  • u gotta love that bravura.

  • His playing is always so elegant and noble...

  • What an amazing finale!!! Everybody seems to be so into it. Fantastic to see the tension that arises between Brendel and Inbal when Inbal slows down. This slow pace creates an epic finale. Something is happening there... Brilliant! I can watch this over and over the entire day ;)

I can also recommend the performance of Berezovsky and Wolff with the Philharmonic Orchestra.

  • A fine performance!

  • Phenomenal performance, but Richter's is still my favorite by a longshot.

  • What the f*** is wrong with Brendel's lower jaw???

  • just amazing!

  • Who is the conductor?

  • Eliahu Inbal

  • right you are, you seem to know a lot about slips, what color do you prefer?

  • mr. brendel urged the conductor to play faster, the only demerit, or the orchestra played too slow suddenly

  • right, but I give Brendel credit for using his eyes and body to communicate with conductor that new feeling he wanted at that point, I haven't seen others do that. It's a rare moment captured between solist and condutor rapoort

  • to this point, i agree

  • imagine something :1.05---->1.19 watch his face... you can't see his hands maybe he's ma....and then 1.20 BANG !!!

    looooooooool !!!!

  • COULD SOMEONE TELL ME what makes mr Brendel's jaw shake like that . Is it a disease or a nervous twitch ???? (1.05, 1.12, 1.15 .... )

  • 2.52 is my favourite passage in all the concerto and especially the figure on left hand played loud at 2.57

  • oh yeah, 2.57 is a real listening treat, if that doesn't make you a Brendel fan, nothing will. No one I've heard plays it like that, nuff said.

  • Many people do 2:57 with the left hand, but at that moment it's not the left hand that Brendel handles excellently, it's the right hand descending notes.

  • It's the touch and the way he phrases the left hand part at that point that is great, there's an arc to that little phrase, like a small precise arrow shooting across the sound scape at that moment that's juicy to say the least. The right hand is also done excellently at that moment as you point out astutely.

  • great. this time I can't help laughing at him. he does his hair with bangers ! hahaha!

    Sorry, he's briliant .

  • This concert is a historical thing. Brendel understand better as any other this work. He is the only one able to master the fantastic harmonically and formal tension without sentimental and anecdotic dispersions. From beginning to end a bow taut. Others pianists make this concerto as a puzzle of (ugly) episodes. Brendel is completely sincere, engaging and moving. Technique level is phenomenal. The top. Some people listen to Brendel every day on computer and hate him.

  • I agree Brendel is a wonderful musician - top notch. I don't understand why people don't LOVE this concerto - I think it has lots of beautiful music in it (and lots of opportunity to show off!)

  • such strength, and then repose and control, even though the sound quality is lacking and it would have been nice to see Brendel on the double octaves at end of piece, played brilliantly and without flaw, this is a keeper in the Brendel historical record of non-parralled piano playing, not to be bettered, except if somebody has another Brendel video out there of same work played by him, thanks for posting!!!

  • Thanks for the affirmation, Brendel/Liszt, may be even a more superior combination than Brendel/Beethoven, Brendel/Shubert, right up there with Brendel/Mozart. Amazing a pianist can lay claim to really having sole dominion over both Liszt and Mozart, and you could add Schubert and Beethoven as well, can't think of anybody who plays any 4 of these composers better, more consistently and excitingly. Haydn also, come to think of it.

  • Exactly. So glad there are intelligent listeners here.

That is maybe one of the most admirable things that Brendel does.

In general, romantic performers are abysmal when it comes to playing classic pieces (and vice-versa). Why? Because romantic music gives place to rubato and this kind of music-is-just-passion bullshit. Excessive rubato is uncompatible with classic and even romantic music.

BUT Brendel understands music as a universal language and therefore he manages to get THIS achievements.

  • I think its very dumb when people start assuming rubato is only for romantic period music. Its always been used. Maybe not to the excess as in the romantic period but its been around a lot longer.

  • He looks funny, but plays seriously. Nice!

  • I am always surprised how the audience can stay that calm after such an electrifying performance. GENIUS!

  • Wenn Sie haben Recht, wenn die Aktion wurde in Uruguay eröffnet die öffentliche schrie bravo zu Wut

  • Congratulations. Alfred Brendel is one of the best interpreters of LISZT

  • Nice, I am the first listener. Excellent! Bravo!
