Yes - let's definitely treat the children as if they are adults - because we all know that the same things that motivate adults, also motivate children. And let's make the consequence of not completing an assignment...um, what was that again? Oh, yeah! Completing it. Because if they didn't do it when it was assigned, they will definitely do it when the teacher tells them, "You didn't complete your assignment, so now you are going to have to....complete your assignment." Brilliant.
FWIW, I have seen scores of zero motivate many people. Just today, a student who was cheating on a lab by copying other's work was given a zero and now that I have conference with her, I'm pretty confident she won't be cheating again in this class. It wasn't my meeting with her that motivated her, it was the consequence of her action.
