  • is that a 57 on the hihat? say whaaattt??

  • He uses camo drum wrap to make himself blend in so another drummer doesnt shoot him of being jealous.

  • Anyone know what beaters hes using? such a great artist!

  • The thing about what is being played, aside it being extraordinary, is it allows for space between notes -to stretch or move things around within the time... (of the song)

  • Wow such an amazing piece of music!

What beaters is he using anyone know?

  • @kentsmedblom I can tell you what beater I am using while watching this if you want ;) Oh matron...

  • Can't say I like the music a lot, nor can I say it's bad. It' just not for me. Almost too quiet!

  • @ThomasMetal75 Anyone should respect your opinion, man... I love metal, too (judging by your name) -this is pretty cool though

  • i would be very impressed if gavin wrote this whole piece himself...

  • And this is why subtlety and feeling beat speed and technicality any day.

  • @kitthehacker feeling + subtlety = technicality.

technicality is the most import thing, and it consists of ALL of the aspects of drumming, including "feel" and such. speed is not the most important, i agree.

  • Is the first second of thsi video the beginning of " The glass prison" from Dream Theater.

    Gavin grooves!

  • @MrMardil its actually the beginning to as i am haha

  • @rastlin57 Yes I had already noticed this.

Maybe also the End of Six Degress :D

  • Sweet. Very dynamic and tells a story

  • Damn if my ride sounded like I'd play the shit out of it, too.

  • Please somebody tell me exactly what's the name of this music style??? This must be something like a jazz-rock or rock-jazz... This is AWESOME!!! This is even able to kick all kinds the metal (except PT of course) out of my head!!!

  • @OopsAaaah Genre's are meaningless. There are two kinds of music. You like it or you don't.

  • @OopsAaaah Fusion

  • This video left me smiling like a simpleton. I genuinely think Gavin is the best drummer in the world. I don't even know how to describe how good he is, he just knows exactly what to play and when to play it... Simply amazing.

By the way, does anyone know what that china is?

  • @Jacobiskoby37 There is a 19" or 20" Zildjian Z Custom China and second Oriental Thrash China 14"

  • snaregasm

  • Jesus. Look at the accuracy marks on his toms...

  • Beautiful and very calming!

  • Seriously, this is perfect drumming!

  • It's like listening to the weather channel..but..better.

  • 4 people wish they didnt play guitar

  • who is Mike Portnoy?

  • 420 likes...yessss...

  • if i could ever marry a song it would be this one.....Beautiful

  • my god when they started doing those polyrhythms at 2:15 it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

  • I report this as porn =P

  • I love this sound! :D

And i listen Hardcore Punk as Exploited and One Way System...

    From Italy W Gavin Harrison!!!

  • I am a heavy metal fan, but this is AWESOME!!!!!!

  • Amazing drum sound, those toms sing so nicely

  • Comment removed

  • Who said drummers can't be musicians!

  • @skitignallebjorn The most of the drummers hit the drums. Gavin Harrison PLAYS drums, that's different.

  • @skitignallebjorn i don't think anybody has ever said "drummers can't be musicians." mainly because drummers are musicians.

  • in all honesty not impressed with the marimba playing. but i still bow down D:

  • I hear Dream Theater in the first 3 seconds of this.

  • Comment removed

  • Can someone tell me what ride he is using?

  • @oBIGxREDo Zildjian K 20"

  • Battle of the Century:Tommy Igoe v.s. Gavin Harrison

  • I wasn't expecting to hear dream theater at the beginning haha. Awesome vid.

  • @eKuL1995 yeah dude I heard that too! haha

  • This made me cry :')

  • Everything is just going amazing when all of a sudden... TRUMPETS! Unfortunately no one is going to get this reference : (

  • @AEStheist TRUMPETS..... BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  • 1212123 1212123 12123 = 7 7 5.. thats how he explained to count... works for me :P accent the 1 in the count ..

  • I am amazed every time I hear and/or watch this man on drums.

  • VEry Tasteful

  • very nice drumming!! Garvin keep on playing this way. All the best for your projects. CU

  • the guys who disliked this were probably like "wtf this guy has one bass pedal...? he sucks" what tards.

  • Shit, did he make that himself? If so, i really liked it and he should get a singer and start a band…so long as he doesn’t leave porcupine tree.

  • very very minimalist. Love it!

  • nice harmony with the toms starting off there ...amazing

  • This is actually insane.

  • where is beat one???? :S

  • @BdonYoo 19/8 : 7, 7, 5. try to count

  • @TheThim51 eZ buddy i wuz kidding we all know where beat 1 is ;)

  • @BdonYoo oh sorry dude xD yeah spotting sarcasm on the internet is hard some times haha.

  • @TheThim51 don worry about, thats why youtube sucks.. everything gets misinterpreted haha

  • @BdonYoo that's true man:P

  • Please tell me this isn't all one guy playing everything....so I don't kill myself.

  • coolest elevator music ever!!! lol no disrespect this is fantastic

  • I find this very easy to masturbate to.

  • Gavin disliked this once, he thinks it could've been more musically.

  • @SimonVicFirth youre kidding me?

  • @SimonVicFirth LOL best comment EVAR!

  • WHAT THE FUCK ARE THOSE METAL THINGS WITH THE HAMMERS?!

  • @Deraek They are »Gamelan instruments. Percussive instruments from Indonesia ( Bali, Java ). That one is from a group called the Saron and the one he is using is called Peking.

  • Is it just me or does his kit sound fuckin awesome in every aspect of his playing? I'll never get over the sound of his kit! or his skill =D

  • I was just saying the time signature because people that comes here and can't really know what time signatures these are because they,re stuck to pop... and they really think he can't hold a beat, but it's their small brains trying to focus on the old 4/4.

  • 4,3,4,3,5... is the time signature, but you can even say 7,7,5... or 14,5... or 19... or plenty of ways, but the feeling is 7,6,5... or 4,3,4,3,5.

  • @ilikeredandblack Gavin counts it in 7 7 5... well, for me, the only part you really need to count is at 3:11 - 3:43, bacause you cant really hear the melody of the Gamelan instruments anymore.

  • @DonQuerres you can't say how he counts it... or you can't even say if he counts it... because he's so use to it... its like if your playing 4/4 on drums, you don't have to count, because your use to it, no matter if you count it double time, half time, 3 3 2... its all the same at the end, so 7 7 5, 19, 14 5, anything... it doesn't matter, time signatures is really made to be easier to read (to right it down on paper)... so bassicaly its just to put it more "simple"...

  • @DonQuerres /watch?v=2gWTTrwx-fs&feature=related He counts it in 7 7 5

  • Please someone tell me that Puma model !!!

  • I had to go to the bathroom but i just couldn't leave!!

  • this is fucking magic, that not all people understands

  • @sweetfly66 noob, it's never about the genre. skills, he's got em' don't hate. what ever genre you "like" just means that's only style you can understand. grow up.

  • I watch this video everyday.

  • His kit set-up looks so damn comfy!

  • Such a beautiful kit with beautiful cymbals

  • My God, that snare!!!!

    THAT SNAREEEE

  • anyone have the link to the playalong that's mentioned in the description? cant find it on their site!

  • trying to learn the bass to this song... some parts make me swear :P

  • I love the sound and desire his SnareDrum!!!

  • 2:15 lol

  • This is so beautiful

  • what hi hats does he use here?

  • I second unclesaboin's comment. When the drums are not being smashed to within an inch of their breaking point, they really are rather nice to listen to, especially when they are played by one of the best out there.

  • An excellent display of sensitive and nuanced playing...I remember seeing a ~19 year old Gavin when he was playing with Renaissance (back around '82 or '83)...

  • dont worry ladies and gentlemen, that was just a blind man attempting to like the video!

  • if you could tap pure inspiration, it would come striaght from this mans mind.

  • The fills at 5:01-5:06 might not be his most technical but man does he ever make them sound sexy. Not that the whole 6 minutes and 59 seconds isn't amazing or anything. :) and those triplet flam fills.. oh my <3

  • i bet 1million of any chosen currency that the dislike is a Joey Jordison fan!

  • @Jamonga100 Good luck trying to find anybody willing to take that bet!

  • @Jamonga100 maybe it was someone with shaking hands after trying to play and also trying to like this song, but due the vibrations he clicked on dislike.

  • @Jamonga100 or Travis Barker

  • @Jamonga100 Yes, and the other one is a Travis Barker fan... :)

  • @Jamonga100 i bet 1 million of that same currency that i can't watch a video without some thumbs up chasing prick making a reference to joey, beiber or gaga. be interesting or be quiet!

  • Wow.......is all i can say.Love your dynamics and control...just wow!

  • the federer of drumming

  • proud to have seen him playing a couple of times with the great PT!

  • never heard of him 'til today....he's definitely add to my list of favs.......this is so cool...i love xylophones...and guitars, and pianos, and basses, and drums, and violins, and wind instruments...all instruments really....i just love music...and this reminds me of that.

  • It sounds like a Dave Matthews band song. Dose any one esle agree with this?

  • those triplets are magical

  • Does a playalong-version exist of this song?

  • @DonQuerres

Yes! The Rhythmic Horizons DVD contains both with and without click! :-)

  • Anyone know how he tunes his drums?

  • @SpiritHardDrive with a drum key...sorry man, couldn't help myself : )

  • @naedsukram Grrr, ya bastad =D

  • @SpiritHardDrive with magic

  • Gavin is one of the most prominent drummers of today. He really has skill. Complimented with a massive amount of innovation. He's unstoppable.

  • I love his triplet flams! He nails them so sweetly. It's my favorite rudiment that he uses. Gavin, you're god my man!

  • this sounds like YANNI...!

  • I love it !:):):)

  • what tv show does this music appear on?

  • @PoSscar This is from Gavin's DVD Rhythmic Horizons

  • Sim City music 100 times better

  • I love the feel of 19/8... he makes it seem so natural

  • Gavn s one of the best drummers alive today!, m not into the music here but the drumming is flawless. He jumps from different time signatures as easy as im typing this.....

  • watching gavin play is so mesmerizing, he has such incredible feel

  • this track and the lighting is so depressing

but gavin makes it all better

  • such smooth drumming! you wouldn't think it's in 19/8 just by listening

  • Is this on any album?

  • obviously great drumming but this music is AWFUL ..... i hate smooth jazz

  • @sweetfly66

Just becasue you hate it doesn't mean it's awful music.

  • @gitarmats ... true , but how else does one describe music they dislike ?

  • @sweetfly66

You could always say "I don't like this." .

    ...

    I thought that was obvious..

  • @sweetfly66

Good going, dude. You're making an ass of yourself. Have fun.

  • @sweetfly66

Another gay justing bieber fan.. Jees what a fag..

  • @zolonovich .... gay ? .... fag ? ..... because I dont like this drummer and his music ? ..... so what part of the southern united states are you from , and when do you plan on coming out of the closet

  • @sweetfly66 dude i don't like smooth jazz either. but so what?? just enjoy the music and shut the hell up!

when gavin plays it it becomes awesome jazz

  • does anybody knows what snare is that?????

  • i want his kit, so so sexy !

  • the quality of gavin's recordings are always amazing too.

  • Does any one know if theres an actual album with gavins compositions such as this on it?

  • @JoeHeiderGuitar yeah, its called " Drop ", its an album he made with 05ric

  • @superb0 also another one with 05ric called circles

  • what can i say that prolly hasnt already ben said gavin is a true drummers drummer articulate very dynamic and crazy creative his playing can be considered a little over the top but thats just part of why he is so good easily one of my favorite drummers of all time he constantly inspires me 2 keep playing and trying new ideas

  • This sounds like Sim City music!!! cept WAAAY better drumming

  • i've never thought about putting what i learn on the xylophone onto my kit... hmmm.... if i become how a drummer that gavin is then i'll be one of the best of my time

  • awesome. I'd love to see a jazz performance where he team up with Flea and V. Wooten having a bass duel, while Trey Anastasio and Bela Fleck just do whatever the fuck they want right next to them....I hate my dreams

  • simply the best.

  • Brilliant piece of music, an amazing drumming performance

  • This is fantastic stuff. There are few drummers I can think of who play such dense, odd meter stuff and make it sound so effortless and natural as Gavin does. He's such a classy musician.

  • i would give my left nut to be able to play like him....hell ill give em both

  • gavin is a true master of drums. he plays so clean and tight. great artist!

  • pure class. the sound is just teased out of the kit and cymbals and to play like that over 19/8 is astounding. most of the child like comments from drummers on youtube couldnt play with that level of skill in 4/4/.

  • Download link anybody?

  • @MeinlFanatic

try the Hudson Music website - you can download the whole DVD from there.

  • this is truely amazing, not only on the drum front but on all fronts. that horn line is amazing, and the piano part is sexyyy. this is a truely awesome and masterful piece of music. this is why gavin is my favorite drummer for sure

  • I could listen to this all day :)

  • this is pure genius and just plain incredible, at the same time

  • WHAT A GROOVE and change of pace/tempo/key? in the middle of the video

  • yey porn music in 19/8 :D:D:D:D just kidding its brilliant

  • @Kantich porn music is not usually major lol. but nice try I guess.

  • Gavin is one of a kind. Even my brother who plays guitar and rarely even listens to drummers thought Gavin was awesome when we watched Porcupine Tree's "Arriving Somewhere..." dvd. That says a lot too since he listens to Tool, Rush, Between The Buried and Me, etc. Just imagine what Gavin will be like when he's in his 70's lol.

  • @Drunkwraith So sick, all those band with danny, neil and blake richardson, your brother has good taste mate

  • @ExEurasian Those are actually some of my favorite bands (BTBAM especially) lol. He's more into the weird european prog metal from bands like Opeth, Katatonia, Amon Amarth, etc.

  • @Drunkwraith aha oh then you have a good taste mate (Y)

  • the start of the whole video sounds like the start of as i am by dream theater :)

  • because of this video, my mind shifted dimentions

  • Absolutely beautiful - musically as well as visually !

  • @1Boodyman1

that's because it IS the start of As I Am.

  • WHAT CYMBALS DOES HE USE?!?!?!?! I'm a little desperate. 'xD

  • @BertRunars Only Zildjian ;)

  • @BertRunars Zildjian K Customs Z Customs and FX
