Love this, thank you!! Very inspirational for a community bmx track over here in london... Although, weather permitting, corrosion would be a problem...
If lined with straw bales on outside, insulated on inside correctly - i cant see why this would pose no more of a ground to earth problem than any other modern building currently being erected... I'm sure once the windows are fitted it the natural light thang will be overcome too
@silasw7 Might just be baked but wouldn't the whole metal building act as a ground to earth?? I mean that's a huge metal building half buried in the ground why would the current ever move through you?
Just out of curiosity, if you dont mind, how much was the building cost for the super structure alone at the time of this video? This is some kind of awesome my man ;)
When I first saw the design I was shocked; it looked like some sort of post apocalyptic fort. But seeing what you have done in part two makes me think it's going to be spectacular because of all of your planning. Congrats on following your dream.

The root cellar is a great idea and im sure you've researched plenty of other energy efficient alternatives. Id like to see the specs and what equipment you will use, a very good opportunity for you to show everyone what is acheivable when building eco. Very exciting stuff, well done.
Good Day Everyone. Part 3 was done in early Dec but they wanted to save the video for the next update. For updates, please google glennonseacanhome.ca and you can follow our progress there. All videos and news releases are on the site. Some things such as windows etc. will be added as they come up. Windows are here but we are battling snow removal so far this month. Thank you.
Questions: How to deal with corrosion in basement? The elevator: I'm 56, thought about that. How? (cost!) Have you considered interior lighting/daytime via fiber optics? (Google pool lighting). Will you use industrial (forklif) batteries? Deep cycle at least. Considering ceramic ins. paint, have to do both anyway. Wind generators, any thoughts?
So what causes a container to be 'out of commission' for it's intended purpose? What's causes such a surplus and are they mechanically damaged or compromised? I can't find the answer to that simple question anywhere...
@ebasss You can buy containers that have nothing wrong with them, in my area they all over the place. They sell in free auto swappers and classified adds.
@soco13466 Im in michigan, I see then in classifieds and auto swappers all the time they are usually right around $1900 give or take a few hundred, plus you have to pay a shipper to deliver, Im not sure how much exactly that is.
@ebasss Surplus is caused by fact that it's cheaper for Asians to send one way. Return too expensive. Condition depends on your wallet. I saw a open side/with doors entire length new $5000. There are thousands of these things piling up in port cities. $ basic grades: "New", 1 trip. Next, re-usables for further ocean travel. Next, "watertight" Next, needs work. Way I understand, the more in one buy, better unit price. Am I wrong anyone? Tell me.
@ebasss Use the Google, Luke. I did. Use "used shipping containers sales condition". Whatever, it's there if you take enough time. Basically I'd go for the 2nd level, still seaworthy, but used more than once. Depends on your wallet and desire for perfection. You can buy "once used." Idea: Try Ebay. Saw some there.
By the way you should rent a bedroom out as a motel room for people interested in staying after you finish your project. A lot of people would like to stay the night here and pay a premium price for it.
@CreQ Ahh. just build a "guesthouse" out of more containers. Better yet, go into business, like those log cabin outfits. Have a decent model home, then have sales aids to show what's possible. You can go from "Thrifty" to "Deluxe." Think of it as Legos and Erector set rolled into one. This whole thing makes me feel like a kid anticipating Christmas. I'm going to be able to cut costs by doing my own welding and metal fab, plus electrical, plumbing, floors, etc. Now to buy the land...
This project is huge. very cool. What is the difficulty getting the insulation attached to the house. Are you just using fasteners straight to the exterior or do you add any type of framing?
@cocobolo82 Look up "ceramic insulation paint." You need to paint the thing, plus insulate it, so why not fold both into one? Supposed to protect from corrosion. Additional advantage: no need to use up space inside to insulate, also, eliminate need for wallboard, etc. Other thing I saw was spray on insulation, inside. The ceramic looks better. This is all internet info, I'm just in planning, but taking time to figure it out, pick brains is best I think. This guy has elevator ideas: I want them.
Wow. I live hour and half north of you =P Edmonton. Are you totally off the grid? How much was each Sea can? I assume you have a huge garden. This is truly inspirational. Looking at the USA and the rest of the world as it stands....if things get worse which is enevitable it's nice to know some people will fair well. Nice job!!
@jawbraeka I call this, "cooking breakfast." Anyone who can cook worth a damn knows that you start with the potatoes, then meat, then eggs and toast. This can be used to test someone's organizational skills. If you know basically how to cook each, but blow it by starting with the eggs... well you get it. Start with the support section, then work your way out. If you're building such a home, well, you'll be needing the home base (shop) to work from.
This is Awesome great idea thanks for sharing. Good luck to you I hope it all works at the way you planned it to. Can't wait to see how it turned out.
Our website is now up and running for anyone who is interested. It is not fully functional as yet but you can check out our progress at glennonseacanhome.ca Thanks for the support.
how much does a single container cost, and if you can tell me how much the entire project is going to cost when finished. cant wait to see it when completed. you are a genius and innovator
@HASSON1911 He's in Alberta, Way Up There In Canada. (Hint: go to his profile). Personally, I'll build in Tn, where the hills have eyes (kidding)... I'll be in East Tn., where they do have hills and worn down mountains... nice and green, water plentiful, sun and wind enough, rain for the rain barrels to run the showers, laundry and toilets, AND NOT SO F-CKIN' COLD! Believe me, I'm originally from Mi, now in the south. And I like it.
@homerbear46 haha Don't forget the sharks and the flag poles.. i realize looking at the containers the imagination runs wild must be from lego days lol
Quick question, how come you stagger you nogs/dwangs in your timber framing ?
Is it to make horizontal nailing easier ?
.
If you can skew nail them inline it makes it way easier when it comes to wall cladding.
.
Awesome job - been drawing up plans for a shipping container off-grid dwelling a while ago, ... then realised the limitations as to how remote a site I could choose accordingly ... "DOH".
@TheUnNerved GOOGLE glennonseacanhome.ca and its the first link if you want to keep updated on whats been going on....
looks amazing so far and can't wait for this to be finished and a documentary done on this... well the documentary is a bit of a long stretch but here's to hoping... no i'm not saying one is going to be made i just wish there would be HINT HINT...
Bob Villa did a segment on using shipping containers to build a home.
(Google Bob Villa Shipping Container)
In it showed attachment of panels to outer skin, along with a CERAMIC type coating that was being sprayed on. (Ceramic coating being based off of the type of material used in the USA SPACE SHUTTLE HEAT TILES.) Sounded interesting.
Sounds like we were separated at birth- I have for years thought about a design like yours.
Couple of questions /ideas
1: Plans, due to your workbackground /contacts is there a set of "Engineered" plans?, and 2 what kind of building codes do you have in your area? I ask because it would be EXTREMELY helpful to those wanting to build something like you have if you could upload blueprints, info on your experience on getting code approval.
@WeAreNotAlone69 please could i also get a set of these plans as my girlfriend and i would love to get some ideas as we too are also wanting to build our own shipping container home.
@jawbraeka Please check out our website and you will be able to send us an e-mail from there. We had our basic drawings done up ourselves and then found an engineer to follow them through to meet codes and such. Our place is very large for various reasons but please contact us through the site and we will help you through the process. web site is glennonseacanhome.ca
@GlennonSeaCanHome Thanks man... as this is something we are both trying to achieve ... complete sustainability and no outside interference ie power gas or water.
I can't find anything with the completed product. Is it finished? They said 600k, wow. I would love some parts of that home. It's awesome.

Hey fella,
.
"DOH".

We have test SuperTherm on one of our seacan as a trial. It works very well, but with our Canadian winters, we would still need more insulation.
We have began a web site for all who are interested but it won't be up and running for a couple more weeks. We will post the site when it is up.

2: Hope this posts:
Bob Villa did a segment on using shipping containers to build a home.
(Google Bob Villa Shipping Container)
In it showed attachment of panels to outer skin, along with a CERAMIC type coating that was being sprayed on. (Ceramic coating being based off of the type of material used in the USA SPACE SHUTTLE HEAT TILES.) Sounded interesting.

Bill,
Sounds like we were separated at birth- I have for years thought about a design like yours.
