This is all great advice, but you seem to be advocating that artists pretend that the music industry is the same as it was twelve years ago. Do you really think it is wise to pretend nothing has changed in that time? I don't know why any new artist would pretend that it is a good idea to get wrapped up in a conventional label if they have any real success to capitalize on. Major labels no longer have the luxury of pretending to know what is good enough for the people.

If a band/ artist must already be making it in order to get signed, then what role do record companies play now? Why should I try and get signed if I am already filling 2,000 capacity venues? Why not just go independent and sell my music through an outlet like Bandcamp? What value is there in getting on with a record company like Island?
