@JoshuaMazur This is even more obvious in the MET version of this with Alagna and Keenlyside. Poor Rodrigo, he throws such a hopeful look when Carlo sings "amo... d 'un colpevole amor"... and then, when he learns that it's Elisabetta that Carlo loves, he is so disappointed I pity him every time I watch the scene.
@WolfpackRules it's the mix and balance of the recording. i own this on dvd and the balance is just really bad. whomever mixed and edited the recording for the dvd didn't do a good job.
I saw this production (with Alalgna as Carlo) last week live from the Met in a movie theater in my home town and it was just FANTASTIC, a pure beauty from the beggining to the last final note! Special mention to SIMON KEENLYSIDE and FERRUCIO FURLANETTO! And thanks to the Met that allows people from outside US to share those wonderful moments!
@matthieusarah I have a DVD of this same production and Villazon seems in better voice on it than here and he and Keenlyside were absolutely STUNNING in Rodrigo's death scene, far more so than Alagna and Keenlyside at the MET (which I too saw at the cinema) as Alagna was far more stilted in his acting in that scene than Villazon, but the MET version was also stunning.
Yay finally, thanks so much! I've been waiting for someone to post clips ever since I read it was on TV last week. It's very interesting to compare this version to this year's.

Seems like the sound balance is off -- they seem to be struggling to heard above the orchestra. Hmm.
I love Keenlyside in this; Villazon, not so much. I prefer Alagna in this role.

This is true Art! It is not Rolando singing Don Carlo, it is Don Carlo himself. Loving suffering, hating!!! Genius!!!
