@TheCal1109 absolutely not. You should try taking up the instrument actually. Its a little difficult for some, but as you can hear, it can make some swanky sounds ;)

My band director says that clarinets aren't jazz isntruments and he taught them all to play trumpet and sax. I'm a sax player and Im learning clarinet...just to piss him off..
Then your director is an official dumbass. They may refer to Benny Goodman, "King of Swing," Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey (yes, he did clarinet with his trumpet), Woodie Herman...the list goes on. Swing is, after all, a form of jazz. Check into jazz history-- you will find that clarinet was a prominent voice in jazz, way before sax took over. Artists liked the instrument due to its similarity to the human voice and it was used for such an illusion.
Please tell your director this info and proceed to support your position by typing in "Jazz clarinet" on Google. There is a LOT of information on it. You can give your teacher an education they never got XD. I really do not mean to come off as pretentious or anything....I am an avid clarinetist/fan and I truly do not like misinformed jazz wannabes who are so misinformed about such a vital part of clarinet's history. To know jazz, one must give clarinets their recognition.
@xMicroNikx My High School jazz band consisted of 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 1 trumpet, 1 tenor sax, 1 trombone, and a piano. I alternated between tenor sax and clarinet. Usually clarinet was our lead instrument.
I played clarinet for about 3 years before I was asked to fill in for a sax player in band one day. My director said "Don't worry, there's no difference"...and she was right. To me at least, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, all played the same except the weight and the strap.
How come he holds the clarinet so high? I play clarinet and I'm told not too. My teacher is the amazing, Dr. Bailey! Look up Zuil Bailey the cellist, that's his son!
That is only because he wants to teach basics first, I asssume, so as not to confuse beginners or to create bad postures. The raising comes with experience, need, style, and preference, kind of like reed stiffness. Really, the sound is mostly projected from the holes of the clarinet keys, like pipes. However, raising the clarinet offers some more projection from the bell area.
@SuperLalala50 Doing things like you're not supposed to is almost the basis of jazz. Play loud, improvise, hold the bell as high as you want! Though it requires technical ability to be done right, jazz is not focused on technique as much as letting out the feeling and emotion. Take Coltrane for example: everyone thought Giant Steps was a disaster at the time, now it's compositional technique is a celebrated staple of the genre. Having fun and experiment with your creative medium!
It is for better projection. Clarinets tend to get covered easily by their brass counterparts due to their material composition, build, and their range (excluding altissimo)
After Benny Goodman had been dubbed "The King of Swing," Artie Shaw's fans dubbed him "The King of the Clarinet." Asked about that in an interview, Shaw replied, "Benny Goodman plays the clarinet; I play music." (Of course, when you get right down to it, that's just about the definition of a distinction without a difference...)
Jazz is the best genre that I have learned on the clarinet, by far. Didn't really know about clarinets in jazz(though it was piano, bass, drums, sax, trombone, and trumpets).
Some really good clarinet jazz players out there(like Artie)
@LordUnas Um, nooooo! You got that line wrong, Beethoven said that for flutes, but anyway, every single instrument has it's on charm. The clarinet is perfect for jazz , especially the glisando ;) :D
My HS band instructor never let clarinets into his jazz band...I hated him for it....he has no clue how awesome clarinets can sound! I shoulda shown him this video!!!
I really do try to be open minded about modern music but as someone said you think of Artie Shaw,Frank Sinatra,Bing,Ella,Dean et al then think of Lady Gaga Nuff said
This is a great video, wow! Just think we have really come a long way from Artie Shaw, Sinatra, Crosby, Martin, to Lady Gaga. Yeah I really wish I lived back then.
@mantasparks15 It's available but it's a transcription of the studio recording( on yt - uploaded by cdbpdx) - so somewhat different than this. Artie improvises it a bit differently.
@dahbestclarinetplaya I thought there was something wrong with a 13 year old listening to Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. LOL now I'm well aware there are 182 other freaks like me <3
I once asked Barney Bigard if he were cast on a desert island and could have the records of only one clarinetist, who would it be? He said, Artie Shaw without a doubt.

Nick Fatool on Drums. I had a chance to write and tape to Nick in 1995-6. I always appreciated his swing style and let him know it. He even sent me a Christmas card, bless his heart. I still have it. John-Hans Melcher
I can't believe he thought he had bad technique on the clarinet! - that gliss technique doesn't come easy, only HARD practice could have produced that.
That last high note on the clarinet was super clean....that's pretty hard to do on a clarinet because most high notes on the clarinet sound "whiney". But, his high notes were clean, articulate, and had a real nice tone to it as compared to most clarinet players. Of course anybody can get a nice mellow tone in the lower register on the clarinet...but those notes in the upper register are hard to play with nice tonicity and clarity without sounding screechy.
That technique is what jazzists like to call laughing on the clarinet. Its very hard and only few people can do it. I myself have been trying for YEARS! I shouldn't give up. He's awesome.
exactly what type of jazz is this? there are so many different types that I know there are specific names to each one. It has that big band-ish vibe but the orchestra (violins) are there which makes it more confusing to which is it. similar music to the big bad voodoo daddy band... but then different....
Ahhhhh. When music was music. My cousin went to some concert last night and when I asked who the band was she said, it was someone I would have never heard of and it wasn't really a band it was done on the computer. Well THIS is really a band.

I'm a beginner Bb Clarinetist. I've been playing for about two years now, and I think I can play pretty well. But this man is very talented, and I think I might be able to play something along those lines. I play jazz on my clarinet with my father, and I think I have the hang of it. I'm just not well at sight-reading.
check out these dudes they played very well. Check it out and leave a comment....Its played by a Turkish Gipsy on a G Clarinet.... The sounds are different but its interresting to listen how the clarinet is played in other cultures
Man his jazz is so amazing. Playing that high notes without having to play the lower notes to get to the high ones (i do that cuz its so freakin hard).
ahaha! =D it does take practice.. but once you get it you have it easy.. i'm gr10 i can can play high notes on the clarinet no prob.. now what is really amazing is his feel of the beat and of his instrument
@arseny22 yeah, gr10 here too and I can play an octave above the thumb and register key C, but that doesn't make a good player at all. I suck at clarinet.
I have a specific question. I've been playing clarinet for 4 years now. I have an excellent glissando and nice touch for bending notes but which brand clarinets are best for jazz taste? Is it something else that affects or makes that certain jazzy tone?
look up a call named Kurt Heisag he custom picks buffet R-13's and then he fixes them up by hand, i recently got one from here, the will run you around 3,700. but its definatley worth it, i have never played a net like the one he engineered for me, he is an amazing fellow. He also hand carves moth pieces, on top of that he teaches students some of which are world famous, I happen to live in the same town as his one shop, but he mail orders all over the world. check it out guys he rocks.
I use a Selmer for jazz and a B & H Emperor for classical. The Selmer allows more flexibility of tone and greater musical agility, while the Emperor has characteristics better suited to classical.
I've played sax for four years, and have never really liked the clarinet until I heard this. I always thought of the clarinet as a boring horn, but now that I've heard it in jazz, I honestly want to play it. It sounds so cool.
Not a player. Just made them for 20 years. I think this vid proves that clarinets rule!!!!!!!! Long live Leblanc! The name still exists but not the heart. Or the soul. Let it be known that I have no idea what brand Artie played, I'm just saying that I love them and I wish I could still make them!!!
Awesome!!!!!!

Man his jazz is so amazing. Playing that high notes without having to play the lower notes to get to the high ones (i do that cuz its so freakin hard).
GuitarFreako5 2 years ago 5
I used to do that too but if you manage to keep your neck relaxed then its nothing...
orfeas2 2 years ago
It's still pretty hard...
Tech502 2 years ago
ahaha! =D it does take practice.. but once you get it you have it easy.. i'm gr10 i can can play high notes on the clarinet no prob.. now what is really amazing is his feel of the beat and of his instrument
arseny22 2 years ago
@arseny22 yeah, gr10 here too and I can play an octave above the thumb and register key C, but that doesn't make a good player at all. I suck at clarinet.

I have a specific question. I've been playing clarinet for 4 years now. I have an excellent glissando and nice touch for bending notes but which brand clarinets are best for jazz taste? Is it something else that affects or makes that certain jazzy tone?
Abriggs500 2 years ago 2
look up a call named Kurt Heisag he custom picks buffet R-13's and then he fixes them up by hand, i recently got one from here, the will run you around 3,700. but its definatley worth it, i have never played a net like the one he engineered for me, he is an amazing fellow.
