Great fight!! Man I forgot how good Fernando Vargas was. He fought so skillfully before he fought Trinidad. I think he let the hype and Machismo of the Mexican vs. Puerto Rican matchup get to him and tried too hard to slug it out with Trinidad. This was a really close and competitive fight with Winky who I believe is bonafide Hall of Fame.

I had it 115-113 for Winky; I think he had more cleaner, effective punches, better ring generalship and better defense. Alot of those power shots ortiz ( i mean Vargas) threw didnt land or just hit arms or winky's gloves; they look good but are not effective. Winky's conditioning was better than Vargas' for this fight too that's why he held up with his strategy down the stretch.
this fight reminds sorta me of the DLH fight with Felix Trinidad...Winky thought he had the fight won, and started to play it too safe. Vargas is anything but a fighter who only fights half way through. He finished the fight and winky didnt.

To beat a prospect as hyped as Vargas was, though, you need to knock him out or humiliate him to get the decision. Also, the judges weren't familiar with Wright's style. To pull out a close MD loss with all of those factors against him is a testament to Wright's ability, which he was able to showcase after this fight.

To beat a prospect as hyped as Vargas was, though, you need to knock him out or humiliate him to get the decision. Also, the judges weren't familiar with Wright's style. To pull out a close MD loss with all of those factors against him is a testament to Wright's ability, which he was able to showcase after this fight.

@LikeABreath : You think Wright "won the fight convincingly"? By all accounts--except yours--it was close and a difficult one to score. Wright landed lots of right jabs but not as many power shots. Fernando landed the harder blows and boxed skillfully. Perhaps if it was an amateur fight, yeah, maybe Wright wins it. But it's the pros, dude, and Vargas won it fair and square. Convincingly? That's nonsense.

i agree,damn how judges coul give the fight to the champ after those 12 rounds,a champ has to do the champ in a fight,WRIGHT kept ever the center of the ring and made the fight,FACT!!
