@rory2u the reason they're protesting is because for a long time our offshore oil and gas has been more or less given away to the likes of shell. Ireland actually receives very little money from these companies. Also what bothers the locals and many other people is the fact that this is an experimental project which is very dangerous to houses near the pipeline planned to run onshore. I'm not sure if shell have changed how they plan to bring the gas to shore but what you said is ignorant!!
