I'm Asian myself and you're right. All of my Asian friends from America or not like pop music, or bad modern gangster rap, and whatever is trendy like dubstep. They all listen to music to look cool or fit in. It disgusts me.
I like real heavy metal, real punk, the blues, jazz, orchestra/soundtrack, reggae, rock n roll, reggae, underground hip hop, experiemental, and funk myself.
Also THERE ARE good Asian bands out there. Check out Boris, Tengger Calvary, and Sigh. Japan has a huge rock scene.

Most of the time, those good music makers are not popular enough to spread their music overseas
