  • My dad was with the Regina Rifles at the time they went through Emmerich and Zutphen on the way through Deventer and Zwolle. Always looking for connections or photos of the journey.

  • My wifes grandparents live in Zutphen and somewhere in all that rubble is they street they now live on. Wow, cant even recognise it. Thank you to all who fought and liberated Europe. My own granddad was a member of the Danish resistance.. but as a Dane who wasnt born in those dark times its hard to imagine, but thank you all. Thank you for posting this and reminding us just how good we have it, regardless of financial worries and celebrity stupididty, nothing is as bad now, as it was then.

  • My dearest thanks to the liberators of our region "the Canadians"

In the Spring this year i had a roofing job in ZUTPHEN in the center-town.,

It had to be a renovated by using the old rooftiles, the owner had sorted out them.

As i wached the sorted out heap, i notest a whole lot of them had like 8 mm holes in them( from the outside, the backside had a outbreak hole like 3cm in dia.m.

and now i wached this old film i see the origional house,at 3:35 left at the end of the street ,with dutch flag

  • I live in Zutphen and it's funny to see how little things have changed around here. Most of the footage seems to be have been made at the Deventerweg. At the spot where you see the Canadians crossing the stream is now a bridge called "Canadezenbrug" (Canadian's Bridge). Many streets here have also been named after Canadian soldiers and some Canadian veterans still visit Zutphen during the national memorial day, where they are guests of honour at the ceremony.

  • @fsz1981 My grandpa was a runner with the North Shore Regiment, and he helped liberate Zutphen. He used to run supplies across the river you are talking about for the other guys because he was the youngest (17) and the smallest (about 1.5 metres tall). Also the quickest :). Glad to see the Dutch appreciate us liberating you. Unlike SOMEONE we know *cough cough France*.

  • @Litterboxer529 Cool, is your grandpa still alive? If so, he can contact the organisation "Welcome Again Veterans" (can't place links here but a Google search will bring up their website); they have a Zutphen department and I'm sure they'd love to invite him and his family over for next month's memorial. As for France; I think it's a beautiful country. Just too bad that it's teeming with French people. ;-)

  • @fsz1981 Yeah, he's actually in that organisation! He went on a tour with me and my 2 brothers a few years ago, and we went through places like St. Aubin, Carpiquet, and then into Germany, where his father was born. France IS a beautiful country, but I think that Holland is a lot nicer because of the people. In Canada we have the Tulip Festival, which is celebrating Canada liberating Holland and our relationship to oneanother.
