people who are hatin on this movie, you have a very simple solution...don't see the movie. personally i think downey jr will do good, esspecially since he is a recovering addict. the holmes books actually contained quite alot of action, some of which was only implied because watson himself didnt see it. and lets face it, while jeremy brett did a great job as holmes it wasn't a particularlly exciting movie, and its damn near impossible to relate to him

Well the books only cover Irene for a grand total of about 20 pages, and like KoYHan said; little was changed but much was exagerated. I dont see why the movie has to be exactly like the books to be good, i mean hell, the books were amazing but not so amazing that i wanna watch them verbatum on screen. I think you ought to explore this new rendition before passing judgement.

I think I've already watched enough rendition of movies made by Hollywood to know how they turn a beautiful book into an uninteresting movie.

PS. I am not expecting it to be exactly like the book. The only thing I want is for the makers of the film to give justice to every character and the whole book itself.

That's Hollywood. Take a classic and totally screw it up. Well, they did get at least ONE thing right: Holmes was a cocaine user, like the guy playing him.

Why not get a Brit to play him though? Downey's accent is so obviously fake. There are plenty who'd do better - Hugh Laurie, Rupert Everett, Daniel Day-Lewis.

Guy Ritchie should have made a Sherlock movie. This would probably be a good movie if they'd renamed the characters. Ah, crap.

Rupert Everett is my favourite ever Sherlock! They did a made for tv film with him as Sherlock holmes on ITV (UK.) It was amazing.

im sorry to be a bit of a wet blanket here but, what is it with these film directors and changing world famous characters to make them more "Bad Ass"? from what ive gathered (never read the books just saw him occasionally on the telly) Sherlock Holmes never was the type of guy to get into bare fists fights...or even have a a bit of grissle on his face

Sherlock Holmes was a very good boxer. If I remember he had a few titles. They didn't change much, just exaggerated a lot.

As a big fan of the original novels by sir Arthur Conan Doyle, I feel alienated at this movie trailer's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes... Robert Downey Jr. is just not at all like the original Holmes... at least not from what I've seen here.. uhmm... diifferent Sherlock Holmes... definitely not the one I've come to know & love. It just feels like a sell-out" movie... but I would like to give it a chance... even if it makes me feel bad.

It is because Holmes was never like this. It looks stupid. I am a fan of the Basil Rathbone, holmes. This looks like a Van Helsing holmes. It looks stupid.

From my limited knowledge of Sherlock, Basil did not portray Sherlock correctly. For one, in the books, he was a morphine addict.

He wasn't exactly an "addict". He used the drug to relax, during that time in the setting of the novel the drug he took was not really considered a harmful drug, it was something like an over the counter drug used for remedies. But all the same, he was never addicted to it, at least not the way drug addicts are. Sherlock Holmes was eccentric that way.
