and you are completely correct , however my friend I woud declare that the definition you speak of is in the context of artists within the music industry making 'covers' for commercial release, such as Motley Crue covering 'Smokin' in the boys room," or RUSH covering Buddy Holly's 'Not Fade Away" whereas here on youtube people are usually trying to 'cover' the song as accurately as possible to original in order to demonstrate a given proficiency level at their chosen instrument :-)
If I would put up a cover video (and I will), it wouldn't necessarily be to show off my skills, though. Before even starting to practice for a cover, I'll make sure the song is a lot of fun for me.
I get where you're coming from, though, and you are right. :)
"mikepostdrums" you know, i wish youtube would put our 2 recent posts where everyone in the world would see them because among all the bickering and downright nasty fighting on this site (don't know why people allow it on their pages, i don't), it seems most people don't realize that sometimes two people can disagree and both be correct, even in each other's minds, and even acknowledge such to each other...
What china is that. Im thinking of buying the 19 inch paragon but i cant find a store anywhere close by that has one, and i like to test before i buy.
I have viewed many of your videos and learned LOTS by watching you. Please keep playing. I always admired Peart and thought he would be impossible to play to but you have proved that theory incorrect. You are an inspiration to all of the young drummers who want to become great. THANKS!
hey: excellent work; your no joke. have you toyed with the solo from snakes and arrows? I think that's Neil's sickest piece of work. He really brings it for 07/08! good work!
Just fantastic, Ray! Love the views, both from above and in front. Your videos probably help alot of aspiring drummers, so keep doing 'em. Oh yeah, keep the Neil brim. It looks great!
Must of us know Neil Peart playing, we must respect what he have done and also people like you who copy his work.
I mean copying the whole thing, actually, your drum is the same + Paragone and you look like him too. I see pretty much 100% Rush influence. Maybe you are in a tribute band, that would make more sens to me.
What do you think about making a video with your own look and style, playing something coming out from you, like a solo! Well, nice job Neil Peart #2
Great job i myself do Rush covers, but need good quality video camera... =(. I am actually getting some new cymbals and i love yours could you send my a message telling me your crashes?? Please
Thanks man, on my newer videos I'm wearing just a "do-rag" because everyone was trippin on the hat. I have a Dr. Suess "Cat In The Hat" hat(seriously!) I'm thinking of wearing next...see how that goes over...lol

Absolutely incredible work man !
Almost exactly to the note.
If there is anything I know frontward, backward ,upside down and inside out is Neil Peart and his drumming.
You are the best I have seen/heard yet, including myself.
I walked in when someone was playing one of your tunes and I thought it was Neil, that is how dead on you are.
Just a slight pinch off in certain areas but jesus christ !

Propilot,
Neil said in the "Work in Progress" dvd that he wears it to keep the sweat out of his eyes while playing.

no I feel ya. thats cool. If you're gonna do a tribute band I think it only makes sense to adopt their look, even just for the evening.

Thanks man, on my newer videos I'm wearing just a "do-rag" because everyone was trippin on the hat. I have a Dr. Suess "Cat In The Hat" hat(seriously!) I'm thinking of wearing next...see how that goes over...lol
