I find her to be pitchy a lot of the time. I do like that she sings with a lot of emotion though, and also that she plays the piano while singing and has showmanship and stage presence.
Moreover, it is truly in the soulful style of the great Luther VanDross who made this practically his signature song! Next to Luther VanDross himself, this is the best version if this song I've ever heard or seen!!!!
@flyingdutchman09 This rendition is not sloppy or awful at all. She sang this song beautifully and her voice is very beautiful and smooth, especially in this performance. I am not trying to push my opinion on you, but this the most beautiful I ever heard her sing.
@glaciervillage No she doesn't! Why are you listening to her if you think she does? She's a great singer and this is a great rendition, especially since she made it her own. Her voice sound the most beautiful, velvety, and tender, so it is no way she was bad in this performance.
I think Alicia Keyes sound better in the studio than live. I like her but I'm never blown away by her live performances. I prefer modern day artists to do original stuff because their interpretation of old school songs are often mediocre.
@jesushateswood Many people are blown away by her live performances because she puts so much emotion into her live performances. There are other great live performances. What are you talking about? Her live performances are better than the studio.
@ThePianoguy89 You're obviously an Alicia fan. That's cool. Like I said before, I like her. She's very iikeable. But Alicia's music just doesn't do much for me. I like female vocals like Ledisi, Chrisette Michele, Fantasia and some of Marsha Ambrosha.
She sounds like she's trying to hard and putting fake emotion into the song. Barbra's is my favourite version- especially when it includes One Less Bell. ^.^
@IDontShine423 Alicia never sings with fake emotion, she's just that soulful and that's why I love her. She still did great here, but nothing compares to Luther, nonetheless it is her own.
You know, this is why I say this woman is hated for no reason. No she's not Luther, who do you know that can compare to Luther? No One. She's Alicia Keys. to say this was a bad vocal performance is hating IMO. Where? When? How? She did it WELL, not the best, but well. Damn, y'all expect her to be the Jesus of music or something?
Alicia is one of the truly great artists. There is absolutely nothing fake about her or her voice. Every note she sings is from her heart. This is her way of singing this song and I love it. She's always so emotional and so dedicated. Don't know how anyone could think she is fake. She is totally engrossed in this song. It's like she's in another space. Thank God for artists like her who still bless us with their beautiful music. Much love and admiration for her.
@paulatown This is not a sorry performance. I know nothing comes close to Luther's performance, but Alicia is a great singer. IMO I love this performance and she performed it with so much emotion and soul. She's singing it from her heart and at least she's doing it her way and not imitating the original.
How did this singer gain so much fame? This was hard to endure--off key most of the time. She reminds of a runner up at a small, local beauty pagent during the talent portion.
Jacob Lusk's version is IMHO the BEST rendition of this great tune. Luther's of course was great too but everyone seems to forget to give credit to the writer of this song, the great Burt Bacharach.
Some parts of the song were gorgeous others...not so much. I think her voice is a little to powerful and has a lot of vibrator to it so it doesn't really go with the song. A few notes I think if she had gone higher it would've sounded better. Not the worst version but not the best either.
Typical off-pitch, overblown Alicia, the over-pushed pop artist. Always too much effort, too much hype, too much ornamentation that fails, pitch-wise. Rushed arrangements, artificial peaks and emotion. Alicia demonstrates our artificial pop society, and belies the very instruments she fronts (piano, strings) with this shallow skillset. Calling it like I see it. She is so sharp most of the time that it grates at my stomach. You can't be off like this and call yourself a pro.
@TallSomeone No she is not. She is very authentic with her as an artist. She is not off-pitch. If she was off-pitch, her voice would not have blended with the chord progressions. She sings with so much soul and emotion. How can you say she's artificial when she's not. Her music is very passionate and her voice is too. She is not even off and every musician has off moments too because nobody is perfect.
l'une des plus grandes chanteuses de ce 21e siècle et d'une simplicité à toute épreuve un plaisir sur scène une maitrise vocale et surtout une musicienne au sens large
One of the greatest songs ever written lyricly musicaly and it is very difficult to play coming from a very accomplished musician.I love Burt Dusty Luther Tamyra but to play that piano sing her bleeding heart out Alicia was an Amazing best.
@Lyricalsoul55 Exactly, people just like to overuse terminology that they do not even know about. If she was pitchy, her notes would note by well-centered. Her notes are not off. She is not off-key! At 2:42 that was a strong and accurate Eb3. People seem to be tone deaf!
@ThePianoguy89 Pitchy is rihanna doing "What's My Name" people take what they hear others say and apply it to every video she does. It's quite annoying
@CHANTELsce Yes Rihanna is always pitchy, but people always want to criticize Alicia. They obviously want her to sound just like Luther in this performance. I am glad that there are some people who undersatnd her vocal ability. A long-time ago, people did not hate on her and people barely critcized her. People always praised her for her talent. Why people do this now?
@ThePianoguy89 I just don't know. I'll always love and appreciate her vocal talent. I know when Alicia struggles and this was not a performance where she struggled.
@sookiestackhouse2u Alicia Keys did a beautiful rendition of this song. At least she made it her own and she sang with such emotion and sincerity. She's a genuine singer and she's true to herself.
@ThePianoguy89 ... Alicia is a talented singer BUT ... she was totally OFF on this song. Singers have bad days/performances too, you know? Get over it.
i clicked on this out of curiosity. and i wish i hadn't. quite out of tune sounding in places and she added in all those annoying trills that pop singers do. definately leave it to luther!
aside from 3:20 ..i dont like it...and i dont like to hate..especially on my gurl alicia..but i mean this song needs much more than she gave it. but she idd her thang. she did it the way she could have..so good for you gurl =)
Aicelle Santos gave a specTACular performance. Blew Tamyra Gray, or whatev her name is, OUT the water...So sorry but when T Gray got all Deep throat with her voice, it just turned me off. Alicia did better than her, and her beginning had a rocky start.
Why does everyone try to do this like Luther Vandross? Sing it strait up without all the modulation. It is a beautiful song that doesn't need so much embellishment.
I don't get why people go gaga over alicia cause for me, she just okay. just like every other record hitting solo artist. sure she has a good vocals, beautiful face, but see, she's just like every other celebrity out there with their flaws and strengths. I don't like this version of hers though. :|
she's great in a studio but I've never seen her sing live and hit every note bang on(as is required on american idol!) randy jackson would definately say she was a little pitchy in places!
She is BEAUTIFUL! a Living Legend! We should all be so lucky to have this great artist in our lifetime! I truly admire this woman in every way! the Timeless beauty, her poise, her sass, her swag! she is AMAZING!!!
However, I don't know if that is due to her singing being better than it originally seemed, or if it's simply because I think that she is the finest thing on two legs.
to be honest, it's not the singing, even luther sounded off key in his best performance of the song. it's that there's a lot of dissonant chords, and it's hard to reconcile the vocals with them... the singing is a-ok to me :)
No. It is precisely the singing. There are more non-diatonic chords and notes in a typical jazz standard than you can shake a stick at, and those songs are likely to change key (often several times) in the middle of the song. None of that ever caused Ella the least bit of trouble.
@Hoopermazing No actually I meant most, clearly what i said. i know ppl who are veterans when it comes to music. Individuals who have the actual records, 100s if not thousands from Ella and Duken, Prince, Chicago, Micheal, Luther, The Drifters, the Dells, The Delfonics, The Floaters, Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, Sam Cooke, Kool and the Gang, Vanity, Diana Ross, Rose Royce, The Rolling Stones, Teddy, Barry, The Stylistics, and the 1000s more, and they didnt even know that Dionne sang it,
@Hoopermazing no Dionne cant get away with it either. Once he sang it, it no longer belonged to her and she pretty much knew it. Thats why most dont know she originally sung it.
@Number1amazment By "most" you must mean other children, like yourself, who have no firsthand knowledge of either Luther or Dionne. Beat it, kid. You bother me. (I'm sure that you don't get that reference either. Yours is a woefully ignorant generation.)
@Hoopermazing And actually it took me forever to find her on youtube singing it, and I could hardly find a refutable live performance. And you bother me your beligerent response was quite bewildering since my comment didn't germanely require such a response. Most of it was my opinion which i'm happy to admit. So why don't you Float On You Sucker MC, Sad Face Clown ( In the words of the Floaters and RUN DMC)
@Number1amazment - You don't know shit about anything pre-2000, youngin'. The fact that you reference RUN DMC has supporting your old school musical credentials is laughable. As is your childish claim (a claim only a stupid kid would make) that most people, who are aware of the song at all, don't know that Dionne Warwick sang it first. You don't have the frame of reference to argue with me. So, keep your dick-sucker shut when grown folks are talking.
@Hoopermazing wow thats sad. I can tell from your vocabulary and your responses that you are some dogmatic, simpleton. I apologize for offending you with my original comment. My reference to RUN DMC had nothing to do with supporting credentials, I just found that particular song germane at the time. I feel no need to continue answering your diatribes. Enjoy your music and have a great day. For I know who my God is, and soon you will too....and all your music knowledge will be meaningless. Bye!
@Hoopermazing You don't even know me. Your whole issue is because I stated something you disagreed with, and from your remarks you would think we had multiple conversations. Grow up. My remark wasn't an attack. Relax do something more productive with your time. Tomorrow is the most important date in history, do you know that. Do some research about Nisan 14 then talk to me!
This actually isn't a "male song" the first version of this was by a woman. As a matter of fact there are plenty other covers of this song up here on youtube done by woman (including DELLA REESE) before Luther was even born
trochę się popisuje swoimi umiejętnościami ale i tak jest znakomita i jedyna w swoim rodzaju, uwielbiam ją, kiedy będzie w Polsce? chcę iść na jej koncert!
i agree. she's a wonderful singer. but this song exposes weaknesses in her technique. her standard approach is mid tone for verses then jump to slightly higher tone for chorus, and back again. initiating tone and holding tone in lower range and jumping up and down from low range to hold tone was barely adequate here. but in her element she's the bomb!!!
She stinks to high heaven. Watch Dusty Springfield & Burt Bacharach for a definitive version. And what was that fucking stupid laugh toward the end of the song. Absolutely HORRID!!
@sookiestackhouse2u I brought up Toni Braxton because they have similar voice types. Toni Braxton is a dramatic contralto, Alicia Keys is a lyrical contralto.
Alicia hit the notes she could hit and left the ones alone she couldn't She did an excellent job of singing the song and still have good vocals on point, Come on people, this was a tribute in 2004 to Luther, she was giving respects
im sure luther vand ross did it better, its his song
but i dont dislike alicia´s version either and her lower register isnt THAT bad its just that people are more used to hearing her sing as the soprano that she is
Oh man, who are you to say something like that- "she sucks"!!? She is the best singer ever, and her lower register is brilliant, she just dont using it so many times.
she doesnt suck at all!! i love a.keys but in this particular performance her lower register did suck..just keeping it real!! and i think this song does her voice no justice..just my opinion!!
This has been flagged as spam show
even though some notes were more than off... i like this performance. it's smoother than the usual belted version.
the 'when it ends, it ends in tears' part at 1:08 and 'still in love with me' ending at 3:25 were stunning.

This was one of Luther's greatest songs!
Ms. Alicia Keys truly does it justice!
I believe Luther might be looking down and and approvingly singing to himself: "Yeah, Yeah, You Go Girl." Great Job Ms. Keys!!

I don't get why people go gaga over alicia cause for me, she just okay. just like every other record hitting solo artist. sure she has a good vocals, beautiful face, but see, she's just like every other celebrity out there with their flaws and strengths. I don't like this version of hers though. :|

she's great in a studio but I've never seen her sing live and hit every note bang on(as is required on american idol!) randy jackson would definately say she was a little pitchy in places!
fisasinger 1 year ago
She's alway's off key. Not really a good singer of others songs.

@Kippu1
100% Agree... Compared to Luther's version this one is nothing... Her voice sounds very unstable when he has to hit some high pitch notes...

Upon a second listening, it not as bad.
However, I don't know if that is due to her singing being better than it originally seemed, or if it's simply because I think that she is the finest thing on two legs.
Hoopermazing 1 year ago 2
Hoopster, probably the 2nd reason.
but it''s not bad, but I'm just thankful youngins sing these songs.
Jkaneshige 1 year ago
to be honest, it's not the singing, even luther sounded off key in his best performance of the song. it's that there's a lot of dissonant chords, and it's hard to reconcile the vocals with them... the singing is a-ok to me :)
thoyo 1 year ago
No. It is precisely the singing. There are more non-diatonic chords and notes in a typical jazz standard than you can shake a stick at, and those songs are likely to change key (often several times) in the middle of the song. None of that ever caused Ella the least bit of trouble.
Hoopermazing 1 year ago 2
@Hoopermazing No actually I meant most, clearly what i said. i know ppl who are veterans when it comes to music. Individuals who have the actual records, 100s if not thousands from Ella and Duken, Prince, Chicago, Micheal, Luther, The Drifters, the Dells, The Delfonics, The Floaters, Funkadelic, Sly and the Family Stone, Sam Cooke, Kool and the Gang, Vanity, Diana Ross, Rose Royce, The Rolling Stones, Teddy, Barry, The Stylistics, and the 1000s more, and they didnt even know that Dionne sang it,
Number1amazment 1 year ago
Oooooooh. that was ugly.
In the black world, it is always a bad idea to sing something associated with Luther. Dionne can get away with it because she sung it first.
Hoopermazing 1 year ago
@Hoopermazing no Dionne cant get away with it either. Once he sang it, it no longer belonged to her and she pretty much knew it. Thats why most dont know she originally sung it.
Number1amazment 1 year ago
@Number1amazment By "most" you must mean other children, like yourself, who have no firsthand knowledge of either Luther or Dionne. Beat it, kid. You bother me. (I'm sure that you don't get that reference either. Yours is a woefully ignorant generation.)
Hoopermazing 1 year ago
@Hoopermazing And actually it took me forever to find her on youtube singing it, and I could hardly find a refutable live performance. And you bother me your beligerent response was quite bewildering since my comment didn't germanely require such a response. Most of it was my opinion which i'm happy to admit. So why don't you Float On You Sucker MC, Sad Face Clown ( In the words of the Floaters and RUN DMC)
Number1amazment 1 year ago
@Number1amazment - You don't know shit about anything pre-2000, youngin'. The fact that you reference RUN DMC has supporting your old school musical credentials is laughable. As is your childish claim (a claim only a stupid kid would make) that most people, who are aware of the song at all, don't know that Dionne Warwick sang it first. You don't have the frame of reference to argue with me. So, keep your dick-sucker shut when grown folks are talking.
Hoopermazing 1 year ago
@Hoopermazing wow thats sad. I can tell from your vocabulary and your responses that you are some dogmatic, simpleton. I apologize for offending you with my original comment. My reference to RUN DMC had nothing to do with supporting credentials, I just found that particular song germane at the time. I feel no need to continue answering your diatribes. Enjoy your music and have a great day. For I know who my God is, and soon you will too....and all your music knowledge will be meaningless. Bye!
Number1amazment 1 year ago
@Hoopermazing You don't even know me. Your whole issue is because I stated something you disagreed with, and from your remarks you would think we had multiple conversations. Grow up. My remark wasn't an attack. Relax do something more productive with your time. Tomorrow is the most important date in history, do you know that. Do some research about Nisan 14 then talk to me!

listen to it again, and still...this is not her song, sorry...
ernolazlo1604 1 year ago
Well this a male song and the lower range was change to fit her voice, she killed it.
vocalbelts854 2 years ago
This actually isn't a "male song" the first version of this was by a woman. As a matter of fact there are plenty other covers of this song up here on youtube done by woman (including DELLA REESE) before Luther was even born

i agree. she's a wonderful singer. but this song exposes weaknesses in her technique. her standard approach is mid tone for verses then jump to slightly higher tone for chorus, and back again. initiating tone and holding tone in lower range and jumping up and down from low range to hold tone was barely adequate here. but in her element she's the bomb!!!

She stinks to high heaven. Watch Dusty Springfield & Burt Bacharach for a definitive version. And what was that fucking stupid laugh toward the end of the song. Absolutely HORRID!!

alicia lower register is way better now, and she is a contralto not soprano, soprano have high pitch voice,
THEWORLD661 2 years ago 17
@THEWORLD661 I highly doubt that she is a contralto. That is the rarest voice type. I believe she is an alto
drmplaya34 1 year ago
@drmplaya34
Alto isn't technically a voice type though.
iFauxPas 1 year ago
@drmplaya34 She is a contralto, she has a low timbre, like Toni Braxton.
ThePianoguy89 1 year ago
@ThePianoguy89 ... Toni Braxton has a totally different sound/voice.
sookiestackhouse2u 1 year ago
@sookiestackhouse2u I brought up Toni Braxton because they have similar voice types. Toni Braxton is a dramatic contralto, Alicia Keys is a lyrical contralto.
ThePianoguy89 1 year ago
Alicia hit the notes she could hit and left the ones alone she couldn't She did an excellent job of singing the song and still have good vocals on point, Come on people, this was a tribute in 2004 to Luther, she was giving respects
queenray1 2 years ago 2
im sure luther vand ross did it better, its his song
but i dont dislike alicia´s version either and her lower register isnt THAT bad its just that people are more used to hearing her sing as the soprano that she is

Oh man, who are you to say something like that- "she sucks"!!? She is the best singer ever, and her lower register is brilliant, she just dont using it so many times.
smoleklemen 2 years ago
she doesnt suck at all!! i love a.keys but in this particular performance her lower register did suck..just keeping it real!! and i think this song does her voice no justice..just my opinion!!

I agree. Her low was out of tune. She did better the higher she went....
