  • Awesome!!!!!!

  • 1:49-1:52 XD

  • what piece is this and is there anywhere I can get sheet music? I've been trying to do it by ear but I really suck at that :D

  • incredible! i wish you could hear music like this today

  • This is cool

  • Super !!!

  • 1:20 in the end get it onnnnnnnnnnn :DDDD

  • is it bad that im 14 and i like vintage music like artie shaw?

  • @TheCal1109 absolutely not. You should try taking up the instrument actually. Its a little difficult for some, but as you can hear, it can make some swanky sounds ;)

  • @Angeni666 hahah yea id definatly like to play the clarinet

  • this makes me proud to be a clarinetist

  • I love part 1:49 - 1:51, and of course this entire song!

  • we need more guys like this man noone is a guy who plays clarinet in my band -_-

  • This guy got all the chicks on 1940 +_+ (Y)

  • Now thats a real jazz man ! +_+

  • I was just learning piano and i had to quit because we couldn't afford to buy a piano...i was devastated....i had been learning for about 3 years now I am struggling to pick an instrument and i have always wanted to play the clarinet or the oboe!

ANY others you think would be good please tell me! I want the clarinet most because of it's sound and it looks in our price range. PS i really don't want to learn flute first And do you know that the price ranges are?

  • @sprite4asia flute kind of sucks. it doesnt have the range or versatility of the clarinet. if you learn clarinet there is a multitude of other reeded instruments you could learn.

  • @PyroTechnicalnsanity okay thanks

  • @sprite4asia You can pick up a decent Starter Clarinet for around $200 to $300 used. Would recommend looking for a Yamaha or a Selmer. Check your local classified adds. There are always people selling off there kids old Bad Clarinets.

  • My band director says that clarinets aren't jazz isntruments and he taught them all to play trumpet and sax. I'm a sax player and Im learning clarinet...just to piss him off..

  • @xMicroNikx Clarinets are the most awesomest jazz instruments ever D:<

  • @xMicroNikx

Then your director is an official dumbass. They may refer to Benny Goodman, "King of Swing," Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey (yes, he did clarinet with his trumpet), Woodie Herman...the list goes on. Swing is, after all, a form of jazz. Check into jazz history-- you will find that clarinet was a prominent voice in jazz, way before sax took over. Artists liked the instrument due to its similarity to the human voice and it was used for such an illusion.

  • @xMicroNikx

Please tell your director this info and proceed to support your position by typing in "Jazz clarinet" on Google. There is a LOT of information on it. You can give your teacher an education they never got XD. I really do not mean to come off as pretentious or anything....I am an avid clarinetist/fan and I truly do not like misinformed jazz wannabes who are so misinformed about such a vital part of clarinet's history. To know jazz, one must give clarinets their recognition.

  • @xMicroNikx My High School jazz band consisted of 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 1 trumpet, 1 tenor sax, 1 trombone, and a piano. I alternated between tenor sax and clarinet. Usually clarinet was our lead instrument.

I played clarinet for about 3 years before I was asked to fill in for a sax player in band one day. My director said "Don't worry, there's no difference"...and she was right. To me at least, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, all played the same except the weight and the strap.

  • How come he holds the clarinet so high? I play clarinet and I'm told not too. My teacher is the amazing, Dr. Bailey! Look up Zuil Bailey the cellist, that's his son!

  • @SuperLalala50

That is only because he wants to teach basics first, I asssume, so as not to confuse beginners or to create bad postures. The raising comes with experience, need, style, and preference, kind of like reed stiffness. Really, the sound is mostly projected from the holes of the clarinet keys, like pipes. However, raising the clarinet offers some more projection from the bell area.

  • @SuperLalala50 Doing things like you're not supposed to is almost the basis of jazz. Play loud, improvise, hold the bell as high as you want! Though it requires technical ability to be done right, jazz is not focused on technique as much as letting out the feeling and emotion. Take Coltrane for example: everyone thought Giant Steps was a disaster at the time, now it's compositional technique is a celebrated staple of the genre. Having fun and experiment with your creative medium!

  • will ferrel looks really weird in this movie

  • WOODWINDS KICK BRASS!

  • He holds the clarinet so freaking high like a trumpet almost.

  • @Spectonimous

It is for better projection. Clarinets tend to get covered easily by their brass counterparts due to their material composition, build, and their range (excluding altissimo)

  • 2:46 SICK gliss

  • 1:49 SYNCHRONIZED REST COUNTING! (OR AS MY COUSIN CALLED IT, LEG TWITCHING) :DDDDD

  • After Benny Goodman had been dubbed "The King of Swing," Artie Shaw's fans dubbed him "The King of the Clarinet." Asked about that in an interview, Shaw replied, "Benny Goodman plays the clarinet; I play music." (Of course, when you get right down to it, that's just about the definition of a distinction without a difference...)

  • Jazz is the best genre that I have learned on the clarinet, by far. Didn't really know about clarinets in jazz(though it was piano, bass, drums, sax, trombone, and trumpets).

Some really good clarinet jazz players out there(like Artie)

  • clarinets are awesome, but personally i prefer saxophones :)

  • @LordUnas Don't hate. :)

  • @LordUnas Um, nooooo! You got that line wrong, Beethoven said that for flutes, but anyway, every single instrument has it's on charm. The clarinet is perfect for jazz , especially the glisando ;) :D

  • @LordUnas You're a total idiot. What do you think sounds good?

  • I like 3:04 the best.

  • My HS band instructor never let clarinets into his jazz band...I hated him for it....he has no clue how awesome clarinets can sound! I shoulda shown him this video!!!

  • @BesoinHailey What a idiot.

  • Glad this video is here! Pople from other countries that love this music and the clarinet would have no access to it otherwise!

  • I MUST PLAY THAT! how can i get the notes for it? :O what's the name of that song?

  • hold 5!

  • I really do try to be open minded about modern music but as someone said you think of Artie Shaw,Frank Sinatra,Bing,Ella,Dean et al then think of Lady Gaga Nuff said

  • @ted2321 I shivered when I did.

  • Hello Capital Wasteland! It's Three Dog on Galaxy News Radio!!!

  • I'm on a clarinet trip right now. Love it in jazz, classical, and klezmer. Artie Shaw FTW!

  • This is a great video, wow! Just think we have really come a long way from Artie Shaw, Sinatra, Crosby, Martin, to Lady Gaga. Yeah I really wish I lived back then.

  • No matter how hard I try, I just can't get it to sound anywhere near as good argh!!!

  • thats sure swing'n

  • Lol @ 1:48

  • damn im a good clarinet player cuz i made it 2 state but man dis dude iz soo freakin awesome

  • What's with the random guy sweeping in the back at 1:00?

  • @clem8417 It's a scene from a movie :)

  • @SleeperInTheShadow Thanks lol now I feel dumb

  • crazy the drummer isnt playin traditional style bein 1940

  • I want the sheet music to the clarinet part! Someone must have written it down! I can't improvise but I want it for a performance!

  • @mantasparks15 It's available but it's a transcription of the studio recording( on yt - uploaded by cdbpdx) - so somewhat different than this. Artie improvises it a bit differently.

  • Is this from a movie?

im a clarinetist and i wish see this movie^_^

is some one know his name and from where i can download it pls contact me ^^

    on my YT account=D

  • if i tried playing this on my clarinet it would sound like a cat getting ran over ;p

  • His high C is so intune. XD

  • @elsieetv Right?

  • I've just listed some out of print Artie Shaw and other swing clarinet sheet music on Etsy.

    etsy.com/shop/lauraslastditch?section_id=7952918

  • @ elsieetv thats wierd! clarinets r perfect for jazz in my opinion, and my school allows them in the jazz band...

    also, these guys r great!

  • OMG A SEIS PERGONAS NO LES GUSTA!

  • thumbs up if u think that the clrinet is the best instrument in the world and its awesome for jazz and orchestra

  • @dahbestclarinetplaya It totally is. I play clarinet in my jazz band, and it's probably the best decision I've ever made in my life!

  • @dahbestclarinetplaya And it is awesome in classical music as well. Check out Sharon Kam, Julian Bliss, Martin Frost to name but a few.

  • @dahbestclarinetplaya I thought there was something wrong with a 13 year old listening to Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. LOL now I'm well aware there are 182 other freaks like me <3

  • wooooooo!!!!

  • Wish i could play like that!

  • this is the greatest of all instruments in jazz, if you ask me, even the trumpet. I just love that classic sound you get with a clarinet.

  • Why can't my school allow clarinetists to join jazz band?

Yuck, I have to learn a saxophone in 4 months. D:

  • whoa... i cant even bend notes that well in my DREAMS...

  • cool

  • I once asked Barney Bigard if he were cast on a desert island and could have the records of only one clarinetist, who would it be? He said, Artie Shaw without a doubt.

  • That's Guarnieri on piano and Butterfield on trumpet, right?

  • Clarinet Concerto, Artie Shaw. Enough said.

  • AMAZING sums it all up.

  • What a beautiful song, especially the ending.

  • too bad the sound quality is old.

  • Nick Fatool on Drums. I had a chance to write and tape to Nick in 1995-6. I always appreciated his swing style and let him know it. He even sent me a Christmas card, bless his heart. I still have it. John-Hans Melcher

  • cheesy

  • I can't believe he thought he had bad technique on the clarinet! - that gliss technique doesn't come easy, only HARD practice could have produced that.

  • amazing (:

  • Great video! Just think of all the jobs that the big bands employed! All lost now.

  • i should ask my band teacher if she could teach me 1:23 lol cause i do play clarinet :P

  • this is what everyone should call PRO

  • That last high note on the clarinet was super clean....that's pretty hard to do on a clarinet because most high notes on the clarinet sound "whiney". But, his high notes were clean, articulate, and had a real nice tone to it as compared to most clarinet players. Of course anybody can get a nice mellow tone in the lower register on the clarinet...but those notes in the upper register are hard to play with nice tonicity and clarity without sounding screechy.

  • Quel talent ce Artie Show ! ça swingue à mort !

    SUPER !

  • what's the name of the peace?

  • thi sguy is a genious

  • This makes Benny Goodman just a shadow compared to Artie Shaw!!!!!!!!!

  • @klarinetta they both amazing,

  • He made that clarinet his btch. That was beautiful/

  • Also, thumbs up for the hyper-extended double-para-diddle.

  • The world needs more muted trumpet.

  • did they play the clarinet different back then? you can't play a clarinet with that horn angle.

  • @leonjohansen yes you can actually. i guess it more jazzy? xD My friend Madie can play like that, though it's mostly to try and play in my ear xDD

  • Very excellent! Anyone who like's this should also check out Wanderlei Silva, he's a Brazilian.

  • is he... a magician?

  • F**cking legend

  • joder coje el clarinete como si fuera un oboe

    esta muy bien saludos

  • is perfect ads and my favorites

  • is perfect

  • I wonder if this is a studio recording added to the film or was it played and recorded live here in the scene.

  • Nice atmosphere

  • LOVE THIS!!!!!! i miss jazz band if only my teacher would let us play the clarinet!!! grrr.

well i had fun with saxophone too ^^

  • Wooaaahhhhh ! Wonderful...

  • His playing in the upper register is fluid. I particularly like the run at 1:48! What a master!

  • That technique is what jazzists like to call laughing on the clarinet. Its very hard and only few people can do it. I myself have been trying for YEARS! I shouldn't give up. He's awesome.

  • exactly what type of jazz is this? there are so many different types that I know there are specific names to each one. It has that big band-ish vibe but the orchestra (violins) are there which makes it more confusing to which is it. similar music to the big bad voodoo daddy band... but then different....

  • i played clarinet for two years and i hated it soooooooo damn bad and now i think i shouldve kept it lol

  • @tinadom343 Me too man. I sucked at it so bad. No I kinda regret it. :)

  • and i wanted to quit playing the clarinet after years of playing it just because i thought they werent good for jazz...

  • @stevenvato11

Right here on YouTube, search for Pete Fountain!

  • its a bummer he quit the clarinet, he was so good...

  • this is one of the moments i'm proud to play clarinet. i wish my fingers could move that fast.

  • His fingers are moving too fast for me to see... I swear it'll be another 50 years before I can play as quick as him. :p And not squeak.

  • Ahhhhh. When music was music. My cousin went to some concert last night and when I asked who the band was she said, it was someone I would have never heard of and it wasn't really a band it was done on the computer. Well THIS is really a band.

  • this song is amazing and and i appreciate it and all...but look at artie's pants!!! LMAO

  • who is better, artie shaw, or benny goodman?

  • @BurningMonkeyStudios Why does it matter? They were both stellar musicians, and each had his own style. They both contributed to our great musical history.

  • Beautiful Vibrato!!

  • He lived down the street from me in his later years.

  • and my too!

  • Artie Shaw, you are my hero! :D

  • Great moment. Thanks

  • That last high note didn't sound like a clarinet... o.o

    It was beatiful!!!

  • Hey hilldominator, is it the music or the way they play that makes them racist? Is it important that you make ytour point about racism or that you evidence a lack of perspective and context when it comes to 1940. When was it that Jackie Robinson played for the Brooklyn Dodgers? How about that Hope and Change in the White House? We will always have racists and fools. I will put you in the latter category.

  • even though its a great jazzband. their all nothing more than just a bunch of racist.

  • lol @ all the violinists tapping their feet. the anticipation of that note at the end made the final result so much more amazing.

  • I'm a beginner Bb Clarinetist. I've been playing for about two years now, and I think I can play pretty well. But this man is very talented, and I think I might be able to play something along those lines. I play jazz on my clarinet with my father, and I think I have the hang of it. I'm just not well at sight-reading.

  • just practice

  • SHUT UP YOU TROLL.

  • @MissInconcdite Keep practicing hard, you'll get there.

  • @MissInconcdite i've played for a few months in 7th grade band and i'm really good, i'm moving up to high school band

  • amazing clarinet skillz i wonder if it E flat or B flat

  • @figrulz that's a Bb (:

  • @figrulz

Eflat is about half the length

  • check out these dudes they played very well. Check it out and leave a comment....Its played by a Turkish Gipsy on a G Clarinet.... The sounds are different but its interresting to listen how the clarinet is played in other cultures

    watch?v=nBUGdd6w5hU&feature=related

    watch?v=gpqPHKeI1xI

  • wow...this guy kicks butt :D. Lol I wish I could play with my clarinet holding it up that high

  • nice

  • Artie Shaw is the best i tip my hat 2 him

  • this guy is ORGASMIC on the clarinet! XD

  • Wow. Outstanding!

  • dear god, one of the best songs ive ever heard. and ive never seen a guy drum with such stamina.

  • this is kick assssss

  • This is SOOOO pro :D!

  • por que no hay negros?

  • por que ellos no les gusta negros en los 1920s???? i dont speak great spanish but Blacks were not quite... liked in the time of this video

  • Who's on the drums? It sounds like Krupa's jungle tom's, but the face is someone else.

  • This makes me feel purely happy.

  • Man his jazz is so amazing. Playing that high notes without having to play the lower notes to get to the high ones (i do that cuz its so freakin hard).

  • I used to do that too but if you manage to keep your neck relaxed then its nothing...

  • It's still pretty hard...

  • ahaha! =D it does take practice.. but once you get it you have it easy.. i'm gr10 i can can play high notes on the clarinet no prob.. now what is really amazing is his feel of the beat and of his instrument

  • @arseny22 yeah, gr10 here too and I can play an octave above the thumb and register key C, but that doesn't make a good player at all. I suck at clarinet.

  • hehe! then you should understand what i'm saying quite well veezbokumar =)

  • ahh i wish i still played ...

  • I have a specific question. I've been playing clarinet for 4 years now. I have an excellent glissando and nice touch for bending notes but which brand clarinets are best for jazz taste? Is it something else that affects or makes that certain jazzy tone?

  • look up a call named Kurt Heisag he custom picks buffet R-13's and then he fixes them up by hand, i recently got one from here, the will run you around 3,700. but its definatley worth it, i have never played a net like the one he engineered for me, he is an amazing fellow. He also hand carves moth pieces, on top of that he teaches students some of which are world famous, I happen to live in the same town as his one shop, but he mail orders all over the world. check it out guys he rocks.

  • I use a Selmer for jazz and a B & H Emperor for classical. The Selmer allows more flexibility of tone and greater musical agility, while the Emperor has characteristics better suited to classical.

  • Comment removed

  • definitely not what a buffet r-13 sounds like now adays

  • haha woohoo! i got a Leblanc! XD YEAH!

  • I've played sax for four years, and have never really liked the clarinet until I heard this. I always thought of the clarinet as a boring horn, but now that I've heard it in jazz, I honestly want to play it. It sounds so cool.

  • its hard as hell!! but switching 4rm clarinet 2 sax was a breeze! u should be able 2 play Clarinet (despite all the new keys u have 2 learn)

  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE CLARINET, LOOK AT MY NICKNAME lolz

  • what grade are you im about to do my grade 6

  • mygod!! wanna be like him!! haha! *Dreamin :D

  • Not a player. Just made them for 20 years. I think this vid proves that clarinets rule!!!!!!!! Long live Leblanc! The name still exists but not the heart. Or the soul. Let it be known that I have no idea what brand Artie played, I'm just saying that I love them and I wish I could still make them!!!
