is the sm57 a good mic for recording? im looking for some mics to record with nd i heard that this might be better than most condensors. Thanks, and nice song btw.:)
@drummerboy9551 SM57 is the go-to affordable instrument mic. It's okay for vocals too, but the best mic choice always depends on the singers voice and on your other gear. If you have money for just one mic, get this one.
how can this video have 7 thumbs down? Music? Niiiice. Humor? Niiiice. Production? Niiiiiiiiice. And only with software! Come on people dont be so negative.
@Ronixis Did you use VSTi's for the distortion on the guitars in the Amnesia track? You guys make some great music. This is the style I want to record.
@StalinStudio I really don't know :D I just yell loud and add some heat (by pushing from the diaphragm) and the voice gets distorted. I'm constantly on the edge of my highest register, so it's a really hard thing to pull off live, but I'm getting better at it. This isn't probably the safest or the easiest way to produce distorted vocals, but for me, this feels the most natural way of doing it.
@Ronixis i wish i could use more diaphragm and less throat constriction but its hard, especially if you are constantly teetering on the high end of your own register so good job yet again man. dig the vocals for sure, very different in a sea of sameness
i have question about the mic .. does it capture the surrounding envirnoment or just the sound in front of it? my room has the street noises to come in & i dont know how to solve this
yea i kinda know that, but i mean through ur experience, have u tried recording with some noise outside the room? does it pick that?
srry for much Qs:) im totally pissed with the outside noises & dont wanna purchase a mic that picks them & end up disappointed .. if u have any ideas too that will be much appreciated:)
@EhabSami88 well, the only noise in our recording room was from the PC. I'm not sure of what kinds of noise levels you are talking about, but I guess you'll be fine if you don't keep your windows open 24/7 :D
Also, our recording room sounded like shit, so that's one of the reasons we used SM57. Because it's cardiod polar pattern, it picked up only a little amount of the room sound and mostly my dry vocal sound.

hmmm, i hate to ask so many questions, but i figured why not as you'll most likely know ;p I want to be able to record my guitar without a mic, so if i get guitar rig will it simply hook up to the comp then i can record it through cubase or w/e or do i have the wrong idea? :X thanks!
I'm looking for a mic for recording - Mainly vocals. But intend to use it for recording guitars & percussion too :/ would you recommend this mic? it sounds like the best from which i have compared it to. awesome stuff btw \m/ thanks :)
@jaklol09 Yes, SM57 is awesome for guitars and snare. There's professionals who own like billions of dollars worth of gear, and still use SM57. It does a pretty good job on vocals too, if you use a pop-filter. So make sure you have one, if you are going to use this mic for vocals. Otherwise you'll get horrible pops whenever the vocalist sings the letter "p".
@HeilTheOperator thanks! No mics were used for guitars :D We recorded guitars through instrument-input on my firewire interface and modelled them with freeware amp simulator plugins.
man i watch this video more then a few times i love the music!! im also debating on getting a SM57-LC , i already own a audio technica at4040 but still want to try that mic out!
@D40Oz1 Thanks for the feedback! You can never have enough SM57's :D It's the industry standard as a multi-purpose mic. Even though you wouldn't like it on vocals, you would definately use it for micing amps, snare etc. at some point.
@PyschoMechanix40 check out my "Nerve End - Mixing Session HD" -video. There's all effects I used on vocal tracks. Mostly Blockfish compressor and Waves L1. Also, almost all of the vocal lines are doubletracked and that's also making them sound fuller.
@hobazzz Yes it should. If an interface is atleast somewhat decent, it shouldn't affect the sound that much.
Yes, some interfaces have better preamps and ad-converters, but... there are plenty of other factors affecting the final result that are much more significant: right mic distance, right amount of gain, using the right compressor and having good room acoustics.
Get those things right, and I'm sure your SM57 will sound good!
@willytai Thanks! I plugged the mic diretly to my Mackie Onyx Satellite firewire interface. It has pretty good preamps compared to most of interfaces in it's price range.
Searched for SM57 videos because I'm thinking about getting one and a Line6 UX as an interface. Your band is actually pretty awesome, I'll check your music out later.
I've saw countless videos showing clean vocals into an SM57. My question is this... Is an SM57 good for recording aggressive death metal vocals? If so what steps should be taken to ensure a good recording?
@vandomVenom I wouldn't use 57 for live vocals, since it's extremely sensitive to lisp without a pop-filter. SM58 on the other hand has built in pop-filter which makes it much usable for live vocals.
@Edgreek the first song is called This State Of War and the second is Amnesia. You can download both of them at our Myspace-site. There's a link in the description box.
@D40Oz1 that's right. I'd probably prefer a SM7b, but don't have the money for it at the moment. I've heard that at least Björk and Bono have used SM57 in the studio, so I guess it's not the worst choise of mic for vocals!
lol that's the exact same way i record my vocals.. with a external pop screen and a sm57 .. people think i'm crazy..sm 57 just shines on some voices where no condenser can touch it.. and i hate how foam windscreams muddy the sound. nice to see someone else use the same setup :P
great!
