On this date in 1958 {Feb. 24th} "Tequila" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; on March 17th it peaked at #1 {for 5 weeks} and spent 19 weeks in the Top 100...
Ranked 8th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 50 Singles of 1958 chart...
Other charted versions; Eddie Platt {#20 in 1958}, Bill Black's Combo {#91 in 1964}, and as "Tequila Twist" by The Champs themselves, {#99 in 1962}...
The American band No Way Jose reached #47 in 1985 on the U.K. singles chart
my grandpa actually had a band in bakersfield, ca. called jolly jody and the godaddy's, they competed against the champs in a band play off and won. I do still enjoy listening to this song. point of interest, listen to the arlen roth, danny gatton version, pretty cool.
Fantastic. First time I've seen Chuck Rio. I played in a band in 1965. All instrumentals. Our sax player had an alto and we played this song. I was 15 and played a Harmony Les Paul copy that I got for Xmas in '64 from Sears' catalogue for $99. I play this tune on my tenor sax but can't sound like Chuck. Thanks for posting this.
I'm glad that I can watch this video of my Mom and Daddy and remember my Dad at one of his last guest appearances and feel the way that I felt the day that I was there with them..:) He was a very talented and wise man that was a blessing to have in my life. He gave my mom and I a great life and they shared such a wonderful bond of love and friendship together, that was a once in a lifetime REAL TRUE love. Daddy I miss you and love you...Thanks for giving me such great memories...
My father, "Robert Bob Rule played drums with Danny years ago in Los Angeles. They played at our house many times, and as a matter of fact tequila was written in a matter of minutes. The original song, or the song that was supposed to be the hit was called "The train to nowhere" It is indeed a shame that full credit was granted to Danny for this song, my father loved playing the drums. And doesn't everyone love the song "Tequila"
I put this video in a playlist I carefully made of official music videos (or the best and oldest original live performance available on YouTube when no music video was available) for all 47 songs (except Sugarhill Gang's 1981 hit Apache [Jump On It]... can't find that one... can you?) from the YouTube sensations, The Evolution of Dance and its sequel. The Evolution of Dance is apparently the THIRD most popular video of all time on YouTube! See my channel if interested :)
Much to my surprise I see with joy in this rare video the great sax player Chuck Rio on stage in the one of the latest years of his life (unfortunately he dead in September 2006). He was the first saxman of the legendary Champs, then replaced in the middle of 1958 by Jimmy Seals, who appears in the unique video of The Champs on the web, playng "Too much Tequila". I ask someone who have other videos or picture of the original Champs or Chuck Rio to publish them. Fans will be grateful of that.
@anconanord I have other pictures and memorabilia, Chuck Rio (also Danny Flores) is my brother in law. We were thankful to have him as a part of our family for nearly 40 years. Not only a great musician but a great man. He taught me many things. The most important thing he ever gave or taught was his incredible faith in the Lord.
@ZMAN311 Sorry about the volume. I pulled this from an old VHS tape that we had taped from one of his TV appearances. The tape had degraded and the sound quality is poor but thanks to modern technology (and YouTube) it's now digital and won't get any worse.

Wow. Seriously, wow. I never knew how good Tequila could sound ...
Thanks Chuck Rio and The Champs and kdmunsell for posting this :)
And now I know why our jazz band instructor (who also plays sax) despairs of ever being as good as Chuck Rio!

I may sound weird for asking this but is the sax player the guy from home alone?
