I am just getting interested in Hammock camping, and I have to say it seems kind of silly to have a tarp to begin with that barely covers the hammock itself for any conditions. If you had any sort of rain you would be wet. Why not get a larger tarp that properly covers the hammock?
@madogblue You'd be surprised at the protection a hammock gets from a small tarp. Reports are that the very small tarp that ship with Hennessey hammocks keep the hammock dry, unless the rain is wind-blown from the open end direction. When folks opt for larger tarps, it is both to to reduce the uncertainty in coverage, and to provide space to sit under as well in a down-pour.
Interesting, looks very versatile, but what would be the advantage to using it if you're expecting cold/windy/wet weather when you can get tarp with doors? (ex. Price? Weight?)
I think it's a matter of getting the best weight/bulk combination out of a set of gear for a given set of circumstances. There are disadvantages to always carrying a single tarp that is suitable for the worst weather you expect. With a smaller tarp and optional beak, you can leave the beak at home when its not needed. I agree though that if I have a full-up winter tarp and am heading out into winter weather, it makes sense to bring the tarp that is built for it.
