It's a great idea, but we will need to reach a point where it's economical to use all-electric vehicle technology without requiring tax breaks to consumers and huge government subsidies to private companies in order to offset the higher costs.
There was an article in newScientist recently describing advances in battery technology by IBM's Zurich research labs and Battery 500 (USA manufacturers) which promise to increase battery capacity 1000 times, thus reducing bulk and increasing distances to petrol engine range.
Not on the market yet, however soon it may come to be everywhere, phone charge that last a week etc.
