It takes many more units of plant crops to produce one unit of meat. Grazing cattle is a big contributor to loss of topsoil. Tropical rainforest is cut down for meat production. A balanced vegetarian diet is usually healthier. A vegetarian diet costs less money.

My view is that no scripture is literal in any book of any religion. The wisdom is in the subtle information, and remains hidden to those who cannot see it.

Certainly not competitive body builders, but that's irrelevant. But my point was more about sustainability and the spiritual reasons they find vegitarianism compelling. It takes many more units of plant crops to produce one unit of meat. Grazing cattle is a big contributor to loss of topsoil. Tropical rainforest is cut down for meat production. A balanced vegetarian diet is usually healthier. A vegetarian diet costs less money.
Your arguments work against your position. I don't think you think much.

Buddha and Christ lived 2500 and 2000 years ago respectively. Humanity has advanced much, gained deeper insights into nature since then. For instance, Christ never condoned slavery. Finally Gandhi was a political figure and a freedom fighter, not a rationalist or a scientist.
Discard their beliefs does not imply one is "smarter" than them.
There is little to be gained by "embracing the symbolic", whatever that means.
