Dear Science is fucking flawless and Nine types is just pretty good, i miss the energy. They do smooth and pretty well, but i go to tvotr because i want energy and drive and every now and then some tearjerker. strong 6.
love this album. best of the year. im sorry but they're my favorite band and by law i have to say that. fleet foxes and destroyer are tied for second.
I want to have Cal Chuchesta's baby. I don't know how we'll make that happen since i'm a dude and he's a dude. But what we have is love. And with love, we'll find a way.
this is a lot of petty rambling about music that deserves everything but this. listening to tv on the radio and the way they handle interviews it really seems to me that this is a band that hasn't stopped playing in the truest sense of the word. any attempt to pigeon holing them like in that review is just plain lazy.
I love this album, almost from start to finish. I dislike "Keep Your Heart" and "Forgotten" strictly for the generic lyrics and vapid musical structure. Every other song is damn near perfect, especially "Killer Crane" and "Second Song."
I really like all the previous TVotR albums but this one was not clicking with me. I listened to it 15 times through and couldn't do it again. 15 bucks down the drain.
DO NOT READ. Joy to the world Osama's Dead, we bar-bequed his head! POST THIS ON AT LEAST 5 OTHER VIDEOS WITHIN 2 HOURS OR HIS GHOST WILL KILL YOU ON THE CLOSEST WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT 3:00 THIS IS REAL.
second review i've heard from this guy. second time i've wished i could surreptitiously slap someone through space and time. it took me three tries to spell that word right and i'm not sure if i'm using it correctly. long story short, if i ever think about clicking on this guys review again i want someone to surreptitiously slap me through space and time.
surprised you didn't like Return to Cookie Mountain. That's one of my top 10 favorite albums ever. I liked the new album, it was great; but not as good as Return to Cookie Mountain or Dear Science.
So far the album hasn't grabbed me as much as Dear Science did.. but having said that, Second Song has me utterly addicted so I haven't had a chance to listen to much more than just that one song so far!
I like the fact that TVOTR's albums are all different and that they grow on me. The first times i listened to their albums i didn't really find anything that stood out, but i would find myself weeks later humming a melody to one of the songs and falling in love with it. It's happened to me for almost everyone of their songs and this album is no different. There music reflects human nature which is to evolve and change.
Once again, I have to say that having a random record sticking its corner out in the background of your left shoulder is distracting when the focus should be on the album you're reviewing at the time.
That being said . . . I freaking LOVE Django Reinhardt!
You do realize that songs aren't meant to be listened in the order that's on the album correct? If you go to the Tv on the Radio youtube page, there is a 60 minute video which plays songs in the actual correct order along with music video accompanying each songs.
@Benutzer79 I'm not joking. I'm not really sure why they put the songs in that order on the album, but in the video they play in a different order and you will see that it makes the album lot more coherent (in terms of organization). I mean, why did they name the first song off the album "second song", its because it is supposed to be listened to second.
I agreed with your review completely. This is an album that definitely feels like the parts don't quite make up the whole, and while I do think each song has their own individual merits, some could have easily been swapped from the rest of their discography to fill in some layers. I don't think the title "Nine Types of Light" has anything to do with how heavy the weight is that these songs carry, but it's an overall good mix of good songs, even if a bit overcooked as a whole.
can you review Wagon Christ's newest LP "Toomorrow"? I'm interested in hearing your take on it. Wagon Christ is Luke Vibert's most prominent pseudonym and he's a part of the Ninja Tune Label with other artists like Amon Tobin, Bonobo, and Daedelus (just to name a few)
return to cookie mountain seems like more of a grower album to me, dear science is easily one of my fav albums of 2008 and possibly the decade, to be honest nine types of light is a slightly disapointing follow up but it still has some great moments, the main problem for me is the lack of "depth" in comparrison to their earlier stuff, not so much to get your teeth into, overall i give a 7/10 good review
Looking forward to your review of Battles - Gloss Drop, and if you like it I recommend checking Adebisi Shank's second album, some similar sounds but with more of a rock influence.
Completely agree Dear Science kicked my head in when i heard it too, good review only heard a few tracks of the new album, listening to it as we speak
you ought to give RtCM another listen, easily my favourite album of 2006 and perhaps even the decade - I still listen to it almost daily. I mean, if it's good enough for Bowie, then it's more than good enough for me.
I dunno I think he powders his face....As for TV on the Radio, I have yet to check out this new album. I loved return to cookie mountain but didn't really enjoy Dear Science.
I have to say I completely disagree on this one, but I suppose that's the name of the game. I absolutely can't stop listening to Nine Types of Light. I'm not quite sure it trumps their last release, but it's definitely hitting the spot for me at the moment. My one grievance is that I feel like there's perhaps a better track order for these tunes. Maybe I'll make up my own.
Cal Chuchesta is my primary inspiration, he is the aura of joy that composes my being. When I wake up in the morning I am thinking of Cal, and as a result I am able to get out of bed:
Cal is my pal- it really truly is true -Cal is my pal- I want to say I love you-
Cal is my pal- We are sitting on the bench- Cal is my pal- My genitalia is now tense
Please review ORBS - Asleep Next to Science. They're a band comprised of Between the Buried and Me, Fear Before and Cradle of Filth members. MP3s on their official website.
ME? I'm also not a big TVontheradio fan, but I wanted to give the new album a try.
(ever since the horrors second LP my ears are eager for surprises.)
so i gave it like 5 listenes - it's good, funky, and some of the tracks are really original and unique. It does feel like a take on some prince covers session, but since its really all original then touché. BUT the album falls short on the fact that it sounds like a compilation rather then an album. maybe Ill give the old LPs another listen...
You need to review "Mastodon - Crack the Skye" I know it was released back in 2009 but I think once you hear it, you will agree that it needed to be reviewed..... again!
I never really got all that much into their earlier stuff, but this album surprisingly hits all my sweet spots. I do kind of get the flow issue, though.
some songs on cookie mountain don't click until the trillionth listen. dear science is amazing in basically every way. nine types of light is only really amazing in its first half (although i agree that "you" could have been better). Still, Killer Crane is a masterpiece, and i love how it sounds like smashing pumpkins' thirty-three. i actually get a really '90s nostalgia vibe from this album, which is a very good thing
do you want to review the Kilimanjaro DarkjazzEnsemble - from the stairwell, maybe?
one of my favorites so far this year
and lately I was already disappointed a little bit from other bands I really wanted to hear another record from and then it turned out nox exactly what I hoped to hear...TVOTR follow suit.
the album got some great reviews and praise at other places, but a strong 6 sounds really fair, listened to it only a few times today but i am not as excited as i should be either.
I agree, it seems as though there are no real 'moments' on the record, no standout tracks...maybe they will drift to the surface in repeated listenings.
I feel the exact same way about the strokes album. Some of the tracks are really well put together and sound amazing, while others sound like they shouldn't even be there. Sad to say it but it was a bit of a segmented album in my opinion even though I love the strokes. Very excited about this new album for TotR. Thanks alot for reviewing it man.
I agree with you that exists a few songs that doesn't fit in this album. For me the first half was almost perfect, but the second one doesn't have this greatness i've felt before. Anyway, i think this one deserves an 8.5.
no but seriously i'm getting really tired of this fantano guy. when is cal going to just take over? it use to be cute "oh hey look at me. i wear glasses and talk about music" but now it's just kinda pathetic. this is like nickelback hiring tom waits to hit the tambourine for them.
@Caligula138 well yeah i do and if you really hate them. would you trust anthony to slam them in his reviews? personally i go for different skills. i dont think rise against are a good band but i love them cos they amuse me. i find elbow interesting and foo fighters love them or hate them they have definetly made an impact on rock music. i just picked obvious bands. cos i get sick of some of the hipster bullshit anthony sometimes review cos while i find knew bands.. i really dont give a fuck
Jeniferever's "Silesia", oh my god. PLEASE. there's mountains, Anthony. MOUNTAINS!!!! review it and i will never not not ask fro Cal again ever, forever.
Hey man! I know its not your usual MO to review big label bands, but please please do a review of the new Foo Fighters LP!! I will be forever grateful!
Dear Science is fucking flawless and Nine types is just pretty good, i miss the energy. They do smooth and pretty well, but i go to tvotr because i want energy and drive and every now and then some tearjerker. strong 6.

@realMUSICisMUSE You just listed 3 shitty fuckin bands... You have alot of balls
Caligula138 10 months ago
@Caligula138 well yeah i do and if you really hate them. would you trust anthony to slam them in his reviews? personally i go for different skills. i dont think rise against are a good band but i love them cos they amuse me. i find elbow interesting and foo fighters love them or hate them they have definetly made an impact on rock music. i just picked obvious bands. cos i get sick of some of the hipster bullshit anthony sometimes review cos while i find knew bands.. i really dont give a fuck
