  • My friend, part your last statement pretty much sums up what is wrong & contradictory with your logic and affirmative action, "...people will pick who they favor, instead of who's best for the job". Example, affirmative action allows favors for the less qualified students for college, and worse, it is race based, not economic, that why even a White or Asian kid who had overcame a rough life will be out-of-favor when compete against a Black or Hispanic kid, with same or even better childhood

  • Affirmative action weakens society. Most employers are fair when it comes to hiring, but affirmative action allows less qualified candidates to receive a job unfairly. Affirmative action claims to fight discrimination and advance racial equality, but all its really doing is discriminating against white males who are often times the most qualified for the job. Do you want people to respect you when you get a job, or assume that you just got 'hooked up' because you're a women or a minority?

  • The main reason I am against affirmative action as opposed to using absolutely nothing but discrimination based on relevant abilities for college admissions is because universities serve more than their students. If we weight quota deficiencies over merit, the sum of the abilities of people attending universities falls. Also, do you think a situation where black students accepted into a university have less aptitude than their non-black counterparts is ideal, or that it enforces stereotypes?

  • Not every illegal immigrant is Hispanic or for that matter Mexican. I don't see why you take such offense to the speak of affirmative action. If you understood what it was you would be able to realize how it impacts more than just black people as I've said in the video.   • Would you run your business on a race quota? I work with 8 blacks, 3 mexicans and 1 white. The blacks tend to not get much done and try to pass on the work to the mexicans and the white guy. They brag about how little they do. I don't think this is the way most blacks work but I do find it apalling in how many blacks back the lazy ones and don't recognize a bad apple when they see one. When I was a boss I fired people who didn't want to work regardless of them being mexican or not.

  • I understand the necessity of AA, however, I also believe it is the obligation of every person who benefits from it to work their asses off to the point that it is no longer necessary.

    It is a yoke around the necks of people who "benefit" from it. I've worked with some truly great black engineers, and I'm a pretty good scientist myself, but we will forever be "marked" any time we make an error as a "product of affirmative action" that reduces the overall quality, just like Sotomayor.

It showed white women specifically....not women in general, I'm not sure if there are more white women in America than the entire population of black Americans, I doubt it seriously. One could draw from several reasons as to why. The most obvious seems to be our fraternal institutions.

  • Well it isn't terribly difficult to figure out. Women are around 50% of the white population, and blacks are about 14% of the population as a whole, whereas whites are 74% of the entire population.

    Obviously, there are many more white females than there are blacks; this explains why white females have benefited more. I don't want to sound condescending, but you need to research statements further before posting them as fact.

  • Not all females work? Not all blacks work either so what exactly is your point? It is difficult to hold a discussion when you are unable to reason. Let's say ALL of the blacks work and only HALF of the females work (ridiculous) but even then there are at least 10 million more females!! What exactly do you need explained?   • Lets think about what you just said. Go back to 1884. Think about that monumental moment in history and what it has to do with Africa. Think about present day Africa and how it has been colonized by Europe. Then lets talk about slavery in Africa today. It's much bigger than you realize. And YES the majority of blacks in Europe and Canada descended from slaves. I can bet you plenty money. Slavery existed in Europe too, not as monstrous as America though.

  • Heres one for you to think about, the local police station in my area made affirmative action in their station (It was to hire more women not black or hispanic people becuase theres very little if any racism in my area). Because the station hired women, the phisical standards had to be droped for police because women could not meet them. That means weaker police protecting you. Just somthing to think about. I do agree with many of the things you say but how there done i have some disagreements.

  • Even as an Asian, I support affirmative action for the reasons you said. But you have to admit that it's unfair. I had to get much higher grades to get in my college. Also there was only 1 black in my engineering class. If more had taken a harder but better major, they would be more qualified for better jobs and move up in society. All majors are the same tuition. So it's not just the fault of white racism. Yes, that's one factor, but not everything. But I agree that AA is still necessary.

  • What I said is my opinion based on my experiences and what I've heard from others. Has nothing to do with a union I could care less about. It's not about the amount of kids you have. It's about you being in a certain "skin" so to speak and not being able to seek employment when you are qualified. I think the picture that's painted is a super-qualified person being denied employment because they aren't a minority. That is NOT always the case.

They've done several documentaries of people going into workplaces and holding interviews and being treated differently not based on what they've done or how they dress, but WHO THEY ARE.   • Bush isnt a criminal, He had a DUI 30 years ago, which is a misdemeanor. He paid a fine and had his license revoked for a little while. Different characteristical traits apply with the presidency. He was in the 21 percentile during his freshman year at Yale. He HAS AN ARREST RECORD. Bush was a C student. Read your local copy of The New Yorker.  He has said it himself! That is not rumor. That is fact. So if you need more evidence than that, it's simply about what you choose not to believe.

  • Affirmative action doesn't diminish this. We have hard studies and research that tells us. When left to hire candidates to fill positions, the people at the top don't want Tyrone from the west side or Jose from the south. They prefer a candidate who looks like them and comes from a familiar area, regardless of how they do a job. Also if minorities are hired, they have less chances of advancing. And about arrest records, do you know how many blacks/hispanics are arrested w/ no conviction?

  • It's not about better skilled or smarter, it's about people who play by the rules and aren't seeing the advantages. It's about rectifying the economic situation set in place by people who don't pick the best man for the job, sometimes they just picked the white man for the job. If people acted accordingly and picked the best people, affirmative action wouldn't be a topic. Since you have 90%+ of administrators, ceos, deans as white men....this tells you something.

  • You make the work force and society in general less competitive, dumber and more lazy, when you higher less qualified,less educated, dumb, lazy peolpe. skin color and gender aside. It's basically survival of the fittest, that underlying competitive atmosphere that subliminally galvanizes peolpe to strive harder, study harder and work harder becomes diminished with affirmitive action. Simply because an employer has to meet a quota. It's unfair and it waters down the work force.

  • Hire* is the spelling. First, there is a difference between unqualified people being hired and qualified people from different backgrounds being hired. There are plenty of people who got jobs based on who they knew, still to this day this problem exists. They disenfranchise others who are studied and don't have the same opportunities based on their economic situation. BUSINESSES ARE FRATERNAL they hire people based on what school they went to not what they know. Look at Bush 43

  • yea charlie totally disagree, If PERSON A goes to school studies hard graduates valedictorian gets a degree and strives hard, he or she should be considered for employment accordingly, regardless of skin color or gender. If PERSON B goes to school, jerks around, does not strive hard, does not study,gets a criminal record, obtains minimal gpa requirements because they are lazy, than this person should be considered for employment accordingly, regardless of skin color or gender.

  • An Ivy League underachiever who lived off of daddy's success to become president. The only reason he got into the school was because of his father. Meanwhile the people at the heads of these institutions hire who they feel comfortable with not based on their qualifications. There is direct racism, sexism, genderism and religious discrimination that CAN NOT be corrected on its own. It happens every day. Hence the Lilly Ledbetter Act just signed into play.
