  • why does everyone wear that goofy hat?

  • Great job on this; superb.

Interestingly, I have Bill Wheeler's "Drum Techniques of Rush". And on the inside cover it notes that "The drum arrangements in this folio were prepared under the supervision of Neil Peart." So I am thinking it must be accurate. Anyway, I noticed that for Subdivisions, there is no ghost note on the third verse, just as you played it. So, I am thinking maybe the ghosting is possibly an improvisational thing Neil added in later; because he does do it in live videos.

  • I love the old DW R.I.M.S

  • BRAVO, c'est la classe, comme l'original !!!!

  • Hi Ray

You are an amazing drummer making extremely nice drum covers of the Rush songs! Without your tributes, the wold would be a poor place to be!

  • cheers ray....great job man!

  • Your drums still aren't high enough in the mix though. I would love to be able to use this as a backing track to practice the bass.

  • amazing!!

  • what do you have holding up your 16" crash thats over the bass drum? is it a multi stand?

  • awesome bro!!love this song!

  • beyond awesome, beyond amazing bro! wow!

  • Ray I wish I could play just like you! Very well done indeed! Very Good!

  • I appreciate any drummer that even takes a stab a following NP's steps-hell, even NP will tell you (and has in interviews) how difficult it is to follow his own playing. Reborn drummer here and just happy to keep time! Keep them coming!

  • simply awesome. thanks Ray!

  • Nice to see someone attempt such a difficult but classic track. if you'll allow me to nit-pick(!).... At 0.50 This roll needs to be executed without an accent in the middle... 1.00 The double on the snare should be played with the Left hand only, not Right-Left as you did. Neil stays on the hat throughout & the figure isn't so heavy.

What really interests me here is just how great Neil's feel is - anyone that has seen Portnoy attempt Rush tunes will understand this. His feel is underrated IMO.

  • Nice work, Ray!!! Really tight!! Very impressive and very entertaining. Thanks for sharing your efforts. It's what makes being a Rush fan all about!!!

  • Any closer and it would God himself . . . . .

  • Absolutely incredible work man !

    Almost exactly to the note.

If there is anything I know frontward, backward ,upside down and inside out is Neil Peart and his drumming.

You are the best I have seen/heard yet, including myself.

I walked in when someone was playing one of your tunes and I thought it was Neil, that is how dead on you are.

Just a slight pinch off in certain areas but jesus christ !

    Absolutely incredible 5 stars !

  • i can say the best ''subdivisions'' cover on youtube so far

  • also in 2.50 you are the only one that play the bit correctly

  • watched your limelight video and thought it was neil!!!

  • your an amazing drummer, but all im saying is that ur smallest tom is pissing me off because the word "Evans" is at a different angle then the rest of them -_-

  • @MajorT127 Lol! That kind of thing usually bothers me too!

  • what makes me love this song is that piece at 0:27 - 0:37, i mean, how can you be so awesome to invent that

  • @Bokee234 You mean how awesome that Neil invented that!

  • @rays2112 exactly, by the way, your cover was great! :D

  • How long have you been playing?

  • Dude, you rock. However, that room looks small, you must drive your neighbors insane.

  • awesomess!!

  • Very nice my friend.

  • I like this song and you have done it justice. Keep up the good work Ray and hope you will more work like this. Good job man.

  • hey man great don t worry a really good drumming and also the remindind neal outfit more more more

  • Ray - Great job. As a long time Rush, and Neil Peart, fan you did extremely well. Making it look effortless, like you do, is no easy task - and there's a lot going on there. Job well done dude!

  • hmmm.. Late to say anything, almost 3 years ago. Hope you moved on. But impressive enough, congrats mate! Professors never die!

  • awesome cover no matter what anyone says its really good your snare does sound weird but YOU nailing it EVERYWAY POSSIBLE

  • I don't care how Neil drops his hands where Ray...I thought it was superb! Fun to watch and listen to....Kudos bro!

  • Cover up those legs or get a tan! Please!

  • Hey Ray do you know what the drum heads that Neil uses these days are called? the clear ones that look like they have like a dead ringer on them but parts missing (like an outlining white circle that is broken in a few spots)

  • dude...you ROCK!

  • Comment removed

  • Very Good Job Man, A Billion times better than i could of ever done :P

  • Those are pretty drums. I am just curious, do you transcribe the parts or do you just listen and play the parts? Either way it is impressive.

  • Great job Ray! I really enjoyed your playing - it's powerful and precise - just like that of the master himself. Keep it up!

  • Very well done Ray! I really enjoyed watching your performance of a song that I never tire of. Keep it up!

  • great job, RUSH always had the best drumming

  • Saweet!

  • sauly99... Are you fuckin' kidding ??? SHUT UP !

  • I love watching this video ! I wish there was more concert footage of Pert with cameras set up like this. Excellent job I really enjoy your talent.

  • Best cover drummer i have seen. You need to do your own stuff. You are good enough to create your own beats but stay away from using Neal's licks.

  • Guy that was freakin awsome.

  • amazing. one of the best on youtube!

  • great cover man

good technique and i like your style

    keep it up!

  • good shit man

  • Nice Job!

  • COOL...

  • Awesome stuff man... Awesome

  • I am not a drummer would not notice the drop of the hand..Only a drummer would see that.. haha I play guitar.. Sounded great too me, not an easy guitar to copy..

  • Had to comment again...super bad ass one of my favorite Rush songs!!

  • Tight even through Alex's solo to finish. Very good. I'll do a search for YYZ.

  • 4:27 to 4:31 . . . best run in the entire set!

  • 4:26 to 4:31 . . . best roll in the entire set!

  • Amazing job man! Sooo good!

    Love the overhead view also.

  • Absolute excellence on the dw set.....Rush is the best on the planet... RUSH Fan...

  • did you break a sweat...

  • you ARE DA SHIT...

  • I've heard this song a thousand times and you hit it right on! Great Job!

  • Great job. I´m see you very relaxed in you´re performance, you´re a very good drummer. Congrats.

  • Man....nice pocket dude!! Ive been a simi-pro bassist for nearly 30 years and so many drummers (and Bass players too) get so into perfect note for note playing that often the forget the " intent or feel of the song! You have a excellent grasp of both. Im sure you would be a pleasure to perform with! Rich

  • hey ray awesome job...however, i'm surprised that you don't play the the third verse right. neil drops his right hand down to play play ghost notes before accenting the hi-hat. i'm sure you know that and you can't miss it when neil does it live. that surprised me!! otherwise you nailed it...good job!!

  • Thanks! Yeah, I just recently noticed that Neil drops his right hand down to the snare like you said on that verse...I think I noticed it on the R30 DVD. ANYWAY, by the time I noticed this, I had already recorded this video. Thanks again!

  • @rays2112 Um, yeah Ray, I also noticed that on the fourth verse, Neil's left toe twitches a little left, but yours don't!!! What gives?

  • Awesome job!!! LOVE this song

  • i dont like ur snare sound dude X_X

  • He uses a DW Edge I think. They sound really awesome, but his quality of recording and mics is obviously not that great.

  • Back then, I was using a Sonor HiLite maple snare with a vertical grain ply on the inside of the shell...It was an amazing snare! but, like "Homeslicedrummer" said, I just use a camcorder mic to record so that doesn't help...either way if you don't like the snare, you don't like it! Peace

  • hehe i love sonor *-*

  • great job man rush is the best band and always will be

  • hey nice you're having fun. good show.

  • very nice stuff. not easy playing THE PROFESSOR

  • To be a drummer is to follow and not to copy

  • To me, life seems too short and mysterious to be negative about fellow humans. Without people, you're nothing...

  • Very nice! Great job on all those tricky fills.

  • Very nice- I remember drumming to this and LImelight about a million times..2 faves by Peart..looking at some VDrums now.. thanks!

  • Hello! I'm a huge fan of Rush. I just stumbled across your video. Job well done!!! 5 stars!! Peace2U, Kim

  • Well done Ray! You're quite the Peartophile. I see you've done your homework on the 'Subdivisions' video. Bravo!

  • what brand of cymbals do you use? I didn't see any logo on them. Awesome cover.

  • @tonemeister3 he uses sabian paragons-the ones neil created and uses and also they have a logo but it is stamped in gold ink so it blends in a little-most cymbals have black or red ink

  • Ray looks great man

  • very good i have a beginner drum set but it doesnt sound good i need to get another then i will be able to post some vids lol gj

  • @spikeshot17 u dont need to get a new one...get new heads and it will make ur drums sound really good-believe me

  • Dude - you nailed it!!! Well done!!!

  • Your neighbours must hate you, right? My favourite RUSH song covered brilliantly! 5 stars!

  • Hate him? I would be honoured to live next to someone that is able to drum like this-- especially because I would learn so much from him if he would ever be willing to.

But, seriously.. Rush has such an amazing atmosphere and Ray seems to capture it in his videos as well-- through drums. :)

  • i agree with mocmanvegas

  • Jesus dude-incredible-NO reason why you should not be playing professional.

  • God forbid if Neil ever quit playing you could easily fill his spot in the band.

  • Hey man, so good you are. regards from Brasil

  • Stunning. Love to watch this stuff.

  • 2:40 very smooth great job once again. Excellent wrist motions

  • Hella good i could listen all day...

  • dude, you are so pissing me off making it look so easy!!!!!

  • Sorry man...lol

  • KEEP THE GREAT JOB MAN, MY CONGRATS!

  • those over head shots you kinda look like neil lol

    great cover 5/5

  • Love the cover! What I appreciate even more is that you show a skill right near Neil himself, while still retaining your distinct style. And that is definitely a very good thing.

  • Wow, thanks a lot! Although Neil Peart is (obviously) a HUGE influence, I don't want to be a Neil clone! I think my style shows especially with my original material. Anyway, I appreciate the comment!

  • great to see who can play this drum part in this song. well done!!

  • granted i'm no expert and i'm high but from what i'm hearing it's spot on. you must teach me to master the peart beats. 5'd

  • correction: what I meant to say was that u can't just create your own drum fills for a song that ur trying to play along with

  • What your saying makes no sense...This is a drum tribute to a Rush song so I can play it how I want?! If I didn't play it note-for-note, oh well! Incidentally, I have other videos on here with an original band that I'm in as well as other covers.

PS I think I played this song for the most part note-for-note...Where do you think I "created my own fills"?

  • You can. Why shouldn't you be able to? Music is mostly about interpretation. With no interpretation, there wouldn't be any joy when listening..

  • then name the video "My interpretation of Subdivisions." Don't set up your drums like Neil, wear a hat like Neil, then make up your own drum fills that are nowhere near the same degree of difficulty. That's just laziness.

  • I don't think you realize what the definition of 'cover' is. A cover is not an attempt to copy or mimic the original. It is a new rendition of a previously recorded song.

Oh, who am I kidding? Go look up the definition of cover or 'cover version' yourself on Google, Wikipedia, et cetera.

  • show me where he uses the word "cover" anywhere in this posting

no more emails from angry boyfriends, please

  • Nice cover up. Get off the internet, please.

  • well put, and you are completely correct , however my friend I woud declare that the definition you speak of is in the context of artists within the music industry making 'covers' for commercial release, such as Motley Crue covering 'Smokin' in the boys room," or RUSH covering Buddy Holly's 'Not Fade Away" whereas here on youtube people are usually trying to 'cover' the song as accurately as possible to original in order to demonstrate a given proficiency level at their chosen instrument :-)

  • If I would put up a cover video (and I will), it wouldn't necessarily be to show off my skills, though. Before even starting to practice for a cover, I'll make sure the song is a lot of fun for me.

I get where you're coming from, though, and you are right. :)

  • "mikepostdrums" you know, i wish youtube would put our 2 recent posts where everyone in the world would see them because among all the bickering and downright nasty fighting on this site (don't know why people allow it on their pages, i don't), it seems most people don't realize that sometimes two people can disagree and both be correct, even in each other's minds, and even acknowledge such to each other...

    well done.

  • ray, your a good drummer, but you just can't invent your own drum fills. that just makes me think that u really CAN'T do it justice.

  • Absolutely fantastic job!! I totally admire your skills. You make this look easy :) 5*'s

  • Thanks very much!

  • Just favored this one! What a great job!

  • Thank you!

  • That was incredible! Fantastic job, keep it up, that was one of the most impressive Peart covers I've ever seen

  • awesome!!! really awesome!!!

  • i can do the exact same thing but only air drumming-im the best there is!

  • 100% AMAZING

  • Great job as usual. Look forward to any new stuff you put out. I have seen Neil many times up here in Canada and you do a great job Ray.

  • It just seemed effortless Great job Rush is 1 of my favorite and (Timeless)bands

  • Really enjoyed watching this - so perfect can't tell it from Peart!

  • Dude you have mad skills KEEP ON ROCKIN!!!!!

  • Nice

  • Great job. I would like to see u do sum Danny Carey stuff. He's from the band TOOL.

  • wow

  • My all time favorite Rush song !

  • you are the best drummer!

  • But can you ride a motorcycle? You kick ass!

  • F@%k dude!...Really!?

  • Dude...this is AWESOME! Very good job! that is all I have to say about that!

  • Just smoked those end fills! Nice!

  • What china is that. Im thinking of buying the 19 inch paragon but i cant find a store anywhere close by that has one, and i like to test before i buy.

  • This IS a 19" Paragon...epic China!

  • nice i love the trashy yet pronounced sound. I think im gonna bite the bullet and get one. Btw i love rush and your tributes are awesome.

Do xanadu or the camera eye.

  • that china sounds amazing>>>

  • this is the most amazing drum cover ive ever seen of any song.i watch all of your videos often.

  • I have viewed many of your videos and learned LOTS by watching you. Please keep playing. I always admired Peart and thought he would be impossible to play to but you have proved that theory incorrect. You are an inspiration to all of the young drummers who want to become great. THANKS!

P.S. What did you do with that old kit anyway?

  • Your an amazing drummer man

  • been an avid follower of the Professor for a little over twenty years. your drumming is most enjoyable. your excellent.

  • Great job, dude. I did an acoustic cover of this song where I did the keyboard parts on electric.

  • Its weird seeing you drum on your old kit.

  • lol yeah I know, it's funny because my new ride would've matched that kit better!

  • hey: excellent work; your no joke. have you toyed with the solo from snakes and arrows? I think that's Neil's sickest piece of work. He really brings it for 07/08! good work!

  • Hi Ray...awesome drumming!! :)

    Very nice kit too!!!

  • Thanks Kim! I appreciate that. This is my old kit, I'm playing my new kit on most of my other videos

  • flippin' sweet Ray!

    more!!

    XD

  • Awsome work , Keep the great work up :)) Necro ;p

  • As a bass player I love good drummers, Geddy is one of my faves and I think Neil is one of the top three. Great job guy!

  • Great Job!

  • Excellent job on one of my fav. Rush songs...

  • Awesome skills man, I play drums, well after watching you I guess I DONT play drums........LOL

  • dont play drums but if i could i would sure like to be as good as you. keep the music alive. long live rush.

  • Keep on ROCK N RAY

  • Just fantastic, Ray! Love the views, both from above and in front. Your videos probably help alot of aspiring drummers, so keep doing 'em. Oh yeah, keep the Neil brim. It looks great!

  • Amazing

  • WOW! Outstanding job.

  • Wow really nice!

Must of us know Neil Peart playing, we must respect what he have done and also people like you who copy his work.

I mean copying the whole thing, actually, your drum is the same + Paragone and you look like him too. I see pretty much 100% Rush influence. Maybe you are in a tribute band, that would make more sens to me.

What do you think about making a video with your own look and style, playing something coming out from you, like a solo! Well, nice job Neil Peart #2

  • Propilot,

Neil said in the "Work in Progress" dvd that he wears it to keep the sweat out of his eyes while playing.

  • THATS SO COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what does neil wear that hat, is it a religion?

Good Drumming by the way, in Subdevisions and in Natural Science. Awesome

  • to keep sweat out of his eyes and it looks cool

  • Great job i myself do Rush covers, but need good quality video camera... =(. I am actually getting some new cymbals and i love yours could you send my a message telling me your crashes?? Please

  • All Paragons...Two 16's and one 18 (this was an old set-up, check out my newer videos)

  • Nice editing! Sounds and looks great; I just wish I could see your feet :(

  • Very good playing ... on an extremely difficult piece of music

  • haha you even wear a hat like his?

  • ...as part of the tribute.

  • no I feel ya. thats cool. If you're gonna do a tribute band I think it only makes sense to adopt their look, even just for the evening.

  • Thanks man, on my newer videos I'm wearing just a "do-rag" because everyone was trippin on the hat. I have a Dr. Suess "Cat In The Hat" hat(seriously!) I'm thinking of wearing next...see how that goes over...lol
