  • This song is beautiful I lost a friend a month back life will and can never be the same as before listenin to this song, I haven't felt anything since but I understand the pain that went into this song, I love ya brotha, R.i.p big guy I miss ya

  • The older guy with the beard crying at at 3 mins 50 secs is Jack Dublin Earle - Steve's Dad.

  • There is not many times you will see so many grown men cry over someone in their lives. Anyone who can claim that, after their death, is someone truly loved. We love you Townes.

  • You make me feel at home and I'm from boston but when I get to fw they call me the dumb yank and I love it cuz the kid I go to see is 30 years older and wants to go arrroow head hunting I go down and say hey u fished for a living take me fishing and he says nope I did it my whole life u can take my boat but I'm not fishing

  • Stunning.

  • I Cn Hear Townes in his songwritting Earle is probally one of my favorite artist EVER and I loved his Latest Album " I'LL NEVER GET OUT OF THIS WORLD ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • you can tell before he started playing this song, he was gonna be fighting tears, he couldnt even get it started, "brain damage" was just an excuse. yo can tell it hurt him. A true artist in every right.

  • @Elkins2424 Think it was damage of another organ about a foot and a half south of the brain.

  • Crying

  • Fantastic.

  • Very few people can pull of a song about Van Zandt as beautiful as this. Townes has a grooviness rating of 11 out of 10... So was his alcoholism rating unfortunately... A significant amount of the time, you don't create music as beautiful as Van Zandt's unless you're tortured inside. Sad but true.

  • Whoah! Aint that Jack Earle (Steve's dad) at 3:50?!

  • @BluesBurner

Yes - Justin is there also, as is David Olney.

  • @nilradem Thats cool, ive never seen Jack in any of these live vids. Its awesome how supportive Steves parents were for him and i like the fat that his dad is there watching Steve.

  • @BluesBurner

I agree - they seem like great people, from what I have read. And Steve looks a lot like his dad now.

  • My name is Ivan Yoder. I live in Yelm. I got outta prison 3 years ago. An I'mma butt pirate!

  • good lord. i'm gonna go stare at the wall for the next 5 hours.

  • Thanks for posting love this song. Steve earle is so good!!! Missing Forth Worth.

  • who the guy between earl and phelps?

  • @Glorytotheone

Eric Taylor - good singer-songwriter and Nanci Griffith's ex.

  • @darlincommitme

You can hear him this same night by searching for "Prison Movie" here on Youtube, with his name.

  • he fucked up at the start and then he just sounded frustrated for the rest of the song

  • This is Steve's finest song. Guitar work, and entire feel of the song is so much an homage to Townes. Thanks for posting. BTW, I'm from Fort Worth, and "my bad" is not an apology.

  • @brucethehack what about Billy Austin? It's more awesome.

  • I love the version when he's on stage with JT, Nancy, And Guy. But the emotion in this one, damn, it's like watching Townes having a hard time getting through Tecumseh Valley (Townes was the first singer/songwriter ever saw whose own song moved him to tears while performing them) God Bless all the Original Texas song Pirates, I miss Steve's Black guitars with the Jolly Roger on them. And God, watch out for Townes and Skinny Dennis, there's a lot of us here waiting to see them.

  • What a great song, so moving

  • in my humble opinion the best song Steve Earle has ever written, and he did a lot of great songs, and this specific performance is his best rendition of that masterpiece I listened to so far. Magical, breathtaking, sad beyond saying, moving, even after listening to it a hundred times or more.

  • he can forget the lines day and night or whatever, it's his song and no one can do it like Steve...incredible.....i just wish i'd seen him do it the 3 times i saw him on the Townes tour....great...

  • This could almost be a letter left at Mr. john Townes Van Zandt's grave. He sings it as if it is so personal. He does this song on stage during a tribute to townes. Nanci Griffith sits beside him while he sings and she is seen weeping throughout. Wish I could get ahold of the full video as I'm quite ignorant of who else paid tribute that night on that stage....

  • @steele917 From left to right in the Video you're talking about (starting with the ones I can recognize) are John Townes JR (AKA JT), Nancy, Steve, and Guy Clark)

  • Instead of a like button, this tune wants me to click the LOVE button.

  • how do you not spell Fort Worth correctly. But thanks for the post.

  • Oops I never noticed it was Fort Worth, I thought it was a town called Fortworth, my bad^^

  • @bonecracker23 it's okay, shug, it's the town that has Dallas on the other side, ha! always loved Fort Worth, went to school in Denton, TX, and spent lots of time in Fort Worth, great city, incredible folks....

  • who gives a fuck about the spelling that dude is like a chick!

  • I like Steve Earle period. Good song.

  • @bigdaddytalltexan you are right, my friend, he is the beest and i've been a fan for 20 years, born and raised native Texan, too...have been in MN for 23 yrs, but never quit wantin' to come home..

  • Magnificent performance. Hard to keep a dry eye on this one.

  • ..stunning!

  • A masterpiece.

  • Beautiful Steve Earle song

    Rocket

  • Wow, Guy Clark recorded this on his CD too, you gotta' be some kind of bada** if Guy Clark is cuttin' your songs. He's awesome and so's Steve E.!

  • This is amazing! The best ever. We sure need heroes like Townes and Steve and Justin these days

  • I just can´t wait for saturday night to see Steve, one of my heroes, playing the song´s of my biggest hero, Mr. TVZ.

Oh and I have to travel from Lisbon to Barcelona fo that...

  • Even if you don't know Townes, Steve or Justin you should still get a tear in your eye when you watch this. Only a heartless person who doesn't appreciate music for what it is would not see the sadness Steve is fighting when he sings this song. No problem with tears here. Let It Rain Steve!

  • @karrieamettis

half of the world doesen't care for music, I mean look at the braindead people hopping up and down on the computer-created crap that they call music.... "The world" lost it's knowledge and "ear" for music... well big part of the world.

  • justin and steve's daddy are both in this video, his daddy died earlier this year....

  • This is the kind of song that makes a grown man cry. A masterpiece from Earle. It leaves me breathless.

  • i've seen this precious man twice on his Townes tour, bless his heart and bless Townes.....

  • I had a typo in my reply to a comment about where this was recorded... I meant Steve's son (not song) Justin Townes Earle who is carrying on the tradition of great soulful singer songwriters. I miss Townes and love Steve Earle and really appreciate this video being here. Thanks again.

  • Dude, it's cause the song is about their friend who died. The kid crying and rocking back and forth near the end is his son. Chill out.

  • Sorry. Folk blues, not rock.

  • That just happens to be Eric Taylor. Thank you Lord, for letting some people still have emotions and aren't afraid to show 'em Love you, Eric!

  • Saw this performed tonight, solo + acoustic, in Knoxville. Utter frickin' brilliance.

  • Goosebumps. Thanks, Steve.

  • .............. speechless...... beautiful live version of a beautiful tune! Thank you for posting

  • So where was this recorded...having seen Townes more than once in Houston, not to mention catching a tribute here...can only say that words will heal, just wish someone found a source for healing for Townes!!!

  • Don't swear by me, but I think it is the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.

  • It was recorded at the Bluebird Cafe here in Nashville. God Bless Steve and Townes and thanks for posting this. We've lost many great writers but life goes on and Steves song Justin Townes Earle is a great soul keeping the tradition alive.

  • bonecracker, thanks for posting this video, i had not seen it before....incredible song from the man who has been my favorite for over 20 years....God bless!!

  • superb find princess, thanks.

sent you a mail, but it looks like it didnt send grrr

but there is airmail on its way. earle goodies galore =)

  • I think David Olney is there 3:32, but who is that crying at the end 5:10? He looks familiar,.

Jack and Justin Townes Earle are there too.

  • i love Steve Earle...i will just say it out loud here...he's the best thing to EVER happen to music of any sort....God Bless Steve Earle and RIP Townes...

  • RIP Townes.

  • Wow... you could cut a knife through the emotion in the crowd. What a great, respectful, audience for such a beautiful performance. When I saw Steve at Massey Hall in Toronto a couple of years ago, it was like that. You could've heard a feather fall on the carpet. And you could hear the sniffling, coughing, blowing noses...

  • Wonderfull.

  • yep, you are right, bless Steve's heart, i'm sure it was broken when Townes died...now, I can't wait for this new album, May 12...and then maybe another tour!!!

  • thx princess. "up above the great divide, where the sky is wide and the clouds are few!" My dad travleed lots in his days, this song reminds me of that, in fact he was from Amsterdam mentioned here. My Mom heard this and confirmed that they were in every place mentioned in this song. even though it was really meant for Townes!

  • I have not heard all of the other performnces from this sesion at the Blue Bird, was sort of mezmerized by Kelly Joe. This is a wonderful, soulful performance...Thanks for posting.

  • I've been a rabid SE fan since '88. Seen him quite a few times. I'm beginning to think that this might be one of the greatest songs ever written.

  • great!

  • Nice. Artists perform live. Performers lip sink.

  • yeah, Steve Earle is The Artist...

  • wow.. thanks for posting.. reckon there were a few tears shed through that song.. touching..

  • You're welcome my friend^^, I thought about posting this vid when I watched the Townes Van Zandt video you send me, a very powerful and moving song.

As you probably noticed, it's a kind of "tribute" to Townes Van Zandt, kelly joe played slide on some of his records and Townes was one of Steve Earle's favorite songwriters.

I guess it was an incredible musical experience to be at the bluebird cafe that night^^

  • @bonecracker23 baby, you need to go to Fort Worth for a visit, a great, great city...

  • bonecracker23 - Thanks for another great upload!
