@Euroman25 It can't change the angle of the rotors and it's not turbine-driven. This thing has just a superficial resemblance. It's basic design is rather comparable to the russian Mil Mi-12 but this thing is also turbine-driven and carries them just below the rotor itself.
I almost wish the war had dragged on longer, the germans had so many crazy ideas (landkruzer) and so many innovative ones too. It would be interesting to see where the Fa223 would have gone.
woa, the germans were quite innovative, they were actually the first to put helicopters into real use, but played an insignificant role in the war, i think they were used in North Africa? liftin small amounts of troops here and there. if they invested in this rather than v1, v2 rockets and extremely overweight panzers with small powerhouses maybe they could have done better against the soviets, thats if they have proper protection and stronger lift capacity.
Stronger Lift capacity? Interestingly enough, the Fl 282 still has the best lift to horsepower ratio of any helicopter in history. Nothing matches it.
The Fa223 was rather amazing for a ww2 helicopter with ability to lift external loads well over 1 tonne. That's a fully equiped Fieseler Storch it's lifting in the clip, and the engine from a FW 190. Not too shabby.
They were ahead of their time. They had plans to build a scaled up version of this helicopter designed to lift a fully loaded king tiger. 80 tonnes. I don't doubt that they might have planned for such a thing. The Germans at that time didn't believe anything was impossible; with time and material they could have built most anything. They could dream big and they worked towards it. I wish more people were like that today.
The structure looks similar to that of a Junkers bomber.

can you image fallschrmjagers rapeling down ropes on this thing with FG42's or Gebirgsjäger in the moutans with MP44's

Is it just or does that craft look like a primitive version of the V-22?
Euroman25 3 years ago
Simpler and more efficient than V-22.

@GendPzTrSchmidt Though the Germans did have something similar to the V-22 in development, the Wesrflug P.1003 and the FA 269.

They also had things like the Vampire night vision sight thing, and that thing that shoots around corners. They would have been fun

Fa-223s were used by German special forces in the rescue of Benito Mussolini --- possibly the first heli-borne commando raid in history.

Yes, they trained on the Fa-223s and only at the last minute was a Fieseler Storch used to fly out el Duce because of a mechanical break-down.
